The National Pioneer Women's Hall of Fame is one of two women's museums in Australia. It is dedicated to preserving the place of women in history for their special contribution to Australia's heritage and tells their stories through photographs, artifacts, audio, video and other memorabilia. The museum is based in the heritage-listed Old Alice Springs Gaol, and visitors can also explore the old gaol cells and learn about its history and stories.

Well set-out and informative displays in the Women's Hall of Fame. Staffed by volunteers. We enjoyed the history about the long-serving prison matron and her efforts to improve life for the female prisoners. Nice little gift shop as well.

Thanks so much. I agree that Telka, the Prison Matron's, tale about improving life for the female prisoners is one of the best stories of the Gaol. And isn't our little shop great?? :-)

I found the prison part of the museum a bit disturbing but loved the exhibits in the middle and greatly appreciated that money from their souvenirs goes toward rehabilitating prisoners. It's the only museum of its kind in all of Australia and one of only...More

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Yes, some of the stories of the Gaol (most gaols, in fact) are a little disturbing and thought-provoking for sure. I am very glad you enjoyed the Women's Hall Of Fame exhibits though.

Very interesting & was great to see that the pioneer women have been recognized in this fashion. The goal was eerie at times but was good to see how prisoners lived. The stories of the Aborginal prisioners was heart wrenching. Was nice to see that...More

After doing a number of small tours we decided to visit the Hall of Fame. Located in the old gaol it was not open when we attended on the weekend. Maybe next time.

I am shocked to hear this. I am so sorry! Our museum is run by volunteers and I was not aware that it wasn't open as advertised. Please contact me at operations@pioneerwomen.com.au to let me know what day and time you visited.

Loads of interesting facts on leading women in the Territory are showcased here. With the extra whow factor of being held in the old Alice Springs goal, you can help escape that feeling oooh.

We're glad you enjoyed your visit. It certainly is unique to have a women's history museum in a gaol, isn't it?
