The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Central Business District
The Sydney Central Business District is abuzz with energy. Power brokers run to and from high rise buildings and after-work drink places, high-end shoppers tour venues like the QVB, and fine diners frequent the many celebrity chef restaurants. For a dose of culture, walk to the NSW Art Gallery, or visit the Sydney Museum. To escape the hustle and bustle, reconnect with nature at the Sydney Botanical Gardens or picnic lunch at High Park. No matter your interest, be sure to check the full calendar of events hosted by the city, from the Sydney Festival in January to October’s Good Food Month at Hyde Park.

    Gorgeous garden
It was a rainy day so we decided to take the bus tour around the garden. It was just us two behind Eli, the tour guide. The garden is absolutely gorgeous and Eli is an amazing guide. You can sense his passion for nature and he showed us around, answering our questions and even took a few pictures of us. Realising that the best way to experience the garden is to actually walk through it, we spent a good hour walking across the garden after our tour. Would highly recommend if you want to take things easy and enjoy the breadth of what nature has to offer. High praise for the garden keepers too!

    A monumental bara
The Botanic Garden in Sydney is a wonderful place to spend a day just wandering around and enjoying all that's on offer. The other day we visited and noticed a really wonderful work of art. It was a monumental bara. Fish hooks (bara) were crafted and used by Indigenous women for thousands of generations. They would fish from their canoes in the harbour, hauling in catches with bara tied with bush string, to cook on open fires. The bara art work, located on the Tarpeian Precinct Lawn of the Royal Botanic Gardens, has a gleaming finish reminiscent of local seashells. Its crescent shape reflects the shapes of the moon, the coves of the harbour, the sails of the Sydney Opera House and the arch of the Harbour Bridge. This artwork is a powerful expression of Aboriginal cultures. It’s an unusual and interesting work of art and worth a look.

    Spring has sprung
Sydney's extensive botanic gardens are looking very fine indeed at the moment as Spring arrives. Some interesting plantings and many lovely blooms. Definitely worth a stroll for both gardeners and non-gardeners.

    Excellent Tour!
As a gardener, I found our tour guide Anne’s knowledge extremely informative. She proudly took us on an hour plus walk through the historical trees of the gardens, naming each while sharing anecdotal uses for many of them. It was amazing to learn there are nearly 1,000 species of eucalyptus but koalas only eat 7 of them. The lush Palm Grove is planted with over 300 species and is a mecca for students. Anne also shared wonderful Australian history with us as the park, created in 1816, has seen Sydney grow dramatically. We wish the gardens and Anne all the best!

WHAT A GREAT WAY TO START OFF THE NEW YEAR
I just returned from an amazing walk thru the botanical gardens. So much to see and everything has a marker on it to describe the Latin name and English. Little side paths to move in and out. This was one of the best walks in a city garden I ever experienced. A must visit anytime you come to Sydney.

Beautiful garden in Sydney CBD area
Beautiful garden in the harbour area. Good place for evening stroll and spending quality time with your family. I would suggest walking to the Northeast side of the garden. There you will get an excellent view of the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour. Excellent place to take photos and soak in the view.

    Green space in the city
A huge green space located next to the Opera house, it’s full of trees, birds, and benches to rest. It includes a historical building for the government. It is amazing to spend few hours walking around and listen to the birds and take a lot of pictures. It is a great place to practice sports, photography, or to make small picnics

Burn off the travel meals here!
We spent a romantic day in the park and even went back a second day. The park is huge, gorgeous and FREE! It had a wonderful gift shop to purchase great souvenirs and support the gardens and a cute cafe. I highly recommend!

    Beautiful place to walk around
We had a lot of fun walking around the gardens. Everything was very clean and we did not notice a lot of litter. We saw a giant silk orb weaver in the trees. The web actually had a golden tingle. We saw lots of cool birds and there were some huge eels in the duck pond. There were lots of nice photo opportunities with the cool plants, trees, and flowers.

    Green Heart of Sydney
Green escape from the hustle of the city. It seemed that all plants of the region were represented. Along the pathway you will find sculptures and Museum of South Wales . There is something to look at every corner. Highly recommend place .

This is a great example of a Botanic garden. I always make a point of visiting the gardens of the cities I visit as I find them havens amongst the noice and chaos. The Sydney Gardens did not disappoint. Loads of spots to sit and read, have some quiet time, marvel at the varieties of plant life. 2 things I would mention.
1 a fun way to get there from the CBD is use the underground travelator from the underpass next to the Cathedral..
2 the cafe in the gardens is badly run, very unfriendly, over priced and if you are Vegan the options are non existent.
Best thing, take a picnic and enjoy the gorgeous gardens.

Walked through the gardens ourselves, had been there before. Thankfully the rain stopped & the area came alive with birds. The fruit bats in the tallest trees are enormous and as the sun goes down they take off to feed, quite spectacular.Well worth a couple hours of your time, so central to the city but so quiet and some of the best views of the Opera House and Bridge.

As a Sydneysider I often go to the Botanical Gardens. 441 Buses go from behind QVB (Queen Victoria Building) and run every 20 minutes. Or you can walk up through the gardens from the Sydney Opera House. There is a very nice restaurant in the middle of the gardens but also a snack bar. It’s lovely walking along the wall at the Harbour edge to the point known as Mrs Macquarie’s Chair. (Named for the wife of one of Sydney’s early Governors). Artisans in the Garden is a special event in October which is worth a visit. Also the Greenhouse is a venue for art exhibitions. The Calyx is a place where lunchtime concerts are held. There are plenty of cool shady places to sit on a hot day. To find our more there is a website giving details of the current program.

FEMMES.

We joined a long queue of people processing through The Calyx, at a special exhibition of women dressed immaculately in floral arrangements.
They were magnificent: Jenny Kee, Kylie Minogue, Ashley Barty, Freda Khalo and many other notables.
Just wondered to see such an array of beautiful flowers magically assembled by botanical artists.

Congratulations to those who prepared the Exhibition.

Tickets pre-booked meant that we could "jump the queue".

We weren't sure of the Botanical Gardens, but saw that they had a miniature "train" that was $5 per head SR. Disc. It was about a 20 minute ride. We saw the outsides of many different buildings. You could get off and venture into the buildings and wait for the next "train" to pick you up, but we were tired and enjoyed the view of all the flowering plants and trees on the grounds. Overall, a nice way to see the place.

This is a lovely way to pass a few hours walking around the Botanical Gardens. The views from by the lake are outstanding, taking in the sydney skyline. We especially liked the Chinese Garden and we also visited Calyx, a 5 AUS $ donation special exhibition of carnivorous plants.

The botanical gardens are one of my favourite places in Sydney. Beautiful to just wander through. Amazing plans and trees and wildlife. Walking from the entrance by the art gallery to the opera house is the best was to take someone to circular quay to see the opera house and bridge for the first time if they have never been to sydney before. That’s what i did snd my partner loved it. Sometimes theatre productions and outdoor cinema are on in the park so always look out for these too. Great place don’t miss it if your visiting.

This garden is not just lovely, it’s beautifully thought out and arranged. Even on a hot summer day, it’s a peaceful refuge from the hustle that is Sydney. While all the gardens, including the Rose Garden, are wonderful, the Succulent Garden is a standout. A huge sculptural planter in the center is a focal point, but the variety, quality, colors, and textural contrasts of the plantings are just stunning. We couldn’t stop taking pictures, and were so taken with it that we spent extra time visiting. Don’t miss it!

The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney is so accessible and easy to get to from Circular Quay. Just walk in the direction of the Sydney Opera House and you are there. Covering an area of 30 hectares this is a beautiful open green space within Sydney city. Beautiful lawns, trees and different gardens. You can spend a few hours here and feel really relaxed. Pack a picnic or else grab a bite to eat at one of their cafes. We also enjoyed visiting The Calyx which has different displays on. There are free guided walks. A place for all ages.

Two issues both pertaining to access.

On April 1st, I attended the Handa opera production of La Traviata at Fleet Steps, part of the RBG Sydney green space. We walked from our accommodation at the Rocks through the Botanic Gardens to the opera. However, instead of being able to enjoy and explore the gardens en route, we had to rush through because the gardens locked gates at 6pm! Furthermore, there was no way of walking back along a beautiful walk along the same way after the opera ended, instead requiring a long detour through the city. Physically handicapped friends who are in motorised wheelchairs who could appreciate the travel through the Botanic Gardens are forced to negotiate the long walk up and down hills or to take a taxi.
Can there not be access provided on nights of the opera?

To further add insult to injury, on April 2nd, Good Friday, I decided to walk back to see the Botanic Gardens as I was flying out that afternoon. The gates remained locked until 10am.

I am disappointed by the conduct of whoever is in charge of gates.
