Being the off season not much happening so self guided tour. No one working so you wander around with a map, glow torches. You marvel at how it would have been once. It did give you an idea of what it would be like underground...More
We only did self guided tour which allowed full access through the working mine. The are also options for full guided tours which offer more use of machinery. You get you hard hat, UV torch and a map with explanations on the walk as to...More
Too many mine experiences are just props to get you to buy souvenirs but this one is the real deal. To actually work a section of the mine where opals are currently being found was very exciting and you can understand how people get hooked...More

We are sorry to hear you were disappointed and didn't get a tour that day.
Unfortunately the tour guide had a family emergency and had to leave.
Sorry for any inconvinece this may have caused.
Hands down one of my favourite tours ever; and I’ve travelled the globe!
Informative, fun, exciting and you walk away with a deeper understanding and appreciation for what is OPAL!
Miss it and you will regret it!
It is a little bit old fashioned ... old DVD-players with old monitors, tourist-trappy, strange and the "working" is missing a little bit. Also the noddle-area is just a dirt hill. So do it but do not aspect something special.

If our driving - go to Bathurst, Dubbo, Broken Hill and across to Port Augusta before heading north on the Sturt Highway which is approximately 2100 kms and a long long drive. Lots to see if you have the time to stop and look around, camping along the way.
Not sure about flights from Sydney to Coober Pedy. There are some from Adelaide for about $250.00 each way - you can find them on Webjet, tripadvisor and last minute.
Alternately you could fly to Adelaide and drive from there up through Port Augusta
