Neighbourhood: Surry Hills
Once regarded as the traditional fashion area, Surry Hills has broadened its appeal. This neighbourhood continues to distinguish itself as a shopping destination, offering the best collection of one-of-a-kind boutiques, designer brands and flagship stores in the city. Today, this area has evolved into a hub of media, design and professional services - a colourful and diverse place equally known for its antique dealers, art galleries, cafes and pubs. Strolling down the street on a Saturday morning, you’ll see a mix of students, artists, hipsters and a few all-nighters from Oxford Street, the “Gay Capital of Sydney”. In this vibrant neighbourhood you will find bohemian chic and modern style co-existing side by side.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Comfy seats, chatty staff… all in all a great cinema experience.
We watched Anatomy of a Fall ( highly recommended) and had cuppas and cake before the showing.
But the cinema is on the brink of being redeveloped, with a new cinema in the basement, so it’s moving south in the city for a couple of years. Four screens until the end of Feb 2024.

Cinema experience good. But this used to be in a bustling coffee culture. Now this eastern end of Oxford Street is practically derelict. More empty shop fronts than anything else. Also heard that another favourite cinema is closing at the end of this month. Dendy Opera Quay. Pity that the art house places are disappointed.

I can literally repeat what I wrote 2 September 2018:
Great seats, with seat reservation, excellent sound and video quality. I do have a membership for a reason. Go there regularly. And I really like that you can take drinks into the theatre although prices have increased quite a bit. But ... when you have long lines downstairs you really should open both drink counters (on the first and the second floor). Really, trust me.

We go there quite often. Great seats, now seat reservation, excellent sound and video quality. And I really like that you can take drinks into the theatre. But ... when you have four movies starting at 20:30, 20:40, 20:50, and 21:00, you really should a) have both drink counters open (one the first and the second floor) and b) more than one person working the counter on the first floor.
I finally gave up trying to get drinks because it was clear that I would miss major parts of the show with more than 20 people still queuing in front of me. It's not the first time that this has happened, and it just really is annoying.

Palace Norton St is our regular but its being renovated. Went to Verona because we had a free ticket voucher and needed to use it (members) however no clear redemption option when booking online. Bought tickets and thought we'd adjust while there but was told that this as not possible, end of story, bad luck, short and sharp.
Got rushed through counter, picked up some coffee and went to our seats. Lots of litter around, no drink holders, relatively narrow. Not impressive.
Happy with Norton St and would have gone if we could but don't judge Palace by this property or its staff.

There's mainstream cinemas in fox studios, bindi junction and the city but if you want something better this is it. You can get a glass of wine cheese and sit and enjoy a movie that is a cut above the usual Hollywood fare. You can also have a glass of wine next door at Berkelouw bookshop which has a lovely cafe on the top floor. Plus you can walk after to Messina in darlinghurst and have a delicious ice cream - that is a pretty good night!

If you have a dustmite allergy, you should probably take your Claratyne (antihistamine) before you get there. Inside the actual auditorium where the films are screened, the air is thick with the smell of seat upholstery and carpets that have not been cleaned in seemingly decades. It made our eyes water and our nose run. The fabric on all of the chairs is grotty. If cleaning the seats and the carpet is not in their budget, maybe they could do some fundraising?
We went there at night and struggled to breathe throughout the duration of the film, amidst the overpowering smell. We had to shower as soon as we got home and all of our clothes had to be drycleaned the next day. We would not go there again due to our allergic reaction to the smell.
If you don't mind sitting on dirty seats and inhaling musty air, this is the place for you.
The lobby has a quaint charm but looks tired and in need of a freshen up, especially the carpets and seats. Not worth a long drive.
The customer service was really great and the food on the limited menu was very nice. Gluten-free options are available and the strawberry choc top is to die for. Don't forget to take your Lacteeze (lactase enzyme tablets) with you, if you are lactose-intolerant, as it is difficult to stop at just one (even though they are enormous).
If you don't mind a little serotonin reduction, the popcorn is moreish as it is cooked with olive oil and tastes much better than popcorn at other cinemas that is cooked with Martian chemicals.
Putting the current menu on the website would be helpful so customers can plan/book ahead elsewhere for a full meal before/after the film, versus just drinks, confectionery, sandwiches, quiche, cakes and popcorn at the bar.

Wow fantastic retro decor and building, hand made choc tops my son had the white chocolate top with cookies and I had the strawberry choc top. I can honestly say it took me almost half an hour to consume. You wont need dinner !
This cinema is a hidden gem it took us a while to find it as it does not look like a cinema from the outside more like an old court house , anyway the manager told us that it was a significant historical building in Paddington NSW that had been refurbished. I think you can have parties there as it has a great ambiance. I am so glad we didn't give up in finding this cinema just remember to get a cab and let them take you to 249 Oxford, and see Bird Man while its still on.
