About
The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) is a single institution located across two adjacent river-side buildings in the Cultural Precinct at Brisbane's South Bank. QAGOMA holds a collection of historical, modern and contemporary art, and stages a dynamic program of Australian and international exhibitions. We are home to the Children's Art Centre which collaborates on interactive artworks with leading artists from around the world, and the Australian Cinematheque, the only dedicated cinema facility in an Australian art museum. QAGOMA operates its own retail outlets and cafes and restaurants, proceeds from which support the Gallery.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Very disappointing place! Not much imagination in my opinion, seen much better work by school children. Very little to see. I have visted many galleries in Lindon, New York, Paris etc so I do have something to compare it with.
Cafe is a very nice location but not reasonably priced and menu has no sandwiches, rolls, wraps etc..all rather unusual concoctions!
Unless you are into very different way out weird simplistic 'stuff' ...give it a miss!!

I attended with my daughter and 2.5 year old grandson. At $18 each for entry was expensive to see a creek bed and a watering hole basically the main exhibits. We were done in about 15 mins as you can only walk around the outside of the watering hole not much fun for 2.5 year old trying to keep him away from the exhibit. Very disappointing.

We visited both the Museum of Modern Art and the Queensland Art Gallery. Both were disappointing insomuch as both had large areas closed for the setting up of new exhibitions. This was particularly true of the Modern Art Gallery where if you're not interested in the Chiharu Shiota exhibition (and at $22 dollars per person many will not be) then it's frankly not worth visiting the gallery. The Queensland Art Gallery was more worthwhile in that the pieces on display from it's permanent collection had changed substantially from the last time we visited - but still lots of areas being set up for new material. Perhaps spring is simply the wrong time to visit with both galleries transitioning to lots of new exhibitions?
One plus though was lunch at the Queensland Gallery's cafe. Lovely outdoor setting.

Hi, indeed you are correct, both the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art were in the middle of a major Gallery wide change over from 'The 10th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art', and the exhibition 'Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Tremble' had just opened when you visited. We hope to see you back again now that all the Gallery spaces have re-opened . Our major summer ticketed exhibition 'Air' opens 26 November. Regards QAGOMA

To see a collection of European masters of this calibre in Brisbane is almost unbelievable. QGOMA suggest to allow 1 to 1.5 hours to view but that is just scraping the surface of these paintings.
A benefit of COVID is the crowd control. You could see the pictures quite comfortably without pressing crowds.
Doubtless as the exhibition draws to a close it will get more crowded. However, despite complaints from other reviewers, the staff on hand were helpful and did forewarn of an hour and a half queue; it was shorter. And, yes, that is comparable with the length of queues to overseas attractions of a similar calibre that I have experienced.

This exhibition incorporates diverse mediums to portray various interpretations of water.
Interactive, educational, relaxing, beautiful & thought provoking. What else is there? Appealing to the senses & values of our existence.
Wonderful exhibition.

While I cannot say that I always get the reamins behind some modern artworks, this certainly did not leave me with the feeling of "what the?" The works presented were informative in that good explantions were given. The current exhibition of WATER was very good and for those who like it ..very interactive. So enough to keep the kids occupied and engaged.

I went yesterday and marvelled at all the buildings in this incredible cultural quarter. Catch the free 20 minute film, Floating McDonald's for a comment on our times. My favourite area was the Children's Museum where it really is fun to choose colours and patterns to create a costume that comes to life at the end. Then walk the runway.

There is so much to see and do and most of it is free. The displays and exhibitions change regularly and there is always something new. Many of the areas are interactive. I like to go there on my own and just wander around at my own pace. Other times I take the grand kids and we have a fantastic time and always learn something.

Visited GOMA over the weekend from Sydney and I actually loved it. The whole experience of Water GOMA, there was a very nice and friendly volunteer who walked us around and introduced key artworks the insights behind them. Of course there are areas which if FOC for us to walk around, it is ideal for weekend chill out and if you are feeling a bit artsy.

We happened to be in town so visited the European masterpieces from the Met in New York. It was really crowded (even on a Monday) and the pieces were frankly second rate. We enjoyed seeing a few of them (a Sisley was a high point) but the Degas and Monet were not high quality examples. For the entry price, we were a little disappointed, but since we can't get to the Met at present, this will have to do...

Free to wander the museum. However, certain special exhibitions do have admission prices. They vary exhibition to exhibition.
