We did the half day, and it was a decent experience. Its a pretty quick trip, but thats expected based on what's advertised. Unfortunately it's almost too short to really get into it. It takes a while for people without much rafting experience to get confident in even the basics, so while you do get to paddle a fair share, the guide seems to be doing a lot of the work. The rapids are decent, and the guides are nice, but all in all I think a longer day may be necessary to fully enjoy a rafting experience.
That said, for being a short trip it was pretty fun, and if you are just looking for a taste of white water rafting this is probably pretty perfect. My only complaint was during the 'surfing' portion of the trip. At one point the guide asks us to turn back upstream and steer into the hole created by the rapid. This can be a fun experience, as I've done it on previous trips, but I don't think I'd ever sat in the front. The front two seats nearly get drowned. We could barely hold on, and the water shoots at high velocity into your face for a good 15s-30s making it impossible to breathe, and really hard to enjoy yourself. Not to mention this is one of the better photo ops, and in nearly every photo their photographer takes we are completely submerged and not visible. The photos are a good value, but considering we weren't in most of them, we opted not to buy.

My friends and I booked a hotel in Mission Beach to stay the night before the White Water Rafting in Tully River. We were then picked up by RnR at 7.30am, and arrived at the meeting point by 8.30am. By 9am, we were on a bus on the way to the starting point of the rafting trip.
We were then divided into groups of 6 - based on our friends and our preference for the type of adventure we wanted. They wanted to know if we wanted just a normal-ish ride, or to have our raft turned over. Since we're not all very strong swimmers, we opted for the normal-ish ride.
Our guide was probably one of the cookiest of the lost - he was a little rough on the edge, but he commanded the raft very well. Though only one of us had any rafting/kayaking experience before, it was easy enough to get into the rhythm of it. The first few minutes were on grade 1-2 rapids, which helped us get used to the paddling and the movement of the raft.
From there on, it was grade 3-4 rapids, and 4 hours of fun. The photos speak for themselves!

It is essentially a day tip out to Tully River where you spend well over 3 hours going through level 4 rapids and waterfalls. You will get to see some truly breathtaking views of the mountains, mist, river, waterfalls etc. I wouldn't recommend bringing a camera or anything valuable on the trip as you won't have anywhere to put it while rafting, plus you will get soaking wet. Do dress appropriately as advised by the website.
All in all, it was truly one of the most exhilirating, action-packed and electrifying days of my life. The Rafter guides are an amazing bunch of people who are very diligent in ensuring your utmost safety throughout the entire experience. Enjoy all the many laughs you will have over all the jokes and stories you will share with this lot.

RnR and Raging Thunder seem to have merged and are now one company. I went down the Tully River with them. The river was great with exciting rapids and even a tall rock to jump off.
Unfortunately, the staff left a little something to be desired. Our guide was pleasant, but didn't really add anything to the trip. The guy in charge of the day was very business-oriented and didn't react too kindly with unexpected delays. Same with the bus driver. Overall, the river was great, but if another company offers the trip, I would try them out.

If you want to truly put your life at risk - this is for you.
Inexperienced guides on the Barron river rapids.
Large amounts of water, every raft was at some stage nearly flipped, jagged on a rock, people thrown out of the raft & nearly drowned, banged up or put in significant danger.
If you value you safety, stay away from these fools!

From the time we were picked up at our accommodation til the time we were dropped back...laughs, fun, felt safe, looked after, fed. My first time & was nervous & excited but our guide Rabs was the best. Best day out so far on our trip...would highly recommend doing this.

It was my first time rafting and it was very smooth. The guides were friendly and we felt safe all the time. There were not many wild sites and it was a good trip for beginners. But the guides made sure we would definitely get wet.

We went whitewater rafting on the Barron River on a shore excursion during a cruise. Lloyd, or guide, was knowledgeable, relaxed, and has a great sense of humor. He made us all feel confident in his professionalism and skill. This, in turn, allowed us to feel confident, relaxed, and set the stage for a great afternoon.
The river itself is fairly tightly controlled by a branch of the government, so we didn't run into a ton of other rafting groups. The rapids weren't particularly difficult on there day we were there, though I'm sure I'd be singing a different song if Lloyd hadn't been there.
Our equipment appeared to be well taken care of.

I'm usually panicky in fast waters but found this a lot more fun than I ever imagined!
Rob, our guide, was awesome and gave us headsup and information on all the upcoming rapids. He skillfully navigated the steep slopes, vertical drops, holes, etc and none of us fell overboard (when we didn't intend to). We were given opportunities to swim in the calmer parts of the river too and jump off a cliff. We were also happily drenched by the cold waterfall ;p We were given a choice to fall overboard at one of the last rapids called river guide's revenge. This was good fun and very safe and all of us opted for it.
We felt safe during the whole trip and they put guides on safety watch at the bigger class 4 rapids.
Only negative was the lunch which which was not too filling.
Tips
1. Book with RNR for additional discount if you intend to self-drive to Hotel Feluga (Raging Thunder didn't have discount for self-drive). Raging Thunder and RNR are running the rafting together under the same company.
2. Bring along your waterproof cameras which could be attached to helmets/lifevests. There are lots of opportunities to capture fantastic actions as we wait for other rafts before and after the big rapids and at the cliff jumping point.
3. Share pictures with your rafting mates. Pictures are selling at $10 each and $60 for a full set. The usb stick costs additional $5.
4. Non-beef eatets should indicate during booking so that vegetarian patties will be brought for lunch.
5. Put your suncreen in the little bag that they will carry to lunch. This allows you to reapply the suncreen during the lunch break. This is important to prevent sun burn.
6. Spectacled rafters could bring along their optical goggles.

We had a great day rafting on the Tully river. The river gorge offers great scenary and the rapids are good enough to give you a thrill but not scary. Our guide was lots of fun and liked to play with us, he intentionally capsized the raft once so we all fell in the water. I would not advise the trip if your are not comfortable in the water, you don't need to be a good swimmer as you wear a life jacket but avoid if not having total control makes you panic or let your guide know at the start. We were all non native english speakers and some with limited understading but the guide repeated explanations were easy to understand (he did not hesitate to make sounds or mimic actions to make sure we all understood). The lunch was descent and hot which was welcome on a rather chilly day. The break was too short for me as we arrived last and I did not have time to have a coffee to warm me up but I understand you can't wait for everyone. The only point taht could have been better is that the guide did not give much information on the river, the wildlife or historic fact. There are a few calm sections on the river that would provide a good opportunity to give a bit of information on the area. In summary, this is heaps of fun for people with a sense of adventure and humor and are not afraid of water.

Is there much climbing involved? Like down to the river and after the rafting back up the hill? Only asking as I've done the rafting in Bali, totally loved it but the climb up down and then back up nearly killed me lol I was in tears trying to climb back up the hill !

Hi: My girlfriend and I will be arriving in Cairns by cruise ship at 12:00 pm on February 22 2018. We would like to do the half day rafting and can we get transportation from the cruise pier and back? Please let me know what the cost will be for the party of two and do you accept American Express.
