- Lorrie BAustin, Texas26 contributionsTour Group Visits School of the AirThis was a scheduled stop on our tour. I am so glad we visited. We were welcomed by a former student, who did a fantastic job of informing us about what a school day was (is) like for students there. We were also fortunate to visit when a local author & former student was there. As a teacher myself, I found it very interesting that these students and their teachers had been doing for years, what distance education resembled for my students during the pandemic (and we were all scrambling to set up!). I really want to emphasize that even if you're not involved in the field of education, this place will most likely be interesting to you. No trip to Alice Springs would be complete without a stop here! You really get an idea of what it is like to live there!Thank you for your kind review. We are glad that you found our system of education so interesting and enjoyed meeting one of our former students.Written 22 January 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2022Written 22 January 2023

This "classroom" covers more than 1.3 million square kilometers! Fascinating to see what goes into providing an education for the children of the outback.

Thank you for your kind review. Our students are incredibly remote, so we need to go to great lengths to ensure that they get an education comparable to the more accessible students.

This place is origin of first online school prototype, esp., it’s obvious in COVID19 pandemics. Traced back to the years just after WWII, the school of the air originated in delivery of education to kids in need in remote area of Australia; by using many techniques and technology to ensure the students to get knowledge as those in normal school system, there is a tour for briefing about concept, the real broadcast classroom.

As a retired teacher, I loved seeing how this facility reaches out to teach students and their tutors in such remote places. Congratulations on your hard work. The tour was excellent and definitely a must see in Alice for teachers, parents and children.

The development of this service from 1951 when pedal radio provided the energy to the use of satellites today was very interesting. I bought a trilogy of books written by one of the early students was a good read highlighting the importance of education to the remote students.

Fantastic talk at start to bring this to life. Interesting to hear about the service and experience. This really did provide the platform for e/learning globally. Loved the opportunity to buy library books at the end.

Hello and thank you so much for your response. We have plenty of merchandise in our store, but for those who don't have the bag room but want to contribute to our student's learning, choosing a library book from our school selection to donate is so much appreciated! Thank you for your contribution!

Are there any lessons on Saturdays during the tour or would it be better to come on a Friday afternoon by myself?

Lessons Monday to Friday only whilst we were there from memory, but I would certainly check to see if this changes as according to staff working there, this place is becoming more popular, and they may have to put on extra times..
