My Mum and I drove from Cooktown to Daintree via the Bloomfield Track in a Hertz Toyota Prado hire car. Checked the Cook and Douglas Shire websites for road information before we left Cooktown. The Bloomfield River has got a very high new bridge now so no trouble crossing it. Wouldn't recommend this drive during the wet season in a normal car or gutless small 4WD. The turbo diesel Prado handled it beautifully. Some sections are very steep, about 20-33 degree gradient. Also quite a few blind bends with room for only 1 vehicle. Hadn't rained for several days and the track was dry except for 2 very small damp spots . About 6 very low creek crossings with the final one before Cape Tribulation about 50 centimetres deep. Would not attempt this if it had rained recently or in the wet unless you are into serious 4 wheel driving, would be extremely slippery. Really beautiful scenery, lush rainforest, beautiful creeks and rivers including the new stone bridge, view of the Coral Sea. At the Daintree River our hire car company allows vehicles to go on the ferry so no trouble crossing there. Really great trip for an elderly mother and daughter having a girls own adventure!

Bloomfield track is such a lovely drive with several creek crossings, the biggest crossing is across the Bloomfield, however the bridge construction was in full throttle when we visited there in April this year. We crossed the river three times on our northern trip, twice during the day and one night crossing without any trouble.

Recently drove Cooktown to cairns via the Bloomfield track.... really nice day, allow 5 hours and make sure you stop along the way... a 4WD is recommended

Coming down from Cooktown, where the new bridge crosses the river a short drive upstream gets you to the Waterfall. Absolutely spectacular 40m fall, and that was in the dry season. Then down the Bloomfield to Cape Trib road. Not a difficult drive but some steep spots would be slippery in the wet. The steep bits are concreted otherwise would be close to impassable. Great rainforest drive. Stop at the beach on this track rather than at Cape Trib since it is just as scenic and you get it all to yourself. The last creek crossing is probably all that stops 2wd cars from coming up this way from Cape Trib and the place being overrun by tourists.
