The Dunstan Playhouse is one of the performance spaces within the Adelaide Festival Centre, which is the pre-eminent performance complex in the city.
The venue is close to celebrating its 50th anniversary, and to be frank, it’s looking a little tired. That isn’t helped by the plethora of construction activity in the vicinity, which has impinged on the normal access to the access to the venue.
Once inside, it’s still an excellent performance space, and I enjoyed the recent staging of “Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf?” by the South Australian State Theatre Company.
If you’re visiting Adelaide, and you are interested in live performances, I suggest you have a look at what’s on here.

I attended the ballet Swan Lake which was just wonderful but was spoilt by experienced we had at the Festival Theatre. First it is now quite difficult to get to the theatre from the railway station, you have to walk right around fhe outside without cover and I thought the renovations were going to an improvement! It’s terrible. We arrived early to have a something to eat at the cafe restaurant before the show as we’d seen on the website. We were ignored by two staff when waiting for a table who left us standing with out saying a word. One finally came back to us and told us snacks were at the bar. (website confusing) we ordered our drinks and baguettes only to find when we sat down we’d been short changed with out drinks. Just really disappointing. So little attention to detail, poor service and being ignored are all areas I’d like to see our pre eminent venue make some substantial improvements on.

Pre show dinner (Mary Poppins) at The Star Kitchen and Bar - beautiful location and views across to Adelaide Oval.
The porterhouse steak cooked to perfection - the added flavours made this without any doubt the best steak I have ever eaten. Superb!!
My wife’s Linguini puttanesca was also enjoyed - but looking more like spaghetti was used.
A request for another two bread rolls and a spoon for the wife was met with “very busy at the moment …” (restaurant approx. 60% full). Staff member never returned to our table. Slight hitch in what was otherwise a great evening!

Went to see Frozen which was very enjoyable but the evening was spoilt with having to wait over 30 minutes to exit the car park the parking station has been built to hold big volume of cars but obviously not enough exits and the flow of traffic with large events needs to be managed better. Do not park here unless you are prepared for the wait. They have lost me

Came to the festival theater to see Billy Elliott and the venue was great. The rows of seats were long so that if you were seated in a middle seat, you had to go a long way thru a sea of legs/bodies. The theater itself was beautiful and acoustics were ok but the best part was what was in their lobbies...interesting and varied art work. Would make a trip just to see the art.

Hairspray the musical was great. Then……. We lined up for 30 mins to get a lift down to the car park. The centre has apparently had a renovation. Well what idiot put only 1 lift in to accomodate all of those people trying to get out. The pay machine was like learning to drive an airplane . Then we finally got to the car and had to wait another 20 mins to get out of the carpark due to the enormous line . All of those dollars spent and they didn’t even replace the old seats in the theatre or the terrible carpet. Still Taps on the sinks in the bathrooms. Where’s the hover taps to stop the spread of germs. What a screw

I went to a show at the Asian Festival: "Made in China 2". It was thought provoking. I loved it. The Festival Centre is still doing renovations. The car parking was too confusing so I had to walk a long way instead, which was difficult.

This theatre has the most uncomfortable seats if you sit longer than an hour. Do not buy tickets in the dress circle, too far away. Parking is an absolute nightmare. I will never go back. The renovations were an entire waste of the government's money, some new carpet is the only difference. Same dated interior. I would rather fly to Melbourne or Sydney to see a show.

Has anyone seen Matilda the musical on the restricted view seats - What could you not see? Was it good enough? I would love to take my children but the price as a single mum is unaffordable for us sadly but I thought I could struggle to make their dreams come true for the $55 seats so really like some honest reviews if it is worth it or not as it's still a lot of money to us
Thank you kindly

Can someone please tell me if row C in Stalls at Adelaide Festival Centre is too close to the stage for the best view? This is to see the Sound of Music. I dont want to have to tilt my head upwards to see the stage. From row C would I be seeing directly onto the stage?
