About
Kuranda Scenic Railway is the original scenic rail journey to Kuranda. This spectacular experience travels over bridges and through tunnels hand-made by North Queensland's pioneers over 100 years ago. - joannep752Melbourne, Australia67 contributionsEnjoyable and historicWe purchased the Gold Class ticket to Kuranda. We needed to meet at Smithfield Terminal and then were transported by bus to Freshwater Station. The bus driver gave us some great information along the short drive. At the Station we were given a refreshing drink before boarding the train and being seated. The morning refreshments were more than sufficient - excellent cheese. The ride on the train was comfortable and we stopped along the way. The views were lovely. The only issue we had was that the seating was awkward. There were two of us and we sat side by side, but another couple sat opposite us. There were no tables in between and the gentleman across me was very tall, which meant he had little leg room, and also they sat backwards for the trip. The layout of the carriages could be more thoughtful, but it was an enjoyable ride with lots of lovely scenery and history.Amazing to hear, thank you for taking the time to review.Written 22 October 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 8 October 2023
- C MeadTownsville, Australia56 contributionsLovely relaxing way to finish off a trip to KurandaWe got the Sky Rail up to Kuranda and the Train back down. It takes two hours and has a stop at Barron Falls with great views. There are toilets on board the train. We were in car 9 in seats 123 which faced backwards, so when you book look for 456 etc. Get out of the carriage and on to the space between the cars, but watch where U stand. Don't want to get squished between the carriages! Doing this gave some great views and made the trip seem quicker. At times the train is travelling at only 20 km/hr and it is a very gradual descent. Thanks for taking the time to provide a review. - Alicia M1 contributionGreat experience! This was an awesome little ride. It was very informative and the views were amazing! We went during a very slow down time so there was plenty of room in our cart but I was very sad that the upgraded cart sold out so quickly as the regular admission doesn't have air conditioning nor drinks. I could see during busy months with hot weather it could be not as pleasant so I would highly recommend the slower seasons!Amazing to hear! Thank you for travelling with us, it is nice to travel in the cooler months, and enjoy the fresh cool air.Written 5 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 November 2023
- Djarmila1978Wuppertal, Germany168 contributionsGreat experience in Gold ClassLast year when I visited Cairns I missed out on the Scenic Railway as it was fully booked so this year I booked way in advance to make sure I would get a seat. Booking was made in Gold Class. I really enjoyed the 15:30 train ride back to Cairns. Seats were really comfortable and as I had a window seat, views were great. The service in Gold Class was immaculate and drinks and food were provided throughout the journey to Freshwater Rail Station. The lady serving was very attentive, fun and informed us on any upcoming views she deemed great. She really was part of the experience so a big thank you to her. As there is more space in Gold Class you could move a bit around to get good pictures no matter what side the (natural) attraction was on. Absolutely loved the experience and would do it again, if ever in Cairns again. Shoutout too to the booking team. I had booked the train for two people but as my partner had some health problems before the trip to Australia, he couldn't join. The team quickly replied to my cancellation email and refunded the seat.Gold Class is a great way to experience the journey. - jellybellymellySingapore, Singapore1,014 contributionsGold ClassWould recommend upgrading to Gold Class for a more comfortable ride with some snacks and drinks. We did the 9.30am ride from Cairns to Kuranda in the morning. Booked tickets prior online directly with Kuranda Rail, and paid on the day of travel. Do book in advance as all the Gold Class seats were taken up. Before stopping at Barron Falls, we were served coffee/tea, a selection of drinks, some cheese and biscuits, a small packet of macadamia nuts, and mango sorbet. The train stopped at Barron falls for 10 mins or so and we could get down and take some pictures.Thank you for the review, Gold Class sure is the way to travel.Written 3 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 November 2023

- JordanBrisbane Region, Australia50 contributionsFantastic! We purchased the Skyrail and Kuranda Rail combination where we could go up to Kuranda via train from Cairns Station and return on the skyrail with a bus transfer back to the train station. A bit pricey for this combo at $135 each (May 2024) but an awesome experience and well worth doing while in Cairns. Customer service was fantastic with tour operators offering to move to a better seat in a less busy carriage. It was a great way to learn about and experience the history of the Kuranda Rail Line. - WaggaTravellerWagga Wagga, Australia297 contributionsNot to be missedThe Kuranda train trip from Cairns up to Karanda is an absolutely unmissable adventure. Winding through the rainforest marvelling at the vistas across the plains of Cairns through to the Great Barrier Reef you can even see Green Island on a clear day. Marvel at the engineering feet and consider the men who constructed this with such rudimentary instruments all those years ago. The commentary is amazing. If you can afford it, I highly recommend the Gold class as you are treated to a ride in an amazing cabin with a dedicated attendance and a served beautiful food and drinks while you admire the scenery pass by. And experience not to be missed.Thank you so much for taking the time to review. If you are looking for a slow long (2 hours) $50 trip looking at pretty much the same thing except for a large waterfall and a bridge then this trip is for you. The train is not air-conditioned so it can get pretty hot. I found it all a bit too boring. During the trip you do get information about the area from a speaker in your carriage. There is a lack of information in their brochures and on their webpage as in you park your car in Cairns Central Shopping Centre and walk upstairs over the railway line to the station on the other side of the tracks. When you get to Kuranda the train stops outside the village so you can walk to the township or catch a free shuttle bus. We were not informed that the train stopped outside the village. You can drive your own car to the village. We did this in February and there was not a lot open in the markets at Kuranda. We stayed there 2 hours having lunch in a cafe.

Thank you for sharing your feedback Pam.
We'd be lying if we said we weren't disappointed the experience didn't live up to your expectation, however we'll try not to take it personally - we understand a vintage train experience isn't for everyone.
We're sorry you felt there weren't enough views however, we hope at least you found some enjoyment in the 100 year old, vintage refurbished carriages or the history of the railway in the onboard commentary.

We took the Kuranda Scenic Railway to Kuranda, spent the day in Kuranda and then took the Sky Rail to Smithfield. It was over $100 per person. The train is indeed an engineering marvel and the two hour trip is worth it for understanding how limited travel was when Cairns was settled. Heritage Class is not air conditioned, so wear clothes that breathe well.
Kuranda is a pretty standard tourist town and isn’t really worth a visit. The markets are the same you can find in any town. The bird sanctuary is good, as is the butterfly sanctuary, but that’s only an hour all up.
When catching Skyrail back, be warned that the bus connections back to Cairns are few and far between. The time on your return ticket is not so much about the Skyrail gondolas and more the bus connection. We caught a Skyrail gondola maybe 30 minutes before our allotted time. When we arrived at Smithfield, the bus was another hour away. We ended up paying an extra $30 to get an Uber back to Cairns - and this was after paying the extra $20 for the bus transfer.
All up, a very expensive day to witness an engineering marvel.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're glad you enjoyed your rail trip with us and thought our train was as marvelous as we do. The Queensland humidity through summer can be quite challenging, especially aboard a restored heritage train service - thankfully our staff are on hand to assist with complimentary cold towels!

I would not recommend the train ride, as nice as some of the scenery was it’s really not worth it. You don’t see a lot anyway. It was a completely over priced train ride, $50 per person one way to sit inside a steaming hot train carriage with no breeze or air flow and not to mention the poor customer service from the workers who were not helpful or informative. Also be prepared to spend your whole weeks pay while eating/shopping in the town.

We’re disappointed your journey didn’t meet your expectations. We’re troubled to hear our staff were not helpful or informative during your journey, this is unusual and we’ll pass on the feedback.
Our train, made up of carriages 100-years old, is in fact a vintage experience and part of it’s charm. As it is restored to heritage there is no air-conditioning however the open air carriage allows the rainforest breeze and we have drink fountains in each carriage. We understand it can be hot and during this time in Queensland the weather is challenging and the crowds are aplenty during holiday season.
We thank you for your feedback and review.

The railway was on my bucket list for our trip to Cairns. We were planning to travel on Monday or Tuesday however when I tried to book there was no availability. I called the railway (on Sunday) and was advised that the train only runs Thursday to Sunday during March. The lovely lady on the phone said she could hold 2 afternoon tickets for us if we were going up on the Skyrail and returning on the train. This suited us perfectly as otherwise we would have missed the experience.
The Kuranda Station is beautiful and even if you are not riding on the train, it is worth visiting for a photo experience. The train journey is incredible. You will travel through 16 tunnels and over many bridges. There is a stop at Barren Falls station where you can view the magnificent falls.
The journey is approximately 2 hours and at $50pp one way, I believe it is wonderful value.
My husband thought the ride was a bit boring as the views are often obstructed by trees. I personally enjoyed the journey and the informative commentary. If you’re in the area I believe the trip is a must do.

For all the history buffs/train enthusiast this is highly recommended. The scenery is epic, the train a slice of time gone by and the stories of how this line was built is awe inspiring. Great way to travel up to Karunda.

From the mocktail served in the Freshwater Salon while waiting for the train to arrive from Cairns through to Kuranda this is worth every cent.
Once aboard and seated in your lounge chair - a three across plan with a two facing singles on the left and two facing double chairs on the right - you have done all the work required.
Aiko, our carriage attendant, delivered drinks and tasty morsels of food as she expanded on the commentary offered through the speakers. She gave us warning of upcoming sights and where to point our cameras. Aiko worked hard to make the trip to Kuranda seem easy.
The Stoney Creek Falls were running so the train slowed down for this photo opportunity and stopped for ten minutes at Cape Barron Falls.
This is a slow train with an excellent guided commentary and Gold Claass gives it a special edge.
Be aware that the steps to the carriage are narrow and steep.

Boarded this old dilapidated train today for a slow boring ride up the hill to the skyrail terminal. This old train carriage should be retired to a museum , it is quite hot inside and has no airconditioning , bars across the windows and old style bench seating . The waterfall was unimpressive on our ride today , more of a trickle than a waterfall.
No rainforest as such just some old scrub until the train gets to its destination after a very long slow ride in the heat for about an hour or more.
Perhaps when the waterfall is in full flow it would be the only highlight of this ride no refreshments available on the train except a serve yourself water bottle and very little or no hand sanitizer that we could find. Going through one of the longer tunnels we were exposed to the exhaust fumes from the old engine pulling us , not nice breathing in the carbon monoxide fumes .
Unless you love old historic train carriages I would not recommend this crappy ride to anyone , in fact they couldnt pay me enough money to ever get on this again
These train carriages should be condemned and replaced with modern airconditioned carriages with panoramic windows purpose built for the job

Caught the cable car up and train back down. The train trip was the highlight of our trip to Cairns. Allocated seats so request a window. If you are on a budget, you can catch the scenic railway from Cairns station to Kuranda and return for approximately $20 per person one way (compared to the skyrail combined cable car and train which was $229 for 2 people). Scenic Railway is a must and a walk around Kuranda village is pretty.

To essentially parrot what some of the other reviewers have said, some aspects of your holiday you will look back in and say, “That could have been way better.”
The Kuranda Rail Experience was certainly not worth it. It was expensive, boring, and uncomfortable; we were crammed into rail carriages like sardines. Four people to a bench seat, with two benches facing each other, in close proximity to one another. Thank goodness we went in the middle of Cairns winter (the temperature was only ~25 degrees) because if it were the middle of summer, it would have been unbearable. As it was, my wife found it barely tolerable.
If it were the middle of summer, with no fans to be seen whatsoever, it would have been an exercise in torture.
Kuranda itself was also utterly disappointing; a tourist town consisting of cheap bric-à-brac and clothing that looks like it should be in A China Town flea market.
Yes, there were some nice views along the train trip but for the exorbitant price of around $238 (for two people), if you are adamant about visiting the area, I would highly recommend simply renting a car for the day and stopping off at some of the scenic stops along the way.

My husband and I have wanted to do the Kuranda Train experience since we relocated to Cairns six years ago. We have done it previously but many years ago. They had a fantastic offer for locals on Australia Day. We decided to upgrade to First Class going up and then just the standard trip back down. We were warmly greeted by staff on check-in at Cairns Central Railway Station and the trip was explained to us in detail. The Station itself was well-maintained, with seats and tables to sit at while you were waiting. The First Class carriage was fantastic. It had fabric covered chairs and you were allocated a seat. One of us had a window but you could change halfway so that was not an issue. The staff in the First Class carriage were friendly and engaging. They handed us a Menu each where there were three or four items on it. You actually got all of the food items on a small plate, nice cold soft drinks or beer/champagne. The view from the train as it made its way up Kuranda Range was beautiful, with a running commentary as you go. The train stops at Baron Falls near the top where you can disembark to take some photos before making your way to Kuranda Railway Station. We spent a couple of hours at Kuranda before making our way down the Range in one of the standard carriages during a light rain shower. My husband and I found all the staff we encountered to be friendly, engaging and very professional. We loved our trip and cannot recommend this experience more highly for visitors to Cairns.

Hi, we have booked our trip and unfortunately they will be doing maintenance on the train line and cable car that week. Is it still worthwhile to visit Kuranda by bus?
Written 5 January 2024
Lots to do but getting there and leaving is part of the experience. If this is a one off trip go. If you can wait, wait.

Hi we have a couple of people in our group that don’t want to do the cable car can we do the train both ways?
Written 4 June 2021
Yes you can do the train both ways. That is how I used the train to Kuranda and it can give you an extra opportunity to get photo's if you missed out on the first train ride.

Hi Is there anything much to see by train from Cairns to Freshwater? We will have a rental car when we are doing our first trip to Cairns at Christmas and was wondering if things only become scenic from Freshwater onwards or whether it would be advantageous to leave from Cairns station? Sorry, I have had a bit of a look but cannot see anything about it. We will be in Cairns for 14 days. Thank you
Written 26 September 2020
The benefit of getting on the train at Cairns is that it leaves from Cairns Central Shopping Centre so you can park your car in the shopping centre which is undercover which will help your car not getting really hot from the summer sun. You will also get on the train before others do at the other stations . Best views are from the right hand side of the train that is looking forward on the train.

Kuranda Scenic Railway is able to assist customers who wish to avoid stairs with use of our ramps and lifts at all stations apart from Barron Falls Station.
There is a courtesy bus that takes customers from Kuranda Station to Kuranda Village to avoid a slight slope upon entering the village.

Hi, Dannielle. What would you like to know about this attraction?
Hi all. Did you do a pre-booked day tour, or book this independently, i.e. book a oneway rail ticket, and then when in Kuranda book a one way cable back? and do they start and end at the same place? and any idea of cost doing it that way rather than a prebooked tour.
What do you recommend?
Written 24 January 2019
I did a prebook as that was the easiest for me as i got picked up from my hotel. You can just go and get a ticket, not sure off cost, and it's quite a way out off town.

We will have 3 days in Cairns. I was wondering if we should spend a whole day here (doing the train up and skyrail down) and then another day going up Captain Cook Highway to see Trinity Beach, the Daintree Discovery Centre and Mossman Gorge. Will these 2 days be too much similar? Worth it to do all that? Third day will be scuba diving/snorkeling at GBR. It will be just my husband and I; we prefer outdoorsy nature activities. Any suggestions will be appreciated. (Coming from US

Hi
Yes its a full day for the skyrail and train but well worth doing
As for other things, we stayed in Trinity Beach , it is a nice beach location but you can see the whole place in 30 mins as you can with all the other beachy places up the coast so i would not botjer
Daintree and Mossaman will take a day so with your 3rd day diving you will be busy
If you can fit in Hartleys crocodiles, also well worth a visit

I plan to be in Cairns around the first of December of this year. Do I need to make reservations for the Kuranda Rail from Freshwater station and then Skyrail far in advance or can I arrange this the day before doing it or just show up? I will be doing the coach transfer from/to Cairns as well since I am not driving.
Last question, is it best to face down the mountain or up the mountain in choosing my seating on the train? I will be starting from Freshwater. Also someone indicated being on the right side of the train from Freshwater you get more to see than the left - comments? Any comments - thanks.

Will be staying in a apartment 350 metres away from the train that takes you to Kuranda so wondering if it’s easier to catch the train and sky rail ourselves or book with someone and get picked up not sure on prices if we do ourselves
Going up in July
Thanks

You can book via your accommodation and you will be picked up, dropped at the sky rail and when you come back down on the train the same people will pick you up and drop you back at your accommodation. I assume they still have that option. Took all the hassles out of getting a taxi. Your accommodation should be able verify this for you. Enjoy your trip. It’s a great place to go. Another must see is Hartley crocodile farm. You can also book a pick up and drop off from the place you are staying. Good luck. Ainslie
