The Sydney Central Business District is abuzz with energy. Power brokers run to and from high rise buildings and after-work drink places, high-end shoppers tour venues like the QVB, and fine diners frequent the many celebrity chef restaurants. For a dose of culture, walk to the NSW Art Gallery, or visit the Sydney Museum. To escape the hustle and bustle, reconnect with nature at the Sydney Botanical Gardens or picnic lunch at High Park. No matter your interest, be sure to check the full calendar of events hosted by the city, from the Sydney Festival in January to October’s Good Food Month at Hyde Park.

An old style theatre that has been frozen in time. The heritage value of the theatre was identified many years ago and through numerous renovations the pure beauty of the State Theatre has shone through. Great for a show or a coffee in the attached coffee shop

The State Theatre opened in June 1929. Four months later, Wall St crashed and Great Depression began. Since then, good times and bad, the State Theatre has prospered, on a program of cinema, theatre and music. The Heritage-listed theatre has a number of decorative styles, predominantly Modern Gothic and Art Deco. The theatre is situated in the Sydney CBD, it hosts the prominent Sydney Film Festival in June.

We have been coming to this theatre for years. We stopped recently due to covid. We just can’t wait to start getting back into theatre going once covid has dissapeared.

This is a very lavish theatre and was built in 1929. It has a Gothic foyer with a vaulted ceiling and mosiac floor.

Has great shows, and is a wonderful experience, its just if your a traveller is a main stream theatre what you are after? This said, Im a local and I love seeing shows in this old style theatre. I guess the question is do I review for a traveller or for a local. For a locals its a 4 star

Lovely architecture in a central location.
There are no ‘bad’ seats at the State Theatre.
Staff are fabulous.

I have been to this theatre many times over the years and I always get a thrill out of arriving at the Art Nouveau foyer and finding my seat in the splendour of the auditorium. As the stage area is limited compared to larger newer theatres, the shows here now tend to be for smaller productions or solo performers. Often shows are only on for a few days so be quick if you see something you want to see.
