    WOW experience was just WOW
Keeper Abbie was amazing. She spent the day with me, meeting and feeding lions, tigers, bears, giraffes, the list goes on. Doing the cheetah experience was a bucket list item. Surprise of the day was Arataki the sun bear and hiding his morning feed and then watching him locate and eat it. So many memories. If you are thinking of doing, my advice … just do it.

Good zoo, if that's what floats your boat.
Canberra zoo is a well appointed zoo, if you are into them. The enclosures are well maintained with plenty or room for the animals. Nice easy walk round the park with the rhino cafe at the opposite end to the entrance. This is the cafe with the hot Tucker. If you like zoo's and want to kill a couple of hours give this place a look.

    WOW Tour is fantastic!
I did the Wonders of Wildlife Tour and it was EXCELLENT! I got to visit so many different animals, it was incredible. I fed otters, a tree kangaroo, lions, tigers, giraffe, zebra, sun bears, lemurs, and so many others. I held a snake and even got to pat a cheetah! Morning tea and lunch was included (although no vegan options for morning tea - although I did have a delicious coffee). The keeper/guide I was with was so friendly and knowledgable, and took lots of photos while I was busy with the animals. Definitely worth the money!

    Great outdoor activity in Canberra
I took 2x teenagers and we had a great time. The weather was lovely, they had plenty of phone data and lots of shady places to rest. We ripped through it pretty quickly, as teens get bored easily, but loved the rhinos, tigers, aquarium, cheetahs. Also loved the large enclosures and the well kept grounds. It was busy, but the zoo didn’t feel busy.

This was a highlight of my life! Fantastic experience with an outstanding zoo keeper (Brendan) that had amazing knowledge on all of the animals. Zoo is wonderful and the animals treated like royalty. They eat better than most. Something I won't forget. Small group meant we saw so much more and were able to learn far more than I thought we would. Amazing experience!!

The tour exceeded all my expectations. Whilst I have done a number of animal encounters previously this tour was special. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and ensured we had the best experience. I highly recommend the experience to any animal lover.

An amazing day. Being able to be up close and personal with the animals was a real treat. The guide was great, and his knowledge of the animals was exceptional. He even knew most of the animal's names. We had a lovely morning tea and lunch included which was a bonus.

National Zoo and Aquarium Wonders of Wildlife Experience - Canberra Australia
We really loved this experience. Our guide (John) was friendly, engaging, and fun to listen to. He was knowledgeable about the animals and we learned a lot. We loved interacting with all the animals. We were able to hand-feed a large variety of animals including giraffes, otters, roughed lemur, pygmy marmoset, emu, and meerkats. We were able to pet a cheetah and a rhino. We fed larger animals through cages/plexiglass (lion, tiger, hyena). We loved that the pygmy marmosets sat on our shoulders while we fed them and how social the lemurs were. We also really enjoyed hiding food for the sun bear. If you love animals, this is such a great experience. They also provide lunch and mid-morning tea/snack.

    A wonderful day
I recently bought a Wonders of Wildlife tour for my wife which gave her an entire day behind the scenes at the National Zoo & Aquarium. It was a truly wonderful experience as she went behind the scenes to see how the Zoo operates and view at close range the behaviour of so many animals. She was able to feed many of them and learn about their habits and history. She learned about the many efforts the National Zoo & Aquarium is making to not only provide an active and healthy environment for the animals but their involvement in animal conservation programs around the world. We highly recommend the Zoo and this tour for anyone.

While the price tag may certainly make you think twice about this tour it was worth every cent. If you love animals and want to get up close and personal this was an incredible opportunity. Our guide Stella was very knowledgable and engaging and ensured we had as many opportunities as possible to encounter animals from tigers to tree kangaroos! Being in a small group meant that everyone had equal time at each enclosure and booking in a group of four kept the price down and ensured we had a fun day. We were at the zoo from 8am until 4pm, and the early start allowed us to see animals much more active. We were impressed at how many animals we were able to touch and feed. The staff (keepers) at the zoo were friendly and engaging and were happy to talk about the animals they look after. An excellent day out!

The National Zoo in Canberra contrasts with many other Australian zoos, being privately run and established more recently. This means that design of the animal enclosures is closer to their natural habitats and more spacious.

However, a visit is certainly not cheap. We purchased a family ticket for two adults and three children which came to $130 which was a saving of $35 compared with individual tickets. That was before any drinks and snacks, or succumbing to requests for souvenir soft toys etc.

Being fair though, we could have brought more of our own food for a picnic or barbecue, and resisted the pleas for toys.

On a weekday in school holidays we were directed to the overflow carpark, but the zoo areas were not crowded, even at the short talks from keepers about specific animals, around the zoo at various times.

Some of the walk-through areas were closed off, which was disappointing, but overall it was a good experience. Signage about the animals was good, if a bit sparse.

We did the early tour and had just a wonderful time! I do love this zoo and was glad to visit again. The tour is amazing value for the chance to feed so many lovely animals.

Although it's an early start, once the tour ended we were free to enjoy the premises ourselves before it opened to the public which was a much more relaxing way to enjoy the zoo.

I really recommend booking in a tour of you are an animal lover as the team get you up close with them and you learn so much more about their species.

Entrance to the zoo is not cheap and cost us over 100 AUD for two adults and a child. There is a cheap family entrance which would be good for two or more children. The zoo is very nicely laid out and presented, but I was a bit disappointed that the Australian collection was not exhaustive. There appear to be only two koalas and the single (apparently) wombat has passed away and not been replaced (yet). Walabees, kangaroos, dingos, emus, Tasmanian devils - that's about it. The non-Australian animal collection is also not amazingly complete. "National Zoo", but I am guessing that there are other zoos in larger cities with better collections. In any case, plenty to walk around for a couple of hours and the kids will definitely enjoy.

Hi Rafi S Thanks for your post. We offer visitors an all-round experience where they can view, meet and interact with Australian native wildlife, including a number that you may have missed. We have Australian native mammals, marsupials, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians, as well as a large range of exotic animals, birds, reptiles and fish, including giraffe, rhino, zebra, lion, tiger, cheetah, otter, meerkat, bear, a significant range of monkeys and much more. Although the range of native animals may not be ‘exhaustive’, we try to offer visitors an insight into a wide variety of species from around the world and we are pleased that you found it an enjoyable experience.

I booked two tickets for the National Zoo & Aquarium's "Wonders of Wildlife" (WOW) Tour for my husband's birthday. The purchase was completed easily online and there is plenty of information about what the day entails.

An early start is required (we were at the zoo by about 7.30am) but is worth it as the program runs on the animal's natural routines.

We were greeted at the zoo by our personal guide, John. The tour is intimate and only takes a maximum of 4 people but we were the only people booked that day so had our guide all to ourselves. The tour goes all day - a good 7 hours but I had a late schedule change and needed to finish early. I informed John who went out of his way to adjust the schedule so that I could see as many animals as possible before I had to leave.

The encounters were amazing and something I will never forget for the rest of my life. There aren't many people in the world who can say they have patted a white rhino!

We got up close and personal and fed so many amazing animals including Sun Bears, White Lions, Tigers, Giraffes and Tree Kangaroos.

Feeding the otters was a real highlight as well as numerous species of Madagascan lemurs and teeny tiny pygmy marmosets - soooo cute. Scratching lemurs under their arms and watching them raise their hands in the air in response was crazy! Patting a cheetah is also very cool.

Apart from feeding the animals, we got real behind the scenes access and got to see all the cool stuff that the general public doesn't normally see.

A very nice lunch and morning tea was also included in the price which I think was a real bargain considering it's a full day with a personal guide and you pat and feed some of the rarest animals in the world. Be warned, it's a long day so dress for comfort and wear good, supportive walking shoes or trainers. My fitbit said we'd done about 15kms walking.

A huge personal thank you to our guide, John. He was intelligent, personable and charming and went out of his way to make the day a huge success. Thank you for a day we will never forget!

I would say this was the nicest zoo I’ve been too. It probably helped we were there on a weekday, so not busy. Spread out, lots of space for animals, lovely gardens.

We did the Awesome Roarsome Tour and African Savannah Tour in the morning. Very worth it. There is a discount if you book more than 1 tour online. VERY worth it. Lions up and active in the morning, roaring etc. Walking around later in the day it was harder to see some of those big animals (due to the lovely big enclosures they have) as they are napping etc. So highly recommend these early morning tours, you get up close and personal and Sarah our guide was so friendly and informative. We think doing both tours was fantastic.

Aquarium
If you are wanting to see sharks, eels and all you expect in an aquarium this will be a huge disappointment.
As for the Zoo it is so so, was expecting a lot more from the capital of Australia.
If you are a tourist to Australia and wanting to see a Zoo and Aquarium I would say if Melbourne or Sydney are on your itinerary go to either of these

Hi Dianne, Thanks for your feedback. Being an inland aquarium, it is not possible for us to be of the size or magnitude of the seaboard ones as we have to truck our water from the coast. However, we believe it is an important adjunct to a great zoo and gives visitors a look at ocean and river fish, sharks, eels, reptiles and amphibians. Add the urban and open range zoos and we believe that the overall value is very good. We house over 90 different species of both native Australian and exotic animals and we hope that every guest can find something engaging. We realise that not every facility will appeal to every visitor and their reactions will vary, as confirmed by the feedback that was left by other visitors at the same time. These are representative of a lot of feedback that we receive, but we acknowledge that you have a different opinion.

My husband and I took our son (2 years old) to the National Zoo and Aquarium in December, and we had such an amazing time! While it was extremely hot (during the terrible bushfires), we thought the zoo was well put together as there were plenty of shade, picnic areas and accessible walkways.

The zoo hosted numerous animal which our son was delighted to see. The aquarium was good although we didn't spend too long in the exhibit as it area was small and got crowded quickly with other guests.

We were blown away with the kids play area. We definitely did not expect this! The were several slides, play grounds, swings and children's obstacle courses where my son (and husband) had a great time playing on/with. Note: at the time of our visit, this area was listed as "under construction" on the map. But we can definitely say that this was so much fun, as the play areas were decorated with numerous animals and had a safari theme, which was both fun and educational.

We highly recommend visiting! Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and bring lots of water!

We recently went on a WOW experience at the zoo and it certainly lived up to it’s name in every way. The tour is not cheap and we had hoped to receive good value for money, but we would have happily paid double for the fantastic time that we had. Our tour guide was a zoo keeper and a member of the education team so the breadth and depth of his knowledge was amazing. He appeared to know every animal in the zoo by it’s name and never tired of answering the thousands of questions that we bombarded him with throughout the day. The one on one experiences that we had with the animals were unbelievable and we were most impressed with the cleanliness and well thought through layout of the zoo in general. Full marks National Zoo, we only wish that we could do it again tomorrow!!!

The National Zoo and Aquarium has a good range of animals in easy to see displays. The walkways are easy to negotiate, although a few can be a bit steep for wheelchair users. You can take your time to move from area to area to see the animals and if you need a rest there are some good covered areas to sit down and refresh. There are some good areas to buy a range of foods and drinks. There is also a gift shop to pick up your souvenir, and while there take a look a the giant animal jigzaw puzzle hanging on the wall in the shop. I did find the Aquarium a bit smaller than expected and it was very warm inside and for people like me looking at the round fish tanks could trigger vertigo. Like any Zoo try to time your visit when it is not to hot so that the animals are more active. Early in the morning is usually a good time.
