About
The Women's Museum of Australia (formerly known as the National Pioneer Women's Hall of Fame) is dedicated to celebrating the contribution of women in the pioneering history of the Northern Territory. More broadly, the Women's Museum of Australia is exhibiting stories which showcase the special contribution to Australia's heritage that women in many endeavours have made, not only for the benefit of their communities, but as lasting legacies that can inspire future generations. The Women's Museum of Australia is situated in the heritage-listed Old Gaol; so you can also explore prison life and learn about the history of incarceration as well as getting a hands-on feeling for what life inside the cells was like for prisoners of the day.

Certainly an interesting place to visit and admission price reasonable at $11 per person for "Seniors". Plenty of stories to listen to and absorb, and all were interesting insights into prison life narrated by staff and prisoners. The venue also highlights the historical achievement of women in Australia and pleased that we chose to visit.

We had an extra day in town and decided to walk over and check this out. These people have done an amazing job of capturing and collecting information, pictures and artifacts to depict the evolution of the lives of women in Australia. They used the site of the old prison as a facility, and have several different and interesting display areas throughout the site. For a nominal fee you get an enlightening self-guided experience. Well worth the stop in my opinion.

What a wonderful surprise this museum was! There is no other that has this focus, thanks to its founder, Molly Clark. All extensive collections are exhibited in a professional and beautifully presented manner. They really do justice to celebrating the role of women in Australian history; women from all sectors and walks of life.
The museum is located in the Old Alice Springs Gaol, itself interesting.
We ran out of time there - they needed to close. So worth the visit.

I was so glad I took the time to see this Museum as it gave you a really good idea of just how much women have contributed to Australian life - something we all need to be more aware of. It is essentially run by volunteers and has been well thought out. There were a number of interesting historical exhibits. The Old Gaol was also very interesting with recorded information on the previous prisoners when you entered each cell.

I was very surprised to find such an interesting museum about women from all occupations and professions in Alice Springs. I had thought it would only be about outback women. I was very impressed. It was also interesting to wander around the old goal and hear the stories of some of the inmates

We had a wonderful time and not enough time! The stories of women who demonstrated perseverance & grit was topped off by moving audio stories from the Gaol (both men and women’s cells provided moving insights into this strata of AS history). The chance to support current inmates by purchasing their art topped off a really interesting visit. Many thanks to the volunteers who keep this piece of history alive.

We found this whole museum very interesting and well laid out. The section on the Ordinary Women with Extraordinary Lives was well worth a walk through. Also enjoyed walking through the old gaol, sitting down inside the cells and listening to stories told by inmates or guards. Good experience.

The womens museum was very informative, and well worth a visit. If you go you can tie it in with a trip with the reptile centre across the road.
I was very surprised with the information on the pioneering women, and the other women who were firsts in their fields.

This information is not well know and was an eye opener.

I enjoyed it. Wasn’t overly expensive .

The Gaol was basically in the same complex, so you have a look. While it is appreciated, the efforts to find attractions in Alice, the gaol is basically rubbish. The museum is excellent!

We are thrilled you enjoyed the women's museum component of the museum and we are sorry that the gaol part didn't meet expectations. We would love if you could provide some more information on why you consider the gaol to be so poor, as it might helps us improve.

This was so well done and definitely worth a visit. Allow a couple of hours to be able to read all the information that is there. I stand in awe of the pioneering women and Australian women in general. The gaol was also a sobering visit.

Fantastic exhibitions, interactive and presented in multiple platforms - visible, written, audio, touch, etc. Provided detailed insight into Alice springs then and now. I was only there for an hour but would allow 2-3 hours. Shame I couldn’t stay longer because I really enjoyed it. A must visit in my opinion!
