Top ways to experience Manly Beach
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Manly
A 40-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay will take you to the famous northern beach of Manly. The beaches here are perfect for learning to surf or spending the day sun-tanning. The walk from Spit Bridge to Manly is a great way to experience Sydney Harbour Bay and the Australian bush land. Along the foreshore, there are plenty of watering holes and wine bars with excellent cuisine. There are plenty of kid-friendly restaurants as well, especially along the family-oriented areas like Shelly Beach. An excellent way to experience Manly is to rent a bike and explore the dedicated bike paths and off road trails. The North Head National Park is another must-see. Located on the southern tip of Manly, North Head National Park offers great bushwalks and panoramic views of the city.

- WLH_OzBrisbane, Australia892 contributionsManly North Head Sanctuary HikeHaving been to Sydney many times before, I thought it was time I ventured out of the CBD this time and so I visited Manly. I’m not that much of a beachgoer, so it was great there were hiking trails available that I could do on my day trip there. Getting to Manly was incredibly easy; the Manly Ferry from Circular Quay is quite regular with the ride taking about 30min and costs less than $10 one-way on the Opal Card (and you don’t need to touch off at Manly). Note, there is also the Manly Fast Ferry which I believe is a bit more expensive and I don’t think the ride to Manly is that much faster than the normal ferry. There are toilets onboard the ferry, otherwise there is one at Manly Wharf. Head towards the wharf exit and then on your right side look for a sign that says “Carpark Toilets”. You can take the lift down but the stairs are faster. The toilets are cleanish a bit like those I would expect at the beach. If you’re along The Corso shops (the main shopping area in Manly) there is also another set of toilets opposite the Fishmongers Manly restaurant. I started off at The Corso and made my way down to Manly Beach, going clockwise. Many stops were made during my almost 3hr hike including Cabbage Tree Bay, Shelly Beach, then following the Shelly Beach to Barracks Precinct Walk path, visited City Lookouts, Third Quarantine Cemetery, North Fort, Memorial Walk, and unfortunately North Head was closed during my visit early December even though the signage said construction until November. Arriving at Q Station, I followed Scenic Drive which becomes Darley Road and walked all the way back to The Corso. Overall, it was enjoyable hike, got to see a different Sydney but remember to bring sunscreen, hat and water. =TIPS= • There are 2 ferries that go to Manly – one normal, cheaper and the other is the Manly Fast Ferry which is slightly more expensive and I think maybe 5 or 10 minutes faster than the normal ferry. • There are signs throughout the hike but why not drop by the Information Centre just outside the Manly Wharf to have a chat to staff to find out more and also grab a map to see where you’re going? • A short while after Shelly’s Beach, if you keep hiking up, you’ll come across a little gate with a sign that says no dogs. This is the gate you can go through to continue your hike. The guy at the Information Centre told me people are hesitant going through the gate but it’s open.Hi WLZ_Oz, Thank you very much for taking the time to write for your lovely detailed review. Very pleasant 15-20 minutes journey especially to watch Sydney's skyline from the distance. Once in Manly, you discover a small village plenty of shops, restaurants, etc... and a magnificent beach to stay quite longer. Highly recommendableHi Antoni S Thank you for your positive review about Manly. We're so pleased you enjoyed our beautiful beach and also the ferry trip - it's one of the most stunning in the world and such an easy trip from Sydney's CBD. - Realistic TravellersNorthampton, United Kingdom589 contributionsBeautiful Beach that was very quiet on our visitManly breach is a beautiful beach. There is plenty of space. You can hire a beach chair or lounge or even a towel if you forgot one. There are plenty of benches and some tables set back from the beach so you can enjoy a sand-free beautiful view if required. The fish and chips across the road was great for this. We took the afternoon ferry direct from Circular Quay (about 30mins) and went back later in the evening all very easy.Hi Realistic_travellers With a wide walkway along the entire length of Manly Beach and around to Shelly Beach, there is plenty of space for casual ocean- and people-watching, as well as ample opportunity for sand-free beachside days and dining. If you'd prefer table service with your meal, there are many restaurants and cafes along the beachfront that afford great ocean views. Thanks for visiting and sharing your thoughts. Paid $59 for 3 hours of parking when we took the ferry into Sydney. We had an OK time but we found Bondi beach the next day to be less crowded and less commercial. If you can only visit one, my vote is with Bondi. Oh, and don’t park near the ferry wharf at Manly if you don’t want to get ripped off for $59.Hi MitchFindlay, Thank you for your review. We took ferry from Circular Quay, one way ticket is AUD 10. The ride is about 20min. Its very scenic and comfortable journey and you are passing the Opera house so also great views. In Manly station there is an information center with super friendly staff who will explain anything you need. Its also easy to find your own way to Manly beach. We walked to Manly Wormhole which is about 20min walk one way. Its a small cave at the end of the beach with stunning views and peace vibes. The beach is great for surfing or other sports activities.

Very good swimming and surfing and very safe with soft sand and life guards. Nice shops nearby. The water is warmish and so clean you can nearly drink it.

Hi Birdflip
Thank you for your review. We're so pleased you enjoyed Manly Beach.
Thanks for pointing out the lifeguards - it's really important for visitors to know that we have a large contingent of these skilled surf technicians who ensure all beachgoers are safe and can fully enjoy their time in the water.
Manly Beach actually has three surf clubs along its length - Manly, North Steyne and Queenscliff.

Fast-ferry to Manly, pedestriansed The Corso, little boutiques, cloudless blue sky - fab. Manly wharf through the town to the oceanside - gelati, giant Christmas tree, water-fountains – cool. The Steyne pub/hotel still there, offers iconic awesome views of Manly beach. We haven't visited Sydney for many years. Stunning beach, met friends for lunch - our trip to Manly was fantastic. (I have gait/walking challenges (stroke), wear a legbrace.)

Hi jacquitohc
How great to welcome you back to Manly and for the village to turn on such a great display.
It's a beautiful place to meet for lunch with so many options, from casual dining and pub meals to fine dining; ocean views versus harbor views; from fish and chips and pizza through to high-end fine dining.
We hope you don't wait too long to come and visit again.
Thank you

One of the best beaches in the world, hands down. Very clean and a great place for kids as there are lots of parks and playgrounds behind the beach. The waves were good when we were there and we enjoyed walking along the corridor.

After catching the Manly ferry from Circular Quay it took 20 minutes to get to Manly beach. It's a beautiful area. Countless shops, restaurants, fast food outlets, Gift shops and shops of all types are everywhere. On the day we visited there was a street Market with many lovely items to choose from. The beach itself is wonderful. There is also a trail where people can walk along the shore and enjoy panoramic views.

Manly is a beautiful city with a lot to do. For example, you have to do the spit bridge to manly walk. It’s wonderful and you will discover beautiful places… My favorite was Delwood beach.

We took the Manly Ferry from Circular Quay for a 30 minute trip through the harbor to Manly Beach. When we arrived, we stopped by the information station, where we got very helpful suggestions and directions, including the best places to snorkel. A short walk across the island took us to the beach. We looked for umbrellas or chairs for rent, but did not see any. There was about 1 - 2 meter surf and many surfers. We walked some more to Shelly Beach for snorkeling. There was a little surge and visibility was 2-3 meters. Water was about 18 Celsius, so we wore wetsuits. We saw many fish including blue groupers, wrasses and several other types. There is an ID board at the beach for the different species. There is not much shade but a few places to sit or picnic. A rinsing area is near the path back to Manly Beach. We had dinner at Wahlburgers and took the ferry back to Sydney. It was a beautiful beach day during our stop in Sydney.

We are going to Australia for 3 weeks and plan to spend a 7-9 days in an around Sydney. Is Manly a good place to base ourselves?
Manly
Manly, Australia
Hi Jack,
It certainly is! It is very close to Circular Quay/center of the city (30 min with the iconic big Manly ferry and only 18 min with the fast ferry), relaxed and beautifully located (with not only the impressive Manly Beach but also a lot of smaller and more secluded beaches and amaaaazing scenic walks). There are around a 150 cafes and restaurants around Manly area, nice shops and boutiques and a variety of accommodation options.
You will LOVE it!
If you decide to stay in Manly please pop in a say hi to us at the Hello Manly Information Center located at the wharf. We can give you great tips about the area and help organize any trips or attractions you might be interested in :)
See you soon, Jack!

Manly Beach is an excellent location. In addition to the beach there are some great restaurants and bars and a whole coastline of beaches. The of Sydney is only 30 mins by ferry or 15 mins by fast ferry. Several great walks are around. The tourism office is at the wharf. Also have a beer/meal at the 4 Pines Brewery across from the wharf and or the 16’ Skiff Club.

We'll be visiting Sydney in early Nov, and are considering also staying several days in Manly. What neighborhoods would you recommend for cafes, not overly touristy and near beaches? Also, we would like to kayak. Beach recommendations?

The beauty of Sydney and it’s suburbs, is you can simply walk out of your hotel - and find little communities, neighbourhoods where all the locals are which have great cafes and dining options. It’s safe to say any hotel or Home you stay at - there is something nearby. Plus it’s the fun of exploring.
Manly has a great kayak hiring place on its wharf on the esplanade there - which would be a better area to kayak, as Bondi is a surf beach.
Enjoying!!

@Pat S. I am visiting Sydney at the end of the month and was wondering, did you book ferry tickets in advance or did you take a ferry over there spontaneously? I am also planning on visiting Taronga Zoo and I found a website that offers a combo pass on the manlyferry website. I am wondering only because we are vising during rainy season so we are unsure of whether or not to book things in advance such as zoo tickets, GBR diving, and harbor cruises due to daily changes in the weather.
Thanks!

The Manly ferry is worth the trip.
Come for the day, and have a sunset dinner over the wharf.
Bring your swimmers, as the water may still be warm for snorkeling.
Recommend bike hire to see more area, in a shorter amount of time.
Travel around Sydney can be done by purchasing an opal card at any transport station with a booth or newsagency. All trains, buses and public ferry’s are swipe on and off.
Zoo will be cheaper to pre-purchase. But you can do this on the day of travel from the Manly Information Centre, or booking booths at Circular Quay.

Anyone knows how much is the cab fee from Kingsford airport to manly?
Meegan C
Manly Beach99 contributions
Hi!
Taxi fare is estimated at approx $80 when you include tolls. Could be more if it is peak hour, or traffic delays.
Dependent on how many people are travelling with you, and amount of luggage, it is easier and cheaper to do public transport.
There is a train terminal under the airport, with a direct link to Circular Quay. Here you go jump straight onto the Manly Ferry or Fast Ferry.
Total travel time approx 45mins, cost $25.
FYI - Uber is now available from the airport if you'd like a private vehicle.
