- mojoLondon, United Kingdom45 contributionsfabulous !As visitors from the UK, we found the variety of plants and the way they were presented amazing, and with good walkways that let you meander through the different areas. Found the rainforest walk particularly interesting. An intriguing couple of hours. Easy to get to from central Cairns by bus or taxi etc.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 November 2023
- Rochelle FRandolph, New Jersey1,196 contributionsNice gardens with mostly greenery when we visitedWe walked all the way from our hotel to the gardens. Most of it is greenery and is very nice although there were some nice flowers to see. The butterfly atrium did not have butterflies but the green plants were beautiful to see (and it provided a place to hang out when there was a sudden downpour). There are very nice paths winding around the gardens and we enjoyed visiting.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2024
- vickiebypassStamford, Connecticut322 contributionsGarden with Unique AreasThe Cairns Botanical Gardens are big, but it was stultifyingly hot (at least to me) and a garden isn’t necessarily the best place to be unless you’re in the shade. But this garden has a rainforest boardwalk, which is just what it sounds like - a raised boardwalk through a mini-rainforest. Theoretically, it sounded humid and full bugs to me, but I was here, it was there so off I went. Another scenario where I had it all wrong – the rainforest was shady and the palms reached so high skyward. Sunlight dappled the floor of the rainforest, there were various birds and sounds of big leaves dropping, plus other noises. There were two types of palm groves and a boggy area. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed looking at the bark on the different trees, how the palm leaves/fronds grow, all the dead leaves on the floor and searching out any floral growth on the palms; it was very quiet, velvety air and warm, but I was glowing, not dripping with sweat. Three people passed me who were striding briskly on their way to somewhere – or just getting exercise. Although the Aboriginal Plant Use Garden is small, it was interesting to me, as was the Bamboo Collection (I had no idea there are so many varieties) and the Flecker Gardens.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 18 April 2024
- Nicholas CCanberra, Australia34 contributionsA very pleasant place to spend a few hours. We could have spent more time there, but access was easy from the street and the walking tracks were well marked. There was some wonderful flora there with many interesting tropical trees and plants. The low-lying areas off of the wooden walking track across the street from the main entrance were full of water. Next time we will explore some more areas that we did not get to this time.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 April 2024

- allanernestwCanberra, Australia27 contributionsA beautiful shady oasis just out of Cairns city, a lovely break from the beach and pool.A lovely cool respite from the FNQ sun. Compact, shady, great variety of Australian and overseas plants. Well signed. Good descriptions of how First Nations people utilised native plants in their everyday lives. A lovely cafe and coffee shop, again lots of shaded seating. And no admission fee, all courtesy of the Cairns City Council.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 July 2024
- 456brianlAdelaide, Australia225 contributionsBeautiful and relaxingWe have a couple of hours before our flight out of Cairns and decided to visit Botanic Garden. It was just a 5mins Uber drive from the airport. The garden was lush and full of subtropical plants, supposed they get a fair bit of rain lately. A very easy way to walk around.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 August 2024

Walked out to the gardens (about an hour from town at a relaxed pace) and then caught the bus home. Wondering around the gardens was very pleasant. lots of information supplied around the walkways. the information centre was closed but the cafe was open. they are however facing restricted space problems so if you are unable to get a seat there, there is another cafe in the gardens themselves (something the first cafe neglected to tell us at the time which I found more than a little annoying). Really enjoyed our day.

One of my favourite places to visit in Cairns (restaurant/cafe on site). What is better than free? Nothing! As an ex tour guide I always told my customers of this wonder(so close to the city hotels) I love it sooo much I know live (bought an apartment close by) 10 mins walking distance from the place. Cannot praise enough.

“ Tell me and I forget; Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn”
Benjamim Franklin is quoted as saying this many years ago but it translates exactly to the tour at the Botanic Gardens tour that I participated in last Wednesday.
I had a relaxed, yet enthusiastic morning guided by Barry, who made all the difference in our day, he shared his knowledge about plants and involved us. I learnt a lot about the history of Cairns. Barry, who works as a volunteer, had charisma and conducted the tour with promptness. He also showed us the diversity and value of this wonderful place.
Overall, I’d recommend going on this tour, especially if you are curious about botanical science like me. I’m sure you will have a great time too.

Beautifully maintained gardens in a compact area, but still offering a variety of tropical habitats.
We'd spent several hundred dollars on a tour to the Daintree a couple of days earlier and to be honest we should have just come here for free. I'm sure the natural rainforests are beautiful if you can get off the beaten track, but let's face it most organised tours don't and can't, so what you're left with is the weed-infested roadside. Far better to come here.
We'd bought beautiful fresh made rolls and a coffee two minutes down the road at Victor's Gourmet Delicatessen (can highly recommend) and ate them sitting on a bench, feeling the serenity....

We visited here a few years ago and loved it, hence another visit. The gardens are lovely and quite different from the southern states with its emphasis on tropical flora. On arrival suggest going to the visitors centre to get a map. The map shows where certain exhibits are situated and also notes a few items of interest such as the Cannonball Tree. The gardens are well maintained and quite beautiful. It is clear that many of the plants featured in the movie 'Avatar' were inspired by this lovely place. The gardens also offer guided tours, but check ahead of time when these will be conducted and if bookings are required. Across the road from the main gardens is a rainforest boardwalk, lakes and other displays. Next to the visitor centre is a delightful cafe. Inside the visitor centre there is a gift shop offering Australian themed gifts…..great souvenirs. Well worth a visit; we will go again next time we are in FNQ.

This is well worth visiting if you like flowers and plants but make sure that you spray yourself with insect repellant if biters like you. The garden itself is well worth the trip but it is not within walking distance and you will need to take a taxi or the hourly bus that starts from the stop in between the Station and the Shopping Centre. You can spend several hours walking around and it is free so you can afford to say fares. Plenty of choice of food and drink is available.

I haven’t written a review for many years but I must write one today as unexpectedly this morning was the highlight of my Cairns trip. Initially I just wanted to have a bit walk in the botanic garden to find the fan palm tree as I can’t make it to Daintree this time. I really enjoyed the walking as it is so nice and quiet compared with the botanic garden in Sydney and the plants are so beautiful in the morning sunshine. And then I bumped into Dr Henze’s guided tour which completely blew my mind. This is the best guided tour in any botanic gardens that I have ever been to. Dr Henze has extensive knowledge of all the plants and explained everything so clearly and interestingly with all the lovely stories behind each plant. I majored in biology when I was in the university but everything that she talked about was still so fascinating to me and fell in love with all the surrounding plants. I really wish she taught me botany back then and I may have been doing a completely different job now. How much she loves what she was telling us about and how she managed to calmly balance her talk and her cute son during the tour was very inspiring to me. I am not sure how to book a tour with her but highly recommend this tour to anyone who plans to visit Cairns Botanic Garden!

Spent a lovely morning wandering through these beautiful gardens. Gardens are beautiful; exhibitions well signed and informative. The butterfly garden in particular was spectacular - to see a butterfly testing its wings just 20 minutes after its birth, and others flying around in this special place was awe-inspiring. A very helpful and enthusiastic guide was on hand to point out these special things.

We went to Cairns Botanical gardens and had a lovely day . The perfect winter August day was just the right temperature for walking around the lush tropical plants . Parking is good and a very short walk to the first cafe for a very good coffee and fresh fruit juice . The bromilliad garden was my favourite but all the different tropical flowers and trees are great to see . I also loved the butterflies , will come back again for sure.

Are we allowed to bring our own food & (plastic bottle) drink into the gardens? My mum is 77 & needs a sit down & snack every now & then. Is there much seating around the gardens? Or a little shuttle bus? Thanks

We are looking forward to visiting before flying out. Is there any place (or locker) to store luggage? Thanks in advance!
Written 8 June 2019
It would be best to leave travel bags at your hotel/ at counter for porters fee while you look at the botanical gardens as I haven't seen lockers there also I believe the airport can hold travel bags again fee's will apply but lockers are small size. Hope this helps.
Written 8 June 2019
You can ride to it, & walk up the red arrow (hill) but not in the actual gardens.

Hi, would a half day (approx 4 hours) be enough to walk through& fully experience the gardens?
Thanks
Written 24 October 2016
Hello Deninu
Half a day spent at the Botanic Gardens and adjoining Centenary Lakes is ideal. Visit the Orchid House with the butterflies, and cross Collins Avenue to walk along the boardwalk to the Centenary Lakes with the Chinese Gardens. The Botanic Gardens Restaurant is known for its breakfast and waffles. If you are fit - walk the Red Arrow to Mount Whitfield or spend longer and walk the Green Arrow and you may come across a cassowary. Check out the Tanks and see what is exhibiting or catch a performance. These concrete tanks were built in WW2 by the Americans to store fuel. They have great artists from around the world perform there and the acoustics is fantastic. The last Sunday morning of each month there is the Tanks Markets. Also once a month there is Starlight Theatre in the Botanic Gardens. You could also take guided walks through the Botanics. Enjoy the beautiful Cairns Botanic Gardens.
