It was our first visit to Australia so we thought a good way to learn a little history would be to take the walking tour of The Rocks where Sydney was settled by convicts from England. We did learn a little but most often it was a matter of not being able to hear the young lady giving the tour.... More

Our knowledgeable tour guide, Helen, lead our group well in this walking tour of The Rocks. It was not only enjoyable but enlightening. I love the history of the place and the buildings are such a sight to see. Nice to know that the protests against the proposal to demolish the buildings and replace them with ugly 60's era high... I did not know what to expect from the Rocks Walking Tours. We arrived for our private tour on a beautiful Sunday morning about twenty minutes early. Our guide, Brian, was already present at the office and offered to take us out early affording us the additional 20 minutes to the 90 minute tour. Brian was fantastic. He was a... More

I first did the walking tour of the town and I heard that they are also doing one especially for the Rocks. Danika was great in explaining not only the history of the Rocks but also the architecture of it and how it changed through the years. Besides these, she also included current, pressing issues regarding The Rocks.

This tour was really nice and informative. The tour was a small group and provided the history and the frame of reference for where you were on your travels. They gave great tips of where else to visit while on your stay and was an appropriate amount of time (not excessively long!) Very interesting history of the place which I... More

This tour was not physically strenuous and provided an incredible insight into the early history of the Rocks area. We accessed areas I would never have thought to go into without doing this tour! HIGHLY RECOMMEND this tour!

I booked this tour for 46 delegates at a conference. From the initial booking to the time that the tour finished, they were very friendly and professional. Olivia in the front office was extremely helpful and the 3 guides made the tours fun and interesting I would strongly recommend this tour and the length is exactly the time needed. Well... More

This walking history tour is the best value for money! Brian's passion for Australian history, personality and sense of humour made this tour the most interesting 90 minutes of our entire Sydney visit! You are taken down secret little streets, into convict back yards and explained in detail the difficulties our early settlers faced. History buffs will be blown away... More

Staying in The Rocks

Neighbourhood Profile
The Rocks
The first residents of the Rocks were convicts and sailors from the old nation. As the oldest neighbourhood in the city, the area's cobblestone streets host more than 100 heritage sites and buildings, including the oldest house in Sydney, Camden Cottage, which was built in 1816. Taste a “midi “ or a “schooner” of beer and dine “al fresco” on the waterfront at some of the oldest pubs in Sydney. The weekend markets at the Rocks are where you can find local artists' hand-made souvenirs, organic food and designer jewelry in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. To enjoy some of the best Australian and international contemporary art, the MCA museum is open every day and select evenings. At the end of a long day of sightseeing, be sure to save energy to dance the night away at the area's many late night entertainment venues.
