Behind the Botanic Gardens is Mount Whitfield Conservation Park, home to the Red and Blue Arrow Trails. These two linked tracks ascend the slopes of Mount Whitfield. The Red Arrow loop trail (1.5Km return) beginning at Collins Avenue, climbs 100m in elevation through rainforest, Eucalypt forest and grasslands to a lookout above the Cairns International Airport offering views over the city and out to Green Island. A short link trail ascends a further 50 metres to another lookout from where the Blue Arrow loop trail (4.5Km return) commences. The Blue Arrow trail takes you through mainly rainforest to an elevation of 300m. About half way around, a short side track will take you to a lookout on the summit of Mt Lumley Hill where you get views along the coast to the north of Cairns.

Very close to the botanical gardens of Cairns. The trail is a 1.5 km round trip incl. some look outs. You basically look over the coastline of Cairns. Good view on the airport. There is an option to extend with some 5 km (blue industry...More

Nice short hike (maybe 10mins?) through lovely rainforest. Views from the top are fab - you can see Green Island!

Nice walk which can be made challenging if you want it to be. No real great views to look at but still a nice walk. Botanical gardens and some nice cafes near by also.

Steep steps and back down on a circular route. Quiet walk, no views really. Wouldn't recommend if you have any joint issues.

Did this one morning and you need a fairly good level of fitness to be able to walk all the steps up to the top before descending back to the start. Well worth it and some lovely views of the city to be had from...More

Fantastic location views and intense run, you forget you are working out. Very safe and the upkeep is such that you arent afraid to fall.

nice walk up the steep mountain but the views weren't too great. It is a good workout for faded tourists. We saw a wallaby on the way down too. Lots of trip hazards to it is hard to gaze out on the forest too much.

The Red Arrow is fabulous free exercise. But if you want to push yourself a little harder, upgrade to the Blue. I love the Blue Arrow. Don't be put off by the official line that it is going to take you hours and hours (or...More

Short walk up a hill by a track and steps. Then back down to the starting point. Quite strenuous if not fit. Very good cardio exercise. The blue arrow which is considerable longer, starts at the summit of the red arrow. Views at the top.
