The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Central Business District
The Sydney Central Business District is abuzz with energy. Power brokers run to and from high rise buildings and after-work drink places, high-end shoppers tour venues like the QVB, and fine diners frequent the many celebrity chef restaurants. For a dose of culture, walk to the NSW Art Gallery, or visit the Sydney Museum. To escape the hustle and bustle, reconnect with nature at the Sydney Botanical Gardens or picnic lunch at High Park. No matter your interest, be sure to check the full calendar of events hosted by the city, from the Sydney Festival in January to October’s Good Food Month at Hyde Park.

Comprehensive history selection
Feb. 2021
We love this store and it has an amazing selection of books, especially in the history section. It is very busy so hard to physically distance.

Love bookshops!
Nov. 2019
Kinokuniya, the Japanese bookshop chain is ideally located opposite QVB in Sydney. It is more than a bookshop - the selection of books is immense, plus there are a lot of gift ideas. A sanctuary to rest & learn. Staff are helpful.
In the cafe, I went for the much heard of watermelon cake - it looked beautiful garnished with thinly sliced lychees plus colourful flowers. A refreshing cake but I wonder how it retains it's freshness by the end of the day. Cake & chai for about $14.00 was somewhat on the rich side plus I would have liked the cafe to serve some savouries for a light lunch.
There are other japanese shops around such as Muji.
Kinokuniya is a must visit for book lovers and anyone shopping for unusual gifts.

Glad we still have book stores
Jul. 2019
Book stores to many is a thing of the past. To me, it's a little sanctuary where I can escape the rigors of life. I used to frequent book stores on a weekly basis but it's so difficult to find a book store in today's day and age. I've didn't realize book stores still existed until I came across this place hidden in the top of the galleries. They have such an enormous collection of books both English and other languages + if you're into comics, there is a large collection of Japanese and US comics to choose from. I was in a rush so only spent 1/2 an hour here, but will definitely come back soon to enjoy the vast collection of books. Don't let the books disappear.

Largest Bookstore Chain In Japan-A Good Store In Sydney
Feb. 2019 • Couples
The Sydney store is not unlike its Japan counterparts although smaller but still with an extensive range of books in Japanese ,English and other languages. It started out as a timber and charcoal dealer in Yotsuya (near Shinjuku) and after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 moved to Shinjuku (Tokyo) and became a book store. The major stores in Tokyo are usually over multiple floors with just about every book published in Japan and quite a few in English. This visit was to seek out a specific book and it was in stock.Kinokuniya has over 80 stores world-wide and is proff that books stores still exist.

Amazing! I can spend a whole day here!
Nov. 2018 • Family
Huge bookstore on the top level of the Galeries Shopping Centre in Sydney CBD. Impressive collection of English and Japanese books, manga and magazines. They also have a large collection of art and design books, as well as Japanese stationery, collectible toys and merchandise. It’s heaven for me, especially since we don’t have anything like this in Toronto (well, Chapters/Indigo have very different products than Kinokuniya). I found the store to be well organized and neat - easy to walk around and look for items.

Book-lovers, don’t miss this place when you visit Sydney!

Also, Black Star Pastry, with the famous Watermelon Cake, is located inside the bookstore.

Book lovers heaven
Jan. 2019 • Couples
I absolutely love this book shop. It’s really well laid out and very easy to find what you’re looking for or discover something new.

There’s lots of places to sit and explore books and it also has an attached cafe and stationary section.

The graphic novel section is massive and I could spend hours in this shop.

Japanese lover haven!
Nov. 2018 • Friends
Get many of your Japanese books and paraphernalia here! They even have a JTC Tour agency in the bookstore, should you wish to book any tours to Japan.
Awesome atmosphere, and many great gifts to pick out for the various seasons.
Easily accessible in town: the nearest station is Town Hall.
Overall, a lovely place to visit, esp when the weather is too hot in summer, and vice versa for winter!

A Cornucopia of literature
Oct. 2018 • Solo
This Sydney branch of Kinokuniya bookshops is far better laid out than the Singapore shop. Whereas I found the Singapore store confusing and not book location friendly (despite assistants to guide you) the Sydney shop I found extremely easy to navigate.

The range of books was greater than Dymocks, Sydney. Also that the prices asked were significantly cheaper than Whitcoulls NZ - as I discovered by going to Whitcoulls on-line. This despite the variation in exchange rates !! Also I noted that the range of Manga and similar comics was especially well catered for.

This bookshop is outstanding and if you are looking for a particular genre - the place to go.
