Green Island - Not the place for Great Barrier Reef Snorkeling

My husband and I took the Great Adventures trip to Green Island to snorkel but we were very disappointed as the reef is bleached out and has no color. We expected to at least see an abundance and variety of fish but were disappointed with that as well as the fish were few and far between. We went another day,... More

The company and crew did nothing wrong. The booking experience was OK, the boat was OK. But Green island is just too busy for us. Hundreds of tourists from multiple boats crowd the island. Just not the sort of experience we enjoy. The snorkelling was OK. As was the lunch ($extra).

If you are hoping to see the Great Barrier Reef the Green Island day trip is not the right choice. The boat is comfortable and fast but does not get you to the outer reef which is what you want if you really want to see and experience the reef. Snorkeling on the island will get you some fish and... More

We booked with this company because it was the only one that seemed to offer any "eco" credentials. We were duped. As other reviewers, we found the trip overcrowded and clearly aimed at fleecing overseas tourists. We'd travelled up from Melbourne - and could come back another time - but if those visiting from overseas have only this as their... More

This was by far the coolest thing I have ever done. We went to several different reefs and had plenty of time to snorkel or dive at each one. There were snorkeling and scuba diving guides available. The reefs were so full of color and marine life. I would definitely recommend this!!!!!! So cool and awesome staff

We started off the day in the marine terminal where we boarded the boat which was very comfortable with staff who were very accommodating. We received free tea and coffee throughout the whole journey. The boat stopped off at Green Island where day trippers got off and then continued to the pontoon before which we were giving a safety guide... More

2 friends and I took the Silver Swift day trip to the outer reef for certified diving (one friend), snorkeling (other friend), and an introductory dive (me). It was a very full day with 3 dive sites and exceptional instructors guiding each of the different groups. For intro diving, we were trained in the hour+ ride out to the first... More

If you want to see corals, take the vessel and go to the barrier reef. Great Adventures has nice boats and a very good platform in the coral reef area, where you can snorkel or scuba dive, and enjoy lunch. Much better than Green Island. In fact Green Island is for people than do not snorkel/dive and prefer stay on... More

Took to/from Green Island...free tea/coffee was limited availability and minimal quality. A lot of attempted up-selling of tours available on Green Island with captive audience. Never the less, this was a fast, safe, fairly reasonably priced way to get to Green Island compared to some other options.

Top notch company with an outstanding crew and staff. Several other choices available at same location but no comparison with professionalism. Very comfortable ride out to reef. Include the Green Island stop only if you want a shallow practice swim before the true reef. Once arriving at the anchored barge, go immediately to the submersible for a true untethered trip...
