Not really a beach you’d go to for a swim, although there were two people having a dip when we were there, Shorncliffe is more a place for a walk, or run, and a bbq.
We came down here to go for a walk along the foreshore after our lunch at the Post Office Bar and Grill. There were lots of people out and about enjoying there Saturday. The beach is now “off leash” for dogs, so there are A LOT of people with their dogs on the actual beach, so give this place a miss if you’re not a dog fan!
Lots of kite surfers which is cool to see as they look like huge and colourful insects flying around. The local Mr Whippy was up near the wharf, so no chance of going hungry either, and plenty of shaded barbecue areas too.
It’s an enjoyable space, with amenities located near the wharf.

What a great redevelopment... You must call in shady and cool for those warm summer days with a lovely little beach to paddle and splash about ... After the pier is completed this will be magnificent ... BBQs for free and ample picnic tables for a few or a crowd great spaces for all and clean ...modern ....clean ....clean ....bathrooms all good for those visiting

Easily accessible by Queensland Rail (Translink) suburban electric train to Shorncliff station then a seven minute walk (including an uphill section) to the beachside path, long pier or beach, the beach itself is quite small - perhaps 150 to 200 metres long.

The pier on one side and breakwater on the other delineate it.

It is in an attractive bushland setting. There are many shaded picnic tables, an excellent outdoor platground for children, toilets and barbeques. These are all the elements for a successful day out at the beach in Australia.

Well the rebuilt pier is open and it's great. Praise for the council who have organised a quality reconstruction instead of a removal as once was threatened. $20 million well spent I reckon. The decking is super and the many historical plaques set into the deck are fascinating.
Australians love a stroll to the end of a pier. There is a great sense of accomplishment in completing a walk like this I lived at Shorncliffe and Sandgate for 2 years and could finally take a long walk on a long pier and see the area from entirely new angles. It was fascinating to look along the row of stumps at the back of the old bathing area and I have added a photo of this.
There is a missed opportunity in not having a kiosk in the covered area 3/4 way along. Old-timers tell me there was one in years gone by.There were nostalgic stories of jigging school and playing the pinball machines while drinking a milk shake. And other of an old games of skill in the kiosk such as pennies falling the right way. It's not too late for that and surely the rent from the kiosk operator would help with ongoing maintenance. The only snacks and drinks providers are a fair way from the pier such as Cafe on the Park opposite Mona Park.
Add together the new pier, the great kids playground, the beach, promenade walk or cycle-way to Sandgate (and further), the picnic and BBQ areas and the rock wall and you have a wonderful attraction and area for families and kids.

The area is chock-a-block full of restored old Queenslander's; relaxing gardens; free BBQs; fish and chip eateries and has delightfull shallow water wading expanses for the "littleies" to get rid of all their energy. BUT !!! what ever happened to all those trillions upon trillions of Soldier Crabs that used to regimentally run around the beach on the dropping tide, bringing delight to all who witnessed the spectacle ????. Another of those disasters to our environment, that we humans have inflicted on our planet, I imagine ?. We have totally destroyed this huge colony of crabs. that has been around for thousands of years , just in the space of 20 years .
Nobody seems to care.

Basically, this beach is a wet-sand flat, as opposed to a golden sandy beach ........ more like a mud-flat really. AND it's really Sandgate Beach too! Shorncliffe Beach is a small beach to the right of the pier (as you look out to sea).

It's only good for walking on, for which it is superb! The place is used by the locals as their local dog-beach, and lots of dogs are to be found running around off-leash, however that is actually illegal here, it not being a bona-fide off leash area. Now and again, the local council have wardens fining dog walkers here, so be careful! However, it is a lovely beach for that purpose, and in typical fashion, the council are not "listening" to the people and refuse to designate it for that purpose.
The sea here is extremely shallow, good for a paddle as it is usually very calm. There is a great deal of kite-surfing going on here, because of the shallow sea and constant wind. Kite-surfing lessons can be taken here too.

The famous pier is being renewed, due to be finished early 2016. There are some benches to admire the view and a nice cafe overlooking the pier area.

There are lots of nice cafes, and a couple of fish & chip cafes too along the long promenade that is Sandgate, which is a joy to walk. there is also an open swimming pool (paid admission I think).

Overall ...... If it's a walk on the flat, wet hard beach or along the lovely promenade, fish & chips, a swim, or kite-surfing you're after, look no further than this area. If it's a golden soft sandy beach you're looking for, go elsewhere.

Good for what it's good for!

We actually visited Sandgate Beach but this site won't load this beach. A lovely beach with beautiful landscape and scenery. A gorgeous little village with everything you need as well as some gorgeous little shops to whet your appetite for trinkets to take home, e.g. Plum Design I think the cute little shop is called that grabbed me.

Shorncliffe caters beautifully for those who want to relax by the sea. Whilst you can't swim here, you can walk, jog, cycle, fish, walk along the beach at low tide, enjoy fish and chips or a picnic.. The list goes on! Come here for a beautiful day out.

We have been stopping here since 2001 on our way from Brisbane to Noosa. Lunch or Dinner at The Full Moon pub followed by a walk along Flinders Parade. Fabulous short break from driving via the Gateway as well as it is easy to get on and off the motorway.
