- Christine S4 contributionsHobart Must SeeAmazing views - but pack a jumper! We visited in late September with an 8 month old. We drove up and stopped at the Freight Cafe just as they opened for a coffee before heading up the top. Even at this time of year part of the road up was closed due to ice so definitely something for those interstate or overseas to keep in mind! By the time we had finished our coffees both roads up were open. The road is fairly windy and narrow so definitely take it carefully. We reached the top at around 9:10am and there were plenty of car spots available. We climbed the trig station and saw snow! Or ice? Definitely 10 degrees cooler than Hobart with wind to contend with too. We visited the shelter and the lookout. Definitely a must see if you're in Hobart. On the way down we stopped again near the cafe to go to the toilet, have a picnic lunch and do a few of the short walks that left from there. The walk around the old gardens is very flat and accessible with a pram. But the walk to the old hotel was certainly a steep one.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 October 2023
- vargasgirl1984Brisbane, Australia168 contributionsView and flurries of snow! It’s freezing up there but well worth it for the view and the flurry of snow we got! The shelter they have made there is very warm and great to have a break from the cold. The road up and down was scary for me - was happy my partner is from New Zealand and used to those kinds of mountainous roads and could drive us up and down.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 October 2023
- Wellington L2 contributionsGreat Views - very cold but worth it since it's FreeDrive up/down can be disconcerting especially if you in an unfamiliar car or bigger car than you are used to. Had a Hire Car Ford Ranger so Winding roads, pretty narrow on many parts and suggest you do not drive after dusk. Hint - look at weather map for the mountain as it may show temperature is much lower than off the mountain - and the wind will drop the temperature further. Spectacular viewsVisited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 January 2024
- Jeanine M5 contributionsMount WellingGreat views on a good day and worth taking the time to hike along one of the trails from the top and escape the busy peak area. The bad part of the visit is parking on a busy day. Do not be afraid to drive to the end of the parking as there are lots of empty spots.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 January 2024
- Rochelle FRandolph, New Jersey1,140 contributionsAmazing panoramic views on a clear dayThe panoramic view on a clear day is utterly beautiful! Temperature does drop at the top, so best to wear layers and a head covering as it can be quite windy. Well worth the twisty, narrow road drive. This is definitely a must doVisited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 February 2024
- Christine C2 contributionsMt Wellingtonmy husband and I visited Mt Wellington in a day tour. What a spectacular sight from up there, the view is beautiful. Beware to take warm clothes as they say the temperature is always a lot colder up there and the day we went was very much on the windy side so we definitely felt it. The rock formations that have been pushed up out of the ground are really something to see. Worth a lookVisited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 February 2024
- Keith LVillecomtal-sur-Arros, France73 contributionsGreat for a short visit.A wonderful and safe drive to the top of Mount Wellington, and down again. A beautiful road, excellent scenery, sufficient parking at the top, but very few parking bays on the way up / down. Some short but good paths around the top, and wonderful viewpoints. But it can be very windy at the top.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 March 2024
- Schlepper1939Brisbane Region, Australia887 contributionsA must see attraction on a fine dayIt’s been many years since I have visited this attraction - too long. When we visited it was fine but with clouds scudding across, so the views came and went but this added to the ambiance. Bitterly cold, even in March and the wind was fierce. Despite this, it was still breathtaking. Highly recommended.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 March 2024

Given that Tasmania is already quite cool, and Mt Wellington is at least 10 degrees cooler, it was 8 degrees on the mountain when we went in the middle of summer. Even the wallabies had a fluffier looking coat. And apparently the echidnas have a fluffy layer under their spikes up here too to keep warm. Sadly it was a foggy/overcast day and it looked like we drove into clouds so there wasn't much to see in terms of views. However, it was still pretty cool (no pun intended) to walk around, and on the way down you can stop by the side of the road and see some views of the city. There's also a toilet up the top and an enclosed look out where you can take shelter if it is too cold and windy outside.

On a cold, wet & very windy day we were driven to the top of Mount Wellington. Good job as apart from the freezing cold & driving rain the gusts of wind were approaching gale force it seemed. Once in the observatory all is forgiven. Allowed to dry out & warm up, the views are incredible. There is a telescope provided which helps. As a free attraction I would strongly recommend it.

Take the 448 bus from Davey Street to the Fern Inn stop - Approximately 10 km ($5.00). The track starts across the road and is well sign-posted. The first major stop is the Silver Fern Falls which is approximately 1km along the track. From there you climb past the the Lost Freight Cafe on the Pinnacle path to the summit. I am a reasonably fast walker and this took about 2 hours. Some sections are steep and may require poles but on the whole I think its a moderate to hard climb. There are several options on route to take paths to other sides of the mountain to look at different features. Each path is labelled with difficulty and a time. PLEASE NOTE: The conditions do change quickly. We hiked in Feb and the change in temperature and conditions was quite dramatic. On the summit there are a number of observation posts and a road leading down from the car park if you want a more leisurely decent.

We were looking forward to the views from the top and enjoyed the drive up, stopping once or twice to look at the city below. Unfortunately, before we were able to reach the summit the weather closed in and the view was lost in a cold, damp cloud. Try to go when the sun shines.

The summit of Mount Wellington looks nearer than it actually is but the twenty to thirty-minute drive is well worth it. You can drive your own car to the summit, or you can get a local bus. Some hotels take shuttle buses up there and of course, other tour operators take tours to the summit also. You may also decide to park halfway up and walk the rest of the way but I would only advise this if you are an experienced walker and are prepared for such an adventure.
The road is windy in places and care should be taken driving up the summit road, especially if it has been raining or snowing. At the summit, there is plenty of parking and it's worth taking warmer clothing as it is considerably cooler up there whatever the season.
There is an indoor viewing platform with several interesting stories displayed of people who have ascended Mount Wellington on foot. The best viewing platforms, however, are outside and there are several of these, accessible by steps and ramps. The views are spectacular unless of course there is low cloud, and while you may set off on a beautiful sunny clear day, there is always the chance of a lonely cloud drifting by to spoil the view! The views are easily some of the best I have seen taking in the sea, coves and bays, the city of Hobart and mountain ranges all around. I have only ever been to the top of Mount Wellington in the day time but you can go up there at night time too and I guess the view would be amazing in a completely different way.

The golden rule for Mt Wellington is that it will be 10 degrees colder than Hobart city, but then allow for the wind chill factor. It is 1.2kms high and there is plenty of wind. Takes about 30 minutes by car to the top and gives a great view, but rarely a great photo.

We went to kunanyi (Mt Wellington) during our trip to Hobart with Red Decker. We were very fortunate in that it was great weather and our driver, Christian, was fabulous. Christian was very informative and we even stopped part of the way up for a quick 10 minute detour to view Hobart. You get 30 minutes at the top which is enough time to have a look around. Be warned it is very cool at the top even on a mid September sunny day! Overall well worth it. $65 per adult gets you the trip plus 48 hours to use the hop on hop off bus around Hobart.

The view at the top worth a million. Must visit if you're in Hobart. Don't worry if you don't drive, they have a dedicated bus which departs from the city to the summit (check their schedule though as it's not very frequent).
The day we went was raining. Could imagine if it's a clear day, the view would be a lot better. But it was very worth the visit already.
If you like hiking, try the Zig Zag track on a nice day. Apparently better view on the track.

We were here for the walks and views. Tasmania is often rainy and foggy in the mornings (sometimes all day) so we didn't get much view getting dropped off at the top ha! But it cleared throughout the day. We did part of the pinnacle track with the zig zag track, and cut across to the organ pipes track. We then followed some of the shorter trails at the bottom which were also lovely (some of the fire track trails). We spent 9-3 here and didn't run out of things to do. Nice little popup cafe near the start of the Sphinx trail

Wow, wow and WOW. A must do when in Wellington.
We woke up to seeing a sprinkling of snow on the top of the mountain and couldn't wait to get up to it. We had breakfast and headed off in the car to see it. On the way at 9am, we found out the road was closed due to snow and ice and would be checked at 11am to see if it would be open. Luckily, it was open at 11am. the drive is windy but not scary. There was still plenty of snow on the side of the road and in the bushes. We stopped on the way up to play in the snow which was fun. When up the top, the wind was howling, the temp was 1 degree Celsius but felt like minus 5 degree Celsius due to the wind. The pinnacle look out observatory was a welcome break from the wind. The views all round were amazing. We were lucky enough to have a quick snow storm come through which was thoroughly enjoyable and very cold but we loved it. This is a must see when in Hobart, you really enjoy it. There are few parking areas / look outs on the easy 20 minute drive up and a café up at "The Springs". You can also get a tour bus up from the city if you don't have a car.

Planning to visit mount Wellington at night for stargazing this July. As we are not driving will it be difficult for us to get an uber to and fro mount Wellington

Not sure how you will go with Uber up to Mt Wellington but I believe they close the road to the top if there is snow or other dangerous conditions

Hi, can i check whether it is dangerous to drive a 12 seater up and down mount wellington?. Thank you
Written 27 March 2022
There is a really good road going all the way to the summit with a huge carpark at the peak. Visibility on certain days will be your only issue. I can't see an issue.

What’s the drive up to the top of Mount Wellington like? Is it a safe easy drive?
Written 3 January 2021
You can drive, catch a bus or walk. The drive for the passenger's is stunning. The driver needs to concentrate as a couple of hairpin bends but from the bottom about a 20min drive. You can stop half way, park and walk to some amazing rock formations and views. Have been up in winter, very cold, need a down jacket, gloves, beanie etc. Even in summer usually cool and a breeze. Look from Hobart and if clear go for it. If cloudly wait until it clears.

If my flights leaves at 1pm, will I have time to see Mount Wellington (no car).

I would think not unless you could get a morning tour.

Why are people leaving negative reviews of the Mountain for naturally occurring weather and hight issues? Can someone explain to me how these people can be so stupid and self important enough to complain about visibility due to clouds or fog? Someone even complained about the "sheer drop to one side of the road"???
Written 8 June 2019
I totally agree with you in that people shouldn't put a review out there when they haven't had a true experience of that place because of natural circumstances affecting their point of view. I was lucky enough to see the view and mountain on a clear day. I was told by my friends (who live there) that if it isn't a clear day you shouldn't attempt to go up there because the road will be blocked in certain places (depending on how good or bad the weather is). This is for everyone's safety. In general, I find some people will whinge about anything just because that is who they are. In my opinion, it is a beautiful part of the world regardless of whether you do or don't get to see it in it's full beauty.

Hello all!
We are looking to visit Mount Wellington to see some snow! What would be the best time To go? We were thinking mid August but want to make sure it will be cold and snowy! We traveled to New York and Canada Christmas 2018 to have a white christmas and were very upset that it did not snow at all! So definitely don't want to make sure we can try plan a snow trip! Thanks in advance 😁😁
