Nice place for a weekend trip. The view from the chairlift is worth and you can see various trails. There are few restaurants on the top though pretty expensive. Also, the place gets crowded so finding a spot to sit & relax can be challenging. We went towards end of August so missed the snowfall (snow is only found on the ski trails by this time), would love to go again during the peak winters (i.e. June-July) to learn ski.
Thredbo and Perisher are 2 of the main skiing trails in the snowy mountains region, if anyone is new or alien to skiing (like myself), taking a skiing class is a must do activity here (you would anyway feel odd man out if you are just sitting on the bench watching others ski).
You can take some beginner class on one of the easier trails available and you wont regret it ever. You might as well find a place in one of the Alpine village motels to stay over a weekend and take 2-3 days classes to get going.

Its interesting to see your ski resorts in summer. Thredbo was alive with mountain bikers, and Charlotte Pass had a nice round of walks to viewing platforms
The roads were in excellent condition, considering they get frozen annually. My only disappointment was that the last 7km to Guthega was a poor condition gravel road.

Ive called my review Crystal Clear because that is what you will get when you come to the Snowies in NSW. The nights are crystal clear. Viewing stars as you wonder out to a resturant, pub or cafe at night is a brilliant pastime, the sky over this area has the cleanest air in the world and in winter or summer when there is not much moonlight you will be blown away. The streams through this sensitive alpine region are also crystal clear. With snow melt and springs that start up high in the hills, the waters are teaming with life, you can see the trout in the water as you walk the banks of lovely mountain brooks like the Thredbo river, the Eucumbene river and not to forget the Snowy river.
The air is crystal clear, so as you walk the trails through the mountains, ski downhill or cross country or mountain bike you will be breathless but know you are breathing air that has no pollutants. The views from various peaks are also crystal clear, you can see all the way back to Jindabyne and Cooma in the north to Victoria in the South. I know to well all these intracate details becuase I live in the region. Come to the Snowy Mountains for a break, a breath of fresh air and some Crystal Clear vision.

After a trip to Adelong we returned home along the Snowy Mountain Highway via Talbingo. It's a very scenic drive, beautiful countryside, good roads and we even saw brumbies grazing. How lucky we are to live in a country of such diverse natural splendour.

I visited Snowy Mountain in last June and I drove there with a buddy. We started our journey from Canberra quite late that we didn't get the chance to fully appreciate the mountain. It took us 2 hours ++ to get there since we did not dare to drive faster than the allowed speed. On our way, we stopped by at Cooma to get some information and buy several souvenirs. And we passed through Jindabyne which is really a nice town by the lake. We were suggested by a friend to take the route to Thredbo, and get to the mountain by a ski tube at Perisher Ski Tube station. The return fare is AUD52. Instead of Perisher, we went further up to Blue Cow. Well, it was already 3 pm so the view was not that great with the absence of sun light. But stepping our foot on the snow was cool. We did not do the skiing or snowboarding as we were not mentally prepared for that and the rental of the equipment were expensive for SE Asians standards. But we noted on the rental fee and we would definitely try skiing and snowboarding the next time we go to this kind of place..

We did the 23 km Main Range loop, took about six and a half hours. It's classified as hard but you dont need to be very fit. Checked weather condition with the national park services before you take off. Bring a lot of water and a sun hat.
The views at every turn was breathtaking, and you walked through many different terrains. The trek is never crowded, and most of the time you are quite alone.
We recommend starting at the Blue Lake trek, because the first 2 hours is probably the hardest portion of the trek, although it is also the most beautiful. Whereas the last 8 km is essentially flat dirt trek.
No toilet facility until you get to Mt Kosciusko trek, 11 and a half km into the trek, and you are discouraged from relieving yourself along the way, certainly not anywhere near stream or waterway.

Hi there!
Even though it might not be the most challenging mountain in the world, Australia's highest mountain, Mt. Kosioszko, 2228 m, is a nice place to hike and enjoy the beautiful view around. It's technically easy to walk up the mountain (can use the cable car from Thredbo, but it's nicer without), but still it's 950 m in altitude and 21 km retourn.
You might also meet strange people that try to collect the "7 summits" and tell you their heroic stories about Everest and everything ;-)

Cold, wild weather and heaps of snow and ice blasting in your face = heaven on earth. If you want to experience a wake up call to your inner nature, stand at the top of Mt Perisher or Thredbo during a blizzard and feel the exhilaration. Mountain bike the ready made trails during the milder months.

It was my first time at snow. I went to Selwyn resort to ski and had some stops on the road for pictures and tea. The mountain is incredibly beautiful, but you need to be careful driving thought it. It was a good time.
I recommend it.

Not much snow when we went but the prizes of food and drinks are gold. Need to put more attractions just in case there is not much snow. I wonder why Aussies go overseas rather than spending money here in our own backyard because we charge hips and gold for most food and attraction.

Hi Irfan,
There are many options available. The winter season kicks off this year 10 June and will run until early October. For small children, just about any during this period would be suitable. Peak time when snow is virtually guaranteed is July-August.
You can either stay right on the snow in Perisher, Thredbo and Charlotte Pass. Or you can stay in Jindabyne, Adaminaby (for Selwyn Snow Resort) or other surrounding towns which will mean driving up to the snowfields each day.
Each snow resort is good for small children, for snow play, tobogganing and for learning to ski.
Perhaps the best advice is to visit each resort's website for information.

Hi,
My family of 6 are intending to visit Snowy Mountain around 23rd to 26th May.
Would this period be a good time to visit?
As this period is still considered as Autumn however its pretty close to the Winter what are the recommended attire?
Do you have a recommended itinerary for traveller during this period?
Regards,
Wilem
