Lived in Sydney all my life but learnt heaps. Walk is easy paced with lots of stops and alternative routes if you don't want to climb too many stairs. Definitely worth doing.

Our fantastic guide, Vickie, took our tour group through the streets and lanes of The Rocks, explaining the early days of the settlement and its development. It was both instructive and entertaining at the same time. The tour lasts around 1 1/2 hour+ and it's worthwhile. There's quite a few staircases used during the tour, so it might not be... More

This was a great tour of The Rocks... our guide Anne was fantastic. Tour lasts just under 2 hours and is at a leisurely pace, so it is good for all ages. Never would have seen all the hidden alleys and streets without this tour, and we really got historic context to the whole area.

Very interesting walking tour that lasted about 1.5 hours. Easy walking pace with a few flights of steps. Hear about the Aboriginal life in the Sydney area, the discovery of Australia by British explorers and its subsequent use as a penal colony. Particularly interesting were the details and surviving examples of convict living conditions and their work. The tour entered... More

Our guide was both knowledgeable and experienced and provided our small group with many interesting details about the colonisation of Australia and the history of the the Rocks area. A lovely way to spend 2 hours on a warm day.

Absolutely superb. Helen was a brilliant guide - sharing her evident love for the area with great passion and expert knowledge. Even regular visitors and Sydney locals learnt something new. A fantastic way to get to know this part of the city, and relatively easy on the feet.

What a fantastic tour of the rocks!! I highly recommend it. Helen our guide was excellent, her knowledge of the area and the stories she told were captivating. I was very impressed that she answered all our questions and as she spoke to the group, she looked at each person, this made the tour more personal. The 1.5 hour walk... More

Tour gave a good overview of the area and the history, for an appropriate length of time. (Not too short; not too long.) The tour gave us a better appreciation of how Australia / Sydney was built by convicts. Helen was an informative guide. We had lunch afterwards at the Glenmore restaurant / roof deck nearby, based on the recommendation... More

A very informative and interesting walking tour of the earliest settlement in Australia. Helen, our guide was clear and easily heard. She had a wealth of fascinating information and lead the group at a gentle and unhurried pace. I really enjoyed the printed pictures she showed us of the early history of the colony and the country. A great tour.

Our guide Anne gave us an in-depth tour of The Rocks and all it's interesting sites. Highly recommend for those interested in Sydney's history. Tour went for around 1.5 hours; we did a little extra because we were happy to stay on a bit. I'd allow 2 hours for the tour as it depends on the pace of the group.

Staying in The Rocks

Neighbourhood Profile
The Rocks
The first residents of the Rocks were convicts and sailors from the old nation. As the oldest neighbourhood in the city, the area's cobblestone streets host more than 100 heritage sites and buildings, including the oldest house in Sydney, Camden Cottage, which was built in 1816. Taste a “midi “ or a “schooner” of beer and dine “al fresco” on the waterfront at some of the oldest pubs in Sydney. The weekend markets at the Rocks are where you can find local artists' hand-made souvenirs, organic food and designer jewelry in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. To enjoy some of the best Australian and international contemporary art, the MCA museum is open every day and select evenings. At the end of a long day of sightseeing, be sure to save energy to dance the night away at the area's many late night entertainment venues.
