This dugout church is a surprise with the beautiful carvings both on the altar and on balcony. When it was built years ago by volunteer Serbian miners they did not have modern sighting equipment yet the dugout ceiling is straight and true. An extraordinary accomplishment.

This is an amazing underground church in Coober Pedy. The attention to detail in the dug out building is beautiful to see.

You know that special smell of wax candles that you only get in Orthodox Churches? Well, it has it.If you don't know what i am talking about, just go! It is good enough for me, together with the fact that it is fascinating: it is an underground church! Whether you are religious or not, buy a candle and lit it.

A must see when in Coober Pedy. Generally not one to chase down churches while on holidays but THIS place blew me away. Such a gorgeous, peaceful place with a beautiful history.

The church was very cool and quiet. Interesting to see how the rooms were dug out. The religious carvings were beautiful

The church is a bit out of the way but worth the drive. Quite large for a under ground church. Very interesting.

A must see. Someone posted it was locked, it was not. The door sticks. All doors unlocked 24/7/365. Worth $5.00.

A word of warning: despite all the signs saying it's open 24 hours, we arrived at 8:30am on a Tuesday and it was locked. A very large sign requests that you make a donation of $5 per person before entering- make sure you check the door is open before you do! Very disappointing to make the trip (a couple of... More
