Recently did the Gulflander/Savannahlander 5 day tour & was very onjoyable & informative. Tour included visits to Cobbold Gorge & Undara lava tubes plus an evening tour of the township of Forsayth (very well done). Have been wanting to do trip for many years & finally got around to it. Overnight accommodation was basic & clean but was only for 1-2 nights so not really an issue.
Met many interesting outback locals & had a good group on our tour. Th eonly downer was a 6:30am start for our day 1 bus trip (11 hours) to Normanton.
When boarding the train @ Forsayth, we even had 2 young girls dressed in period costume entertain us with violin & cello.
We had Hamish & Joe as our drivers for trip & they were extremly knowledgable on the history of the area & the track/train - a credit to the company!!
For those of you that need to be contactable whilst away, you will need full Telstra mobile service or WiFi if motel has it.

We've intended to get on the Savannahlander for about twenty years and here we finally are getting aboard. We went from Forsayth (silent "a") to Cairns over three days, and we're very glad we have finally done it
We learned, from the excellent commentary, that the part of the railway from Forsayth to Dimbulah had been built quickly and economically, using steel sleepers with the rails welded on. This meant we couldn't go very quickly, so we had plenty of time to listen to the commentary and to see everything.
after Dimbulah the lane was better built and eventually welded.
The tea break at Cafe Bloodwood siding was fun and a chance to use our smart new free mugs.
Meals were all excellent and very generous, and the commentary was really fascinating. The population shifts and mining started and failing was something I knew nothing about.
Well worth the money

What a great trip the drivers Will and Hamish were great, Will was the expert on the wild life and nature in the area, whilst Hamish was the expert on the engineering side of the train and the country side. between them with their stories they made the trip very enjoyable.

We did the short trip getting the bus from Cairns, staying overnight at Undara and returning on the Savannahlander the next day.
If you are doing this trip and are staying at Undara l would recommend getting off at the Undara turn off and being picked up by staff from Undara rather that travelling to Mount Surprise and having to later return to Undura.
Overall it was a memorable trip and the drivers Wil and Joe were not just train drivers but informative and welcoming hosts. We have been on many train journeys but this one is unique as the driver can stop anywhere if something of interest is seen.
The bus ride on the Trans North service was very comfortable and the driver Steve was also friendly and informative.
The Undara lava tubes were spectacular and it was enjoyable staying in the restored train carriage at Undara.
Kevin was our tour guide and coach driver from Undara and he also was welcoming and informative. Actually all the staff we encountered on this trip including at the Railway hotel at Amalden were friendly and helpful.

What a great trip. The coordination of the various elements without a specific tour leader was impressive . The local providers did their very best to provide excellent and friendly service in often quite isolated communities .
It has to be remembered that taking this trip is to experience authentic vintage train travel, and to visit communities, towns and countryside that would not otherwise be easily accessed.
This is not marketed as luxury travel but as an experience , and a measure of independence , personal responsibility and spirit of adventure is required .The experiences and places visited and memories made are worth it.

A fantastic tour travelling on a 1963 Rail Motor across the Savannah from Forsayth to Cairns. The guides - Will and Hamish - were so knowledgeable, helpful and eager to make sure we enjoyed our time outback. They are passionate about their work. A delicious morning tea stop in the middle of 'no where', lunch at isolated country pubs, changing landscapes, great commentary on the flora, fauna plus details about the rail network and the history of the country - all highly recommended.

This was supposed to be a wonderful trip but in fact, it was terrible. The train's seats were very uncomfortable and way too small. The rear carriage was hot and airless. The curtains, if you can call them that, gave absolutely no protection from the sun. The toilet area was filthy. The ride itself was very uncomfortable. Many passengers said they had sore backs. For the money this business is getting there should be considerable improvements made with passenger comfort in mind. The food at Mt Surprise Discovery Park was disappointing- dried sandwiches for lunch one day and an apple dessert covered with muesli on the last night. On two nights we were stuck with a neighbour who had a barking cough with her partner talking just about all night. The accommodation at Almaden, Mt Surprise and Forsayth were fine. However, we were expected to carry our luggage a long way to rooms with not even an offer of a trolly- this is a big ask for older passengers. The food at both Almaden and Forsayth was good. The two drivers did a great job but we have been cured of ever going on another train trip.

Well where do I start. The whole experience was of the highest quality. The personable staff, Will and Sandra went above and beyond to ensure everyone on board(all 81 of us) were immersed in the history of train travel from a bygone era. The train is comfortable with plenty of fun to be had by all. Morning tea prepared by Will and Sandra was a highlight as was Will's commentary on all things Savannah. Sandra was also a very personable driver and source of info. I found that they both bought a bit of Ying and Yang to the experience. Nothing was to much trouble for the staff and I felt they genuine and really involved in their passion for their job. The company should be very proud of these two who typify the type of employee that enhances the "Savannahlander " brand. I am definitely not a train buff however after this trip I better understood the romance of outback train travel. This is a must do trip.
You may even see a "Platypus " or "Platypie". Ask Will to explain. Hahaha.

One of the truely iconic railway trips anywhere in the world. Taking in such a wide expanse of Queensland with different ecosystems, wildlife and towns.
I am not a great fan of "tours" but this one very special four days. The drivers Hamish and Joe are just sensational - they provide plenty of information and colour to really make the experience special. If your a railway buff its very cool and if you just like travel and experiencing different things this is even more cool. The wildlife alone is almost non stop.
If you haven't done this you need to - its something you will enjoy and at the end of four days it will leave you wanting to just come back for more.

Hi there,
have booked the 4 day trip for May 2023.
Would love any tips on packing.
What did you pack that was a success?
What did you wish you packed?
What did you pack that you didn't need? etc etc

I did the 'Rail Runner' trip in May 2022. The temperature was in the mid to high twenties for the whole of the trip, so hats, sunglasses and sunscreen are advisable.
Keep anything you may need between overnight stops in a separate day pack - your main bag is in an open area of the train, but may not be readily accessible.
If you are device heavy, take a small multi outlet powerboard for charging phones, cameras, watches etc.
Carry some cash for incidental purchases along the way (Dimbulah, Almaden, Einasleigh, Mt. Surprise, Forsayth) as EFTPOS can be slow, and staff at some of the remote stops can be exceptionally busy when the train arrives and its passengers start making demands :-).
Enjoy!

Hi, would love to do when I am passing through. Can I do it as a single and does it cost more?
Savannahlander
Cairns, Australia
Hi there - yes single travellers are most welcome on the Savannahlander. The cost depends on what fare or package you would like to do. In a nutshell we would charge you for one rail fare, however for most of the packages which include accommodation you will need to pay for a whole room (usually shared cost in a double or twin-share). This comes out in our pricing as the "Single Supplement".
Please see our website and click on "Tours" for all the details.
Does it stop at Chillagoe? And how do I get back to Cairns from there?

Hi, The Savvanahlander stops the first night at Almaden and you bus into Chillagoe as the train line no longer goes there. After Chillagoe you have another 2 nights/3 days on the train. If you speak to the Savvanahlander people you maybe able to spend 3 nights in Chillagoe and catch the train from Almaden on the return journey.
The 4 days are a great trip.

What time does the Barron River Rover leave Cairns station please?
Thanks Glenn.
Savannahlander
Cairns, Australia
Hi there Glenn,
Thanks for your question, the Barron River Rover is a "short tour" that we offer that allows you to depart with the rest of the group doing the 4 day tour but return on the first day by bus.
If effect, you leave with the normal service which departs the platform at 6:30 am every Wednesday morning. Keep in mind that you will need to allow time to purchase your tickets and get on board, so it's best to arrive 15 minutes early at the Cairns Central Railway Station.
Regards,
Robert.

morning just wondering if this tour is suitable for familys ? one having special needs. thank you
RobynK70
Gold Coast, Australia15 contributions
It depends on how severe the 'special needs' is. If it is a mobility issue, the train has a lift which was used for luggage and a number of elderly passengers used this to get on and off the train easily. The staff were most cooperative and helpful with this. If toiletting is an issue, it would not be suitable. There is no handicapped toilet on the train, and because of the roughness of the track at times men were advised to sit while using the toilet. I think you would also need to check the accessibility of the night stopovers, they could advise on your needs. Cobbold Gorge and the Lava Tubes would not be at all suitable for wheelchairs. The board walks at the Lava tubes have a number of steps.
The trip is quite suitable for families, but children would need to be able to cope with each day's lengthy train trips. Parental support and management would be needed. You can take snacks and drinks on board and store them in the cooler. There is also plenty of opportunity to walk up and down the carriage and also sit with the driver. My grandchildren would have enjoyed it.

Hi there,
Can you tell me the difference between the two four day tours apart from the cost and also as I'm hoping to go in November, will the cobbold gorge definitely be off the itinerary. Will there be any chance of any swimming on any of the trips?
Thanks
Savannahlander
Cairns, Australia
Hi there!
Thanks for your question. There have been some changes to the accommodation providers along the route and for the 2017 season (and onwards!) the ONLY difference will be that for the Outback Odyssey for Wednesday night we will accommodate you in the Chillagoe Cabins (as a preference, and the Chillagoe Guesthouse if the Cabins are full) plus that on the Thursday night you will stay at the Undara Lava Lodge in either their Railway Carriages Cabins or in their Pioneer Huts. Due to a limited availability of these venues we will only be offering this tour (The Outback Odyssey) on selected dates throughout the year.
For the Savannah Explorer (which will run on most dates) you will be staying at Chillagoe in the Ecolodge (by preference with overflow to the Motel) and that on Thursday night you will stay in Mt Surprise at the Bedrock Village Caravan Park (Ensuite Cabins) and do a bus tour of the Undara Lava Tubes.
Hopefully that helps - please feel free to ask if you have any other questions!

Hi Beth. What time of year did you travel? How did you handle the heat with no air conditioning on the train? Thanks Helen
Savannahlander
Cairns, Australia
Hi there Helen!
Thanks for the question - you are correct that the train itself is not air-conditioned, but all the windows open and you are free to move around inside the carriage.
For most of the year it is a very pleasant temperature, but on occasions later in the year (around December) it has been known to get a bit warm. As the train moves through the country the temperature does vary, and the airflow through the windows is very nice!
If you like, we can recommend that you bring along a towel to sit on to make your trip more comfortable.
It is also correct that we have water on the train along with a cooler box to keep your drinks cool. If you would like to stock the Esky with cans or bottles of drinks - just ask your friendly drivers to stop and fill the Esky with crushed ice to keep your drinks frosty-cold!
Thanks again for the question!

any room for parking cars
Savannahlander
Cairns, Australia
Hi there! Yes there certainly is. The train departs from Cairns Central railway station and their is a standing arrangement that you can leave your car parked there for free if you are travelling on the train. Please talk to the parking station attendants when you arrive to make the required arrangements.
