We had a boat trip to the Koala sanctuary booked as part of our holiday package. We were due to go up on the 10am slow boat which takes 70 minutes. We arrived at the pontoon at 8:50 and found there was a fast boat going at 9am which takes 40 minutes. For an extra $10aud we decided to go on the fast boat as we had read reviews about people not getting to hold the Koalas due to arriving after bus tours arrive.

The fast boat was actually a great experience in its own right!

So we arrived at the sanctuary and got straight round to the Koala holding area. Paid $25aud for one of us to hold a Koala with us both being in a professional photo. A truly lovely experience and we only had to queue for about 10 minutes.

The sanctuary is a great place. We loved being able to walk amongst kangaroos and wallabies and being able to hand feed them.

We also loved the raptor show which had various birds of prey flying over the audience! Amazing getting brushed by a barn owl wing as it flies just over your head!

We also went to the Koala talk which was very informative.

Loved the sanctuary. Enough to see and do and the park isn’t too huge to walk around.

We then got the slow boat back to Brisbane. This was great sitting up on the top deck, looking at the sights sipping some wine and beer which was very reasonably priced.

So would highly recommend this trip and definitely take the early boat as by 11am the Koala queue was enormous!

We had a beautiful and relaxing experience of cruising the Brisbane River at twighlight. We were welcomed on board by two friendly crew and started the night with a mimosa! The city sights by day are stunning but the return trip at night was the prize. A 30 minute cruise to the historic Brisbane Powerhouse at New Farm where we docked for a brief stopover. We were met by Duty Manager Jaki who took us on a 30 minute tour behind the scenes, learning of the history of the Powerhouse. This was a really interesting tour and Jaki was very engaging. Loved the history, including the graffiti. After the tour we had 30 minutes to enjoy a drink and some warm bites to eat and to take in the river view from one of the decks. Then back on the boat to enjoy the city lights.
This is a lovely cruise for a group of local friends to enjoy. Not just for the tourists! We were spoilt and had the boat to ourselves as the impact of COVID can still be felt. Would highly recommend supporting this local business.

Our family really enjoyed this cruise. It started on time and ended on time too. The view was spectacular and the sanctuary was really interesting. The staff on board was courteous and helpful. Would definitely recommend Mirimar Cruises to anyone interested in visiting the Lone Pine Sanctuary.

The boat arrived on time at the library. Our captain was Michael and he was such a kind man. The ride up the river was beautiful. We took the 2:15 boat ride back. It was a larger boat with a full bar, snacks and lots of room. Staff was fabulous. Super friendly.

the crew and boat are great. They serve freshly prepared food which is great. The cost of the cruise is fair. I would do the cruise just to see the river seperately perhaps. Maybe they have a range of cruises to choose between but i recommend do not use them to see the Koala Sanctuary.
My dissapointment comes in that if you want to see the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary you will miss 1/2 the stuff there is to see at the Sanctuary by doing the cruise. It does not give you nearly enough time to see the Sanctuary. For example you miss the Tasmanian Devil feeding and presentation, you miss the Platypus feeding and talk. I could go on. We only did the cruise one way - up there and we still ran out of time and had to leave the park at closing without seeing everything and we rushed around in between presentations
so if you ONLY want to see a koala then yes take the cruise
if you want to see all the native australian animals there - then NO do not take the cruise or you will miss out
hope this helps

I have read many of the reviews accredited to the Mirimar II and it would be very hard to add anything more then what has been said about this fantastic day on the Brisbane River and our visit to the Lone Pine Sanctuary.

I am doing this review to help other passengers like ourselves who arrived in Brisbane by Cruise Ship and wanted to do something special on our own rather then take a formal Tour formulated by the Cruise Ship.....our biggest concern, since our group of 8 had never been to Brisbane before, was how do we get to the Mirimar II from the Cruise ship.

It was easy and enjoyable and this is how we did it.

The Mirimar website indicated that passengers could begin boarding the Mirimar II by 9:30 AM with Cast Off at 10:00 AM ...returning to the starting point around 3 PM. This was perfect for us as we had to be back on the ship no later the 5:30 PM.

Brisbane is not a Tender Port so there was not any difficulty getting off the ship as it was in Port by 8:00 AM. Although we could have taken a taxi for the 30 minute ride into the City Centre, our Cruise Ship made things much easier by operating a shuttle service that would drop us off on Creek St. just a little west of Queen St.....and Queen St. was where we had to be to make things work for us.

As we headed south on Queen St. we were pleasantly surprised to see that at the intersection of Edward St........ Queen St. turned into a non vehicular walking street with many shops along the way. The gals in our group stored this information for the eventual return walk that would take place shortly after 3 PM.

Our shuttle ride to the City Centre took 30 minutes, our walk south on Queen St. to the bridge crossing the Brisbane River took 20 minutes and 5 minutes later after crossing the bridge on the right side we were on the south bank of the river and at the gang plank to the Mirimar II....... paid our fare by Visa ( which included the entrance into the Lone Pine Sanctuary) and were comfortably seated up on the open deck in preparation for the 10: AM cast off.

With everything that has been stated about this Cruise upriver to the Sanctuary, I also want to point out how much we enjoyed looking at the endless number of beautiful homes that graced the shoreline.

The staff were great, the cost of the Cruise was very reasonable and we would not have any difficulty recommending it to any of our friends.

I hope that this information will help future Cruise passengers find their way to the south bank of the Brisbane River and the gang plank of the Mirimar II .....this made our day in Brisbane very enjoyable.

As a river cruise it was fine, educational, with friendly staff, and the ham/cheddar hot sandwich was good.

As a way to get to the koala sanctuary and hold a koala it was terrible. The boat leaves too late and returns too early to actually hold a koala. The sanctuary has 3 times of day to hold one, you line up and evidently they take the first 50 people. Even though we rushed to get in line first thing as soon as the boat docked, my husband and I were numbers 51 and 52. Just one person from the boat we were on made it, they were just in front of us. The boat departure time was before the next time slot. So, since my only reason for this tour was to hold a koala, it was EXTREMELY disappointing. This was midweek also, not a weekend or busier time.

The disclaimer they have about not guaranteeing being able to hold a koala is misleading. The way the schedule is set up, if you don't sprint and elbow people out of your way the chance is zero. My advice is either find a tour that leaves you more time at the sanctuary or take a bus to get there.

I am sorry you were disappointed that you were not able to hold a Koala, and because of feedback like this that people were giving directly to Lone Pine, they have now changed the way they do koala holds and no longer are doing the "50 ticket" system. They are now doing Koala holds all day from 10am. I know this information doesn't help your situation, I just thought I would share this information to anyone reading your review, that things have changed. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday in Brisbane. Kind regards Debbie

The boat trip (1.5 hrs one way) and Lone Pine was an amazing experience combo. Once at the sanctuary, you can pay ($25 AUD at the time) to get your picture hugging a koala, which is totally worth it. If that's not available, you can still get you picture next to a koala for free. You can also pick up a bag of kangaroo food to feed them but you can still pet them without the food as they are very docile. Also, don't miss the Flying Raptor show. Highly recommend!

I highly recommend this excursion to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, along with the very pleasant Brisbane River Cruise. We enjoyed it thoroughly. It was a lovely day and you don't get too many opportunities to hold or pet a koala. I loved how open it was. You could just wander around areas with kangaroos hopping along or relaxing under a tree and the koalas were basically just hanging around in various tree settings with their eucalyptus. They were mostly just chilling or sleeping. Apparently, they do that about 20 hours a day. In order to hold them, you need to get into line right away when you arrive from the boat and be prepared to stand in line for a while. It's $25 AUD for one person to hold a koala, though another person can be standing there and still be in the picture. No regrets, but it did take some time waiting in line, which did impact the amount of time we had at other exhibits. That's one reason why I gave this four starts instead of five--I would have liked an extra 30-60 minutes because of how long it took to get through the koala line.
The other thing to know is aimed at cruise passengers. We were on the Majestic Princess, which was docked at the Fisherman's Wharf area. It was no where near where you need to be to pick up the tour. It took us a full hour to take the shuttle ($25 round trip per person) to Anzac Sqaure in central Brisbane, and then it was a good 20 minutes to walk to the boat. We made it, but not with much time to spare, and we left the ship as soon as we could get off in the morning. You need to be on the first one or two shuttles off the pier, around 8:15 a.m., in order to ensure that you have time to reach the departure point, and once you return in the afternoon, you need to get quickly back to the shuttle point to get back to the ship on time. Your other option is a taxi, but it is expensive (well over $100) and we experienced pretty significant traffic.
We loved the experience, but be sure you've added in enough time for the travel to and from the Miramar boat near the museum.

Thanks for your detailed feedback and review. In regards to the cruise terminal, you will pleased to know that Brisbane is building a brand new terminal closer to the city to accommodate large cruise ships, so the travel time to the city should be a lot quicker. I am not sure when this terminal is due to open however I have heard some time in 2020. Kind regards Debbie
