Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We didn't actually go in the library but on it's grounds there are several large trees that house 8,000 large flying fox bats. It;s wonderful to watch them at dusk as they fly to the rain forest to forage on fruit and pollen. They can be observed all day long hanging in the trees. They are nosey and smelly so some people are trying to get rid of them by getting rid of the trees. There is a movement rot save both.

Having booked a massage in downtown Cairns and finding we had an hour before the massage booking we strolled into the library off the street and were amazed at it’s open spaces and large range of books and seating.

The library at self was a beautiful relief from the Cairns heat and we were excited to see the range of periodicals available including daily papers and magazines which you are free to read. Lounge chairs were readily available we settled in and read our papers and magazines for the hour once finished we return the periodicals and headed for our massage. If you are looking for a lovely place to take time out then I highly recommend this library

We were told by friends to visit the Library at sunset as they had a few months earlier. Wow, there were hundreds of huge bats flying about. Pretty amazing sight! They are all chattering and waking from their sleep and flying about and from tree to tree. And they were huge! Very popular it seems as there were many people there the evening we went to have a look.

It is quite a sight. We were there near dusk and the bats had began to stir. Saw them took off from all over Cairns from the Boardwalk later.

This library is tourist friendly and has wifi and computers if you need to logon
The staff are helpfully if you need to print anything or just need some general information about the regional and it’s affiliation with sister cities around the world

Very helpful staff, lovely areas to sit in a/c comfort and read a magazine. Great range of magazines. If have Australian ID can join and borrow books, DVDs and use library computers and internet.

I'm sure the library is lovely, but do a walk by to see the bats. There's a run of 3 trees full of the giant flying foxes, but walk around the library to the stand alone tree as it's a better view. These things are huge and very active and loud during the days, chirping and hopping around. Unreal to see and then get there around dusk as they take off. Amazing to see. Free and only takes about 15 minutes for each stop by.

The Library Staff were extremely helpful. Computer access and printing services a tad expensive but worth it. Beautiful and impressive building - wish I had had more time to browse the library!

Situated in a lovely old classical building and presenting a rather old-fashioned appearance, the library nevertheless is large and inviting. Take time out of the sun to rest in one of the many seating areas and browse the books or magazines.

This review is for the fruit bats that hang out in the trees just to the northwest of the library. If you have about 15-30 minutes around dusk you should head over there. That's when they wake up and start flying out to forage for food. Even if you can't get to the library, try to make a point to look up at the evening skies around the tourist area. At first you may think you are seeing a bunch of seagulls flying about, but then if you look closely you realize their wings aren't bird wings and those large birds are actually very large bats. Pretty cool.
