This review is to tell people to come prepared with your own food as the offering here is appalling. Overpriced crap is the kindest description. A chicken burger which said it came with slaw, bacon and cheese with chips was $26 and it was half a Turkish roll with a burnt tiny piece of chicken which I think was a frozen tenderloin or something and some melted cheese. There was no attempt at all to provide a half decent serving of food when taking $26 dollars from you.
The island is still tired. And seems a bit dirty. They need to clean and use the blower and grate the beach and keep it looking like it is the paradise it should be. Water is lovely and snorkelling is nice but it needs more for the cost to get out there and what they want to charge people.

Green Island is an integral part of the total north Queensland and Great Barrier Reef experience. 45min by ferry from Cairns at a cost of ca 100au$ return, you get to spend up to 7h on the island and explore a rich and varied marine and tropical life. With various activities on offer from snorkeling, diving, swimming, and boat trips to explore the nearby reef shelves. On the island itself the main attraction is the crocodile farm with the inclusion of the world largest crocodile in captivity, yes you get to meet Cassius at whopping 5.48m long, and a ton in weight, only when you come close to such creatures, you feel the terror seeping through your body. A glass bottom boat trip into the reef is very much recommended, the one we took, where you get a chance to see colorful fish swimming in the shallow reef. All in all its a day we'll spent, and we'll worth the money should you choose to pick this trip. You won't regret it.

This is a good place to get an overview of the barrier reef. it is on the fringes of the reef so do not expect an "authentic" reef experience. I say that it ticks many boxes for a reef type visit for the following reasons: it is close to cairns- you can get to it in 40 minutes by ferry; it is one of the least expensive tours of the reef; it has lovely beaches; it is children friendly; it has walks and a swimming pool; it has passable coral for snorkelling; it has an adequate restaurant. The best place to snorkel here is under the bridge that takes you to and from the landing boats, anywhere else is a disappointment. If I visited again I would choose another tour that takes you to the outer reef. Green island is suitable for those who aren't much into snorkelling (or those who are elderly or travelling with very young children) but want to dabble whilst enjoying all the other amenities of a beach resort. It's a beautiful island but if you want to take a proper look at the GBR I would advise you to take one of those tours that take you to a floating platform in the outer reef, where you can spend all day viewing the reef.

We stayed here in a slow season for 7 nights so the resort was definitely not at capacity. Busy through the day though with day trippers.
This was a place to relax. We swam, read, visited the Crocodile Park, went to the outer reef to snorkel and scuba dive, did the glass bottom boat trip and some rainforest walks.
Something to note is that house guests can come in and out of the Crocodile Park once you’ve paid the entry fee. We visited 3 times to see the show so get in early during your stay for best benefit.
House guests get free use of beach equipment, beach chairs, umbrellas, kayaks etc. Snorkelling off the beach near the jetty is best but limited coral. Plenty of fish and the odd turtle though.
The resort is pretty well maintained. Some things might need refreshing but mostly all good.
The staff were so friendly and competent
Food in the restaurant was amazing. Prices a bit higher but that was to be expected.
We took some snacks with us as the shops have limited choices. Mostly icecream, crisps and a few chocolate bars.
Note -You are not permitted to take an esky or alcohol to the island
Breakfast was included and had all we could want. Other Dining was mostly in the Little Bites for lunch ( hamburgers, steak sandwich, hotdogs etc) and restaurant for dinner other than a couple of nights we had burgers from the bar. The bar is open in the evenings if there are enough house guests. A couple of nights during our stay it was closed.
All in all a good holiday. Probably wouldn’t return as we’d explore another island next time.

Absolutely amazing experience, wonderfull staff and when all the day trippers leave you feel as if you are the only one on the island if you are staying overnight. Prices on the island are a bit high so be smart and bring some food and snacks with you to balance the cost. You can have a nice pizza on the beach for about $25 and guests get 2 free drinks each night at sundown. The bird poo smell isn’t as bad as some are saying so please don’t be put off by negative comments, it’s only one section of the island and there is so much more to enjoy. Definitely worth the effort and please consider staying a couple of nights is a magical place.

Had the best time teaching my girl snorkeling here. Saw a myriad of wildlife and fish coming right up to us, sea cucumbers, rays, pointed nose sharks, turtles and more. Spectacular. Did not enjoy the midges at all or sand fly bites that itched for weeks after or the lack of proper showers but for an experience to remember, brilliant.... the food was extortionate. Over $100 for a basic hot dog and 2 burgers with 3 cans of drink... but the experience.... awesome.. Just take your own food and plenty insect repellent.

Ok so it really is like two islands. Daytime: when day trippers are there is is too crowded. It was like entering a theme park on a crowded day when we arrived. After 4:30: Only hotel guests are in the island and it is great! We loved Emerald’s for dinner. It is not luxury, but it is good value, rooms are spacious and well-appointed, and staff are great. The diving was fantastic. I recommend diving. It’s at the island and the outer reef pontoon—different experiences and both great. Best snorkeling is at end of jetty. Daily fish feeding and happy hour for hotel guests are fun. Overall a great experience.
Also, we did the beach picnic—so great!

It took about an hour and 20 minutes by boat from Cairns (it didn't shake at all!). Half-day tours use a high-speed boat, but it was a FULL DAY tour so we arrived slowly, had a little fun, then lunch on the boat, and then went by glass boat to see the reef and fish. The fish knew full well that they would be fed when the glass boat came, and they were able to see an amazing number of fish. It would have been even more fun if we could snorkel...
As I was no longer young, I gave up and walked around the island. It seemed to be a low tide that day, so I could walk without getting my feet wet.

We were looking for a good snorkeling spot that didn’t take a whole day and Green Island was highly recommended. Getting into the water was nice. Temp was nice. We saw a few fish. Biggest turn off is that the island is run really smelly!! We had fun but next time I’ll look elsewhere.

Second visit to Green Island. A 2 hour stopover on our reef cruise. Such a beautiful little island. Wonderful snorkelling. Weather was rough but it was still clear underwater. Saw a turtle swimming below us and lots of colourful reef fish. Lovely relaxing place to spend a few hours or day.

Is there any way to get a private transfer, to or from the island? The ferry times don’t match with our flights.

Can you bring your own alcohol if staying on green island and are alcoholic drinks expensive to buy on island
Written 13 August 2021
I would bring some alcohol in my luggage as no room service. The prices for bottles of wine are quite good.

Hello
We are going to visit green island and staying at the resort in April ( stinger season inApril?) and planning to do snorkelling with the kids there
I just want to ask if anyone know is there any stinger net there ? Is it safe to snorkel there ? Any box jellyfish or Irukandje there ?
Does any one snorkel there need to wear special protective suit to prevent jellyfish ?
Any idea would be appreciated as it’s first time with the kids there for snorkelling thanks

I was there in December, we did snorkel off of a boat and off the beach. When we did it off the boat, Jellyfish were everywhere, I called it snorkeling with the Jellyfish because we didn't see much fish. After we got back on the island we snorkeled from the beach. Most of the people that were snorkeling from the beach did not have stinger suits on and there are no nets, and we only saw a couple of Jellyfish but we did keep ours on after seeing them everywhere just 1 mile off the beach. I guess most people didn't wear the stinger suits because the Jellyfish there were low level stingers meaning there stings were not painful at all. I got stung on my chin and face where the hood didn't cover. It only hurt for a few minutes, it felt like someone poked me with a needle. The Jellyfish do was up on the beach, we walked around the island on the beach and we had to watch were we stepped because they were on the beach.
Good luck

Is Green Island near outer reef which is suppose to be better for snorkelling
Written 2 November 2017
If you go to Green Island - around the old underwater observatory (beach side) at the jetty you will see 'Nemo'. There is a lot of coral, fish and rays. Green Island also has the largest Crocodile in captivity. Feeding shows are twice daily and the Crocodile farm is worth a visit. We did it all outer-reef, Green and Fitzroy Island all trips were great!

Hi,
I will be doing Travel around the world next year. I am looking for to do Green island on my own. Is it possible just to book a ferry without agency ? All I see , there are all offers of agencies. Thank you so ,ugh for help. Eliza

Hi
The ferry operators have offices at the wharf itself - my experience is that the tour operators often have tickets for longer than the ferry companies, so you may need to go two days in advance or be prepared to go for the higher priced ferry if you want to bookdirect. The price difference was only $6 from $90 ticket so there isn't much to be saved.
