About
The Women's Museum of Australia (formerly known as the National Pioneer Women's Hall of Fame) is dedicated to celebrating the contribution of women in the pioneering history of the Northern Territory. More broadly, the Women's Museum of Australia is exhibiting stories which showcase the special contribution to Australia's heritage that women in many endeavours have made, not only for the benefit of their communities, but as lasting legacies that can inspire future generations. The Women's Museum of Australia is situated in the heritage-listed Old Gaol; so you can also explore prison life and learn about the history of incarceration as well as getting a hands-on feeling for what life inside the cells was like for prisoners of the day.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This tourist attraction competes with many of the fabulous and famous locations such as Standley Chasm, Simpson Gap, the Telegraph Station and cafe, The Residency, Harley Street School, School of the Air and the Royal Flying Doctor Service tourist facility and Base Cafe. While interesting to some, it is simply not in the same league as the others.

Visited here this afternoon and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was the lady at the counter was very friendly and only happy to help us. The museum is very informative and worth spending time in it mentioned a lot of history I was unaware of. A couple cells in the men's jail gave me chills. But it certainly was worth taking the time to visit.

Hi Jill, thank-you so much for your review. We are glad that you enjoyed your time here and consider it worth a stop when visiting Alice Springs. I am also happy to hear that the person who helped you at the counter was friendly. We are predominantly run by volunteers, who are all very passionate and dedicated, so we love to read positive reviews about our volunteers in the shop.

We discovered this by accident ~ what a treasure trove of history and personal experiences. An eye-opener on Australia's women pioneers as well as life in gaol ~

The womens museum was very informative, and well worth a visit. If you go you can tie it in with a trip with the reptile centre across the road.
I was very surprised with the information on the pioneering women, and the other women who were firsts in their fields.
This information is not well know and was an eye opener.
I enjoyed it. Wasn’t overly expensive .
The Gaol was basically in the same complex, so you have a look. While it is appreciated, the efforts to find attractions in Alice, the gaol is basically rubbish. The museum is excellent!

We are thrilled you enjoyed the women's museum component of the museum and we are sorry that the gaol part didn't meet expectations. We would love if you could provide some more information on why you consider the gaol to be so poor, as it might helps us improve.

We had an extra day in town and decided to walk over and check this out. These people have done an amazing job of capturing and collecting information, pictures and artifacts to depict the evolution of the lives of women in Australia. They used the site of the old prison as a facility, and have several different and interesting display areas throughout the site. For a nominal fee you get an enlightening self-guided experience. Well worth the stop in my opinion.

What a terrific place ! We didn’t realise how interesting this museum would be. So much to see and learn. Our pioneer women were so tough and so capable. We loved it here. There is a gift shop and toilets and cold drinks for sale.

Fantastic exhibitions, interactive and presented in multiple platforms - visible, written, audio, touch, etc. Provided detailed insight into Alice springs then and now. I was only there for an hour but would allow 2-3 hours. Shame I couldn’t stay longer because I really enjoyed it. A must visit in my opinion!
