Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We passed this airstrip on the way home to Darwin. I saw the signs as we were driving but was knocked back a little when we saw some ímitation' planes on the runway. It took my mind into the situation Australia was in way back in WWII. There was another airplane strip a bit further north. They both still look like they are suitable for landing.

As part of Australia's struggle during the war years the last remaining features of those battles are slowly disappearing. This small reminder is one of several old airstrips that still border the highway out of Darwin and are signposted to alert the traveller. These airstrips where thrown together in short time to assist in the defence of Darwin and to stop , eventually the Japanese domination of the air. This old strip has history boards & dummy examples of the planes that defended Darwin & Australia and is worth a stop and a reminder of those dark days in our history .

It took our 3rd drive past before my Mate agreed to pull in & have a look ! As a past visitor (2014) I knew what to expect but pleasantly found the history boards have been updated for the 75th anniversary. He was very impressed and glad we finally stopped and it is still a great & easy reminder of our fighting past & the WW2 history in the Top End !!

it is lovely to be able to see an old wwii airstrip and be able to have information just sitting there about, the airfield itself, the role it had during the darwin bombing, and other airfields in the area.

The Strauss Airstrip was used from 1942 to 1945. It’s was a strategic part of the allied defence of northern Australia at the time. Is is just off the Stuart Highway.

Yes you are seeing right, there are WWII planes parked on the runway! Not real ones, cut-outs, however the placques and the history of this particular airfield are easy to read and access. Worth stopping for and having your photo taken beside the planes.

We were driving past when I spotted what I thought was a ww2 aeroplane by the side of the road; but as we got closer it was a couple of life size 'cardboard' cut outs. They are there depicting an old WW2 runway, a strange but effective way of doing it I suppose.

2 dimensional aircraft stuck up by the side of the highway but at least there's something there as almost all the other "airfields" have nothing at all.

On the side of the Stuart Highway as you head into Darwin, this memorial to the World War 2 Top End airfields is nicely done. The aircraft representations and the historical information explains the part they played. Well worth the stop to explore.

A good place to stretch the legs after a long drive from Katherine etc and enjoy wondering around a reading about the history of the planes and the war.Not far from Palmerston.
