Cobourg Fishing Safaris is located in an beautiful waterside location. The permanent tents are well appointed, the meals are sensational, and the fishing is incredible. Plenty of opportunity to catch that fish of a lifetime. A mixture of fishing in the creeks and around the mangroves and in the open blue water, provided me with great catches throughout my 6 day stay. The staff are very obliging, and very knowledgeable. Travis is a great camp host and as a guide and skipper, put me "on the fish" time and time again. I thoroughly recommend Cobourg Fishing Safaris to anyone who loves fishing and just enjoys being out there!

Firstly, seems unfair that Cobourg Fishing Safaris is grouped in with other fishing trips including day excersions.
My partner (refered to as +1) and I were at camp for 5 nights (Sunday through Friday) and for me, the whole trip was a wonderful surprise. I was the only female at camp for the 5 nights and that was a concern at first but I actually felt comfortable and welcome. We were in a group of 5 (part of the group from Rhino Rack) and it was just us and the staff (Mike, Dave, Jason, Travis and Nick) in camp forthe first 2 nights then we were joined by 3 brothers for Tues, Wed and Thursday nights.
Each day was a leisurely start, about 7.30- 8am after breakfast prepared by Chef Jason and thenit was out into Port Essington for the fishing. Mike was the guide for +1 and I, and he was great... obviously loves fishing and having a chat about just about any topic. The 3 of us got along very well. Mike was even understanding when I asked to be taken back to camp to use the amenities.
My first fish was a 16 pound cod and then we were catching Barra and all sorts of other wonderful fish, so many I cannot remember them all. Over the 5 days, +1 and I also caught rays, crabs (on a fishing line) Queen fish, small sharks, thread fin salmon, tuna and even a barracuda (I didn't know that was a real fish, but it is and it's an angryone at that). We released lots of other fish as they weren't of size or not good eating fish.

Mike took +1 and I to Victoria Settlement (another review on here discusses this place). It was very interesting to visit, to stop and think about the poor soldiers, their wives and the convicts sent there and the conditions they endured. I knew nothing about that colony before visiting but Mike was a great guide and spoke enthusiastically about the ruins, and back at camp, gave me a book to read more about the settlement.
On route to the airstrip to leave, we stopped at the cultural centre Algarlarlgarl (in Garig Gunak Barlu National park) which is maintained by the local rangers. We met one of the rangers (Dillon) the day we arrived and he was great explaining his family and their relationship with country.

I was suprised how much I enjoyed the trip. It was hot and hard work at times but the rewards are worth the effort. The tents are good and though somewhat more 'basic' than I am used to, serve their purpose well.
I highly recommend going to CFS if you have the opportunity, even if you're not an overly keen 'fisher person'.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us this review and for the great photos! This was a fantastic trip, and we are so pleased to hear how much you enjoyed it. We will make sure this gets back to the camp crew. As well as the excellent fishing, Garig Gunak Barlu has much to offer. It sounds like you had the complete experience. We'd love to show you more if you are ever in the Top End again! All the best - Cobourg Fishing Safaris

Early one Saturday morning I set off to fly with Frontier Air to Port Essington to visit the ruins of the early settlement called Victoria. Victoria only lasted from 1838 until 1949. The tragedy was the loss of so many young lives. At Coburg Fishing Safars Camp we were warmly welcomed by the staff. Our guide, a man with an extensive knowledge of both the history of Victoria as well as the Makassan men who had fished for Trepang along this beautiful piece of Australian coastline. Three or four attempts were made by the British Government to develop a settlement in the North of Australia that, this was to be similar to Singapore.

We reached Victoria after a wonderful boat trip along am absolutely beautiful scenery long white beaches and vibrant red cliffs it was magical, this alone was a great experience, this part of the trip lasting about 30 mins.

We started our tour of the Victoria ruins at the cemetery which was rather a sombre experience thinking about those young people who lay in those isolated graves and the families who were left to grieve. One cannot help but think that the British Government of the time did not look after the people who went out to Victoria very well.

We saw the ruins of the quartermaster stores, blacksmith shop, baker shop, a kiln for the production of lime and for making bricks, the hospital ruins, the officer’s quarters which amused me greatly they were built in true British style with an open fire place (which must have been used for cooking, certainly no heating was needed in Victoria) we also saw a powder magazine which was beautifully built and still intact found the symmetry was amazing, the remains of the officers ness were very tiny and interestingly the remains of champagne and schnapps bottles could still be found. It was clear the buildings were the work of expert craftsmen.

There was much evidence of the Makassan men who fished for trepang and planted Tamarind trees which were grown to mark the place where fresh water could be found, the trees were clearly visible from the water.

Visiting Victoria was a wonderful experience, the guide was very informative and very patient, the pilot was a delight – he carried my back pack and took heaps of photographs for me I cannot thank both of these people enough. They really made my day even more wonderful.

A well thought out and varied fishing itinerary . Being my second trip here, I was impressed and this time with the creek fishing.
Jason should be running a "one hat" retaurant ! He has now mastered the Banana Barra recipe..... make sure you demand this when you travel there. Well done guys.
