About
Nestled within the Botanic Gardens, Rockhampton Zoo has been at its present site since 1925. While the animal section at that time consisted of monkeys, cassowary, possums, guinea pigs and pea fowl, today you can discover more than 60 species of Australian and exotic animals. Whether it is chimpanzees and cassowaries, dingoes and otters, or crocodiles and koalas, there are an array of fascinating animals to meet and observe in their carefully recreated habitats. Local tip: Time your visit with one of the many daily feeding sessions throughout the Zoo for a more up close and personal experience.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A fantastic experience close to the city. The zoo and gardens are situated next to each other with a cafe in the centre at which to rest between experiences. Both experiences are free. The zoo is well laid out, easy to navigate and full of exhibits such as the newly born chimp. The gardens are also beautifully laid out and off a place to wander around for a couple of hours.

What a lovely little zoo, we visited on the Queensland Labour Day Monday and there were a lot of famiies here which added to the experience. This zoo is free to enter and has a good variety of exhibits. We started with the Meerkats, always a favourite of mine and then moved onto the monkeys who kept all of us amused for quite a while. There were a couple of babies in the enclosure and they were very cute. There are a few Australian Natives including kangaroos, wombats, koalas, dingoes and crocodiles and we believe there is a Cassowary that I really wanted to see but the aviary was closed for maintenance so once again they have alluded me. It is an easy walk around the zoo with plenty of seating if you need to take a break.

One of the highlights of my visit to Rockhampton was the zoo, located adjacent to the Rockhampton Botanical Gardens. It was a delight to discover Meerkats for the first time, new to the zoo, the first enclosure as you enter, their behaviour was interesting to observe. And to see chimpanzees, crocodiles, emus and koalas again. We saw two koalas, both are unable to be released into the wild because of their medical condition, they appeared well looked after, it was so pleasant to see them up close. The zoo is free, provided by the Rockhampton Regional Council, open daily from 8am to 4.30pm. Great for all ages.

Great morning out with the family. 2 adults, a younger one and a teen. All thoroughly enjoyed it. Only took about and hour to see all the animals. They were all easy to see and the zoo is absolutely free. We spent so much time watching the baby monkey, he was so cute. It’s a shame the website said we could pay for feeding the meerkats but we were not able to due to them being in quarantine for 30 days after their return. We would love to return just for this experience. I wish I had photos to share (different device). Do yourself a favour and make the trip, well worth it

What a lovely little zoo in the botanic gardens of Rocky. Not only is there plenty to see but it's free. And when you've finished wandering around the zoo you can check out the surrounding botanic gardens and have a coffee in the cafe. A great day out for parents looking for something to entertain the kids at minimal cost. When we went to the zoo there were a couple of exhibits that were closed for maintenance - the aviary was one of them. As a bird lover I'm looking forward to visiting again when this re-opens.

Good little zoo to take the family for a day out. Displays are good and there are enough animal displays to keep all entertained. I am surprised that there is no entry fee but pleased as this allows families to take children out for a fun day for free.

A free zoo? When does that EVER happen? I thought when I was told about this that surely it was a mistake, but it seems not. The zoo is free. It's not a huge zoo, but it's certainly worth visiting. As it's adjoined to the Botanic Gardens it's an exceptional location to spend a whole day. I was there during school holidays so there were families everywhere! The joy of hearing children trying to talk to the animals is priceless.
This zoo will not take you long to go through ... and you will note that some of the animals are hard to view because of their natural looking environments, but I feel that is why the zoo is worthwhile...they put the animals first and the nosey humans second. :)
If you want to get the best experience pay attention to the sign on the fence that tells you when the keeper talks and animal feeds take place.

What a nice little zoo. The fact that it is Free is a real bonus. I was a little unnerved by all the warning 'Snake' signs everywhere but otherwise I really enjoyed the time we had here. As we arrived late in the day we had just under an hour but found that we could see most of it in that time.
I enjoyed seeing the Koala so close, and surprised it didn't try to escape until my daughter told me it was missing an eye.
I would have liked to have seen the chimps more but they were a bit illusive and stayed in the back while we were there.
It's so worth stopping in to see this lovely little zoo if you are in the area. I highly recommend it.

We were amazed to find this lovely zoo right beside the Rockhampton Botanical Gardens. What was extraordinary was that there was no entrance fee. All the animals looked very well cared for in their spacious surroundings. The bird aviary was huge and housed a large variety of species. We were impressed with the covid19 safe procedures that were operating as we entered the zoo. Our contact details were taken and their was hand sanitiser stations around the zoo. Well done Rockhampton City Council.

There are so many animals to see! Foot paths and viewing areas are planned well, clean, tidy, and accessible for all abilities.
Signing has been updated since we were last here - you can see signs for Keeper Talks and Animal Feeding times.
Cafe is walking distance and attached to the neighbouring Botanical Gardens that are also worth the walk to see.
Animals seem stimulated, in good health and content.
I am delighted that this fantastic facility is free and open to the public - it makes it a great option for families & affordable for everyone. There is the opportunity to make a donation, which I encourage people to do.
You can book paid encounters with many of the animals, which is a great perk.
We love the Zoo and visit as often as possible when we travel to Rockhampton. Highly recommend.
