About
Mona was designed to be approached from the water, with visitors landing and climbing a long stair, in the manner of the ancient Greeks ascending to their temples. We have two schmick fast catamarans running every day the museum is open, direct from the Hobart waterfront to our watery doorstep. As well as being fast, they’re fun, full of bars and snacks, and friendlier to the environment than cars. Some pretty speccy views on the way, too. Go all-out: treat yourself to the Posh Pit.

- clint672016Surfers Paradise, Australia22 contributionsA great way to do it.We took the ferry to Mona. It’s a very good way to travel. The upgrade to the Posh Pit is well worth the additional cost, for the experience alone. Very funky and out there decor which sets the scene for the day. You get a few drinks in and some snacks, but ultimately, it’s just good fun. Great staff and very efficient operation all up. If you are in Hobart, it’s worth heading to Mona, the art isn’t for everyone but the whole set up, architecture and overall vibe is definitely worth seeing.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 March 2024
- jbushman2017Nipomo, California523 contributionsTransport to Museum of Old and New Art (MONA)The ferry/boat leaves from the main pier in Hobart, the reason you ride the boat is to go back and forth from Hobart to the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) that resides 25 minutes up the river in a Hobart suburb. The MONA reviews are not found in the Hobart section so please look it up. The museum is the primary thing one should plan on seeing if they are in Hobart for a day as it is World Class and unlike any high-end museum in the world in its choice of collections.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 March 2024

- Scott M1 contributionA fun way to kickstart your Mona tripHad a fun return trip in the Mona Posh Pit. A little bit of decadence each way set the mood of our trip. We had exceptional service staff, Andre and Izzy, two friendly, fun people who went above and beyond to make our experience memorable. Loved their enthusiasm and made everyones day that bit brighter. Highly recommended!Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 10 June 2024
- Petra G1 contributionPosh Pit so accommodating and enjoyable.Posh Pit was absolutely worth it. We were a group of 4 and as friends completely enjoyed the experience. We had fantastic assistance both ways from Izzy, Ollie and Daniel. Izzy in particular very helpful with dietary requirements of 2 of our members of a group of 4. Very friendly and very sociable sharing our humour. We were very impressed and this both started and finished the Mona experience on a high.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 17 June 2024
- Melanie RBrisbane, Australia4 contributionsPosh Pit adds to MONA experienceThe Posh Pit was an excellent choice. Priority boarding, attentive staff and catered amazingly to coeliac and onion/garlic issues. Izzy was exceptional with our food options and Ollie and Daniel kept the glasses full. Thanks for a great beginning and end to a wonderful MONA visit.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 17 June 2024
- Paul TArmstrong Creek, Australia140 contributionsGreat way to get to Mona. Most certainly a different way to get to Mona! We decided on the Posh Pit experience which was a good way to take the ferry trip. The Posh Pit has 4 fake furred alcoves all with a window and cushions, while the rest of 'the pit' is basically tables and chairs but in no way detracts from the experience. We had an alcove on both trips which I think is the way to go if you're lucky enough to get one. Drinks and canapes are included in the price, savory on the way there and sweet on return. All the food was delicious and made better washed down with a glass or 2 of sparkling wine. Trip takes about 20 minutes, enough time to take in the passing scenery. Staff were friendly and made sure our glasses were never empty.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 September 2024

The Mona Ferry has two ticket prices - Posh and regular. Posh travellers set in the front of the vessel (away from the noise) and other passengers sit at the rear. Boy, is it noisy. There is a commentary as the boat travels but with the engine noise it is not a good mix. Nevertheless, the trip down the Derwent is interesting and the trip to Mona is about 20-30 mins.

This is a smooth ride to the MONA museum with friendly crew and good views. Skip the “posh pit” experience the $30 extra per person is not worth the money. The free wine is of poor quality and no surprise as it comes from the winery of the owner of the boat and museum. Just another opportunity to take advantage of the tourist, just like the museum

The ferry trip was fun, but I didn’t like the way the Posh pit was advertised. To state that it gets you away from the riff raff is a bit nasty. I know they are trying to be funny, and Mona-like, but the simple fact is, some people just can’t afford it. And this kind of thing just creates an unequal society and people think I this judgement is acceptable. It is not.
For the record, I could afford it, but I would not like to be seen as someone who looks down on others because I am financially successful.
An equal society just makes the world a better place.

The ferry trip to/from was nice. Be warned that you must climb 99 stairs from the ferry to reach the museum. The artwork was way too extreme for my taste. A few pieces were interesting, the rest were in my opinion just weird. The museum is quite large, and many of the rooms were empty or had few pieces in it. I do not regret going, but would not do it again.

The mona ferry is an excellent way of getting out to the museum. It’s reasonably priced and ensures you can have a few drinks while out there without needing to drive and worrying about being over the limit. The staff are friendly, the wines are delicious and there is a variety of seating options both inside and out. I wouldn’t recommend getting the posh pit as the trip is quite quick and you wouldn’t get your moneys worth out of the food and drink in the time given.
I went out there in January this year with friends as part of my bachelorette day and this was a great part of the day.

Forget standard ferries with rows of identical seating, noisy engines, boring commentary, that simply get you from A to B. Imaginations ran wild when they produced these ferries. Lots of different searing types including sitting on sheep or tigers. Incredible choices for coffee, food, or a fully stocked bar, amusing commentary, comfortable, quiet, sleek.... and now I'm running out of superlatives.
This is all about the journey which you will remember.

This is a bit of a whacky trip. You can perch on a tiger or a sheep on the top deck depending which ferry you get or hang out in the posh area and get all inclusive drinks.
Besides it’s fun nature the ferry is well run and very frequent running down to the Mona meueum which is even whackier.
The VIP package seems to be a waste of time as you aren’t on the ferry for long. It would only suit the look at me type.
The crew are very helpful and you can get a drink from the bar to enjoy a drink as you travel down the river.

I have nothing but praise for this company. The ferry crossing was swift, pleasant and on time. However, we were travelling with a 6 year old who was terrified the boat would go too fast. The girl at the entry point reassured her and offered her a visit to the bridge. She even came and fetched her during the crossing and took her to meet the captain who was so good with her, chatted for about 5 minutes and showed her the bridge. Even let her steer! Brilliant service and thoughtful care resulted in one very happy six year old!

I love a good ferry ride and the Mona Ferry is no different. The scenery is the same whether you take the Posh Pit option or not & even if you don't, there is a bar that you can purchase from regardless. Staff are friendly & helpful. Be aware that there are 99 steps when you arrive at MONA and although they are not what I'd call steep stairs they are not disability friendly. There is however a bus that goes from the same spot at the dock or you can drive yourself to MONA if that is the case!

Took the ferry with friends to visit Mona Museum. Short trip, we paid extra for the “posh pit”, had 2 beers and some finger food before arrival. Moving relax to enjoy this weird museum.

I cannot do the stairs. Do I stay on the ferry to another drop off point?
Written 9 January 2023
Are the steps easy steps ie. handrail and flat (not cobbly)?
Written 12 September 2021
Yes .. many steps, not that steep and handrails. But I recall there is an option where the boat can stop and there is a lift or alike for people who can’t do the strains. I would check first but pretty sure that exists.

Hi,
How do we go about finding times and booking tickets?
Written 21 November 2018
We looked on the internet, but the day before we went we actually walked around the water so we knew where to catch the ferry and then we saw a sign for purchasing the tickets. So the next day we just went straight to the ferry got tickets and all was good. You do get locked into a leaving time but you can change it. We actually changed our minds twice and changed the tickets twice it was no problem
