Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

This is where I bought my opals to bring back to the folks in the US. Some of the stones are from their mine and some are from other mines in the area.

I found out that I had a friend connection to the owner! (friends from Adelaide)....

The owner and staff were super nice. It is located on the backside of the Big Wench (great place to eat and view the area).

This is an excellent self-tour of a 1916 opal mine and underground homes, one built in 1916 and another in the 1960s. The hidden mine was accidentally discovered when the house was being extended. Highly recommend

Well worth a visit.
Gives an excellent idea of what they went through to dig up opal and the gamble of not knowing until the last minute whether it’s valuable or not.

It was well thought out with a lot of information. Who would’ve guessed that mad max was screened on such an old projector.

There was the typical shop at the end but the opal was beautiful and the staff were content to talk about it.

If you like opal you’ll be spoilt for choice.

This was an excellent visit. We took the self guided tour and walked through the underground mine before looking through the underground house, the museum and finally the shop.

Good intro to undergtound opal mining and living.
Well layed out with informative stops. Hard hats are worn on this self guided tour and these are cleaned after each use.

Even if you don't like enclosed spaces this is well lit and feels airy so give it a look see.

From the moment you step out of your vehicle you're made to feel welcome - I was greeted by four other visitors - that welcome continues from the minute you walk in the door.

Nicko Farantouris - owner and resident - makes you feel like he's been awaiting your arrival.

The self-guided tour is nothing short of incredible - there is so much to see, stretching back for millions of years and representing present day Coober Pedy living.

The Museum Shop will have any Opal lover tossing up the options for what to take home, as well as enticing the souvenir-loving traveler to add to their collection.

Do not miss it!

Quaint insight into how mining must have been at the beginning of the 20th century. Well worth a look.
