About
The National Zoo & Aquarium is privately owned and Australia's only combined Zoo and Aquarium. That's 2 attractions in one! We are situated on around 25 hectares of land just five minutes from the centre of Canberra. With a wide variety of both native and exotic animals, as well as the largest inland saltwater tank in Australia, there is something for everyone. Wander in and have a casual stroll around the park, or make a day of it with family, friends and make use of our picnic areas and complimentary BBQ facilities. Our Animal Encounters provide visitors with an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the worlds most amazing creatures!

- Sally DMelbourne, Australia359 contributionsExpensive day out, but enjoyable…The Canberra Zoo is impressive: but it’s huge (47 acres) and you won’t be able to see everything in one day. Be warned: it’s not cheap. Canberra Zoo is privately owned and adults entry is $52 and children $30 (ages 3-17). A family pass is more economical at $144 for 2 adults & 3 children. Many locals take advantage of the annual $385 family pass which entitles two adults and up to three children to visit any time within that 12 months. It’s very good value. The adventure playground is a key attraction and it’s easy to see why. Situated beside the Wombat Cafe, there is something interesting for all ages. But I’d advise families to take their own food/drink rather than buy from the cafe. The egg (too much mayo) and the chicken sandwiches were tasteless and awful. And unfortunately the cafe specialises in fried food and we had to distract our nearly 3 y old grandson from spying the chips! The ‘baby chino’ was also disappointing as there was no froth at all. Indeed, the coffees were rather ordinary. I’d suggest a treat for the day can be an ice-cream/icy pole from the freezer. If you are taking young children, it’s advisable to take a picnic rug and sit on the grassed area, because the concrete trestle tables & seats are not suitable for younger children (our grandson fell off & hit his head).Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 29 December 2022
- JanellMudgee, Australia153 contributionsHiggledy piggletyThe design of the zoo was very higgledy pigglety. It didn’t flow & a lot of doubling back & forth. Plenty of attractions & beautiful animals including fish. Expected aquarium to be larger given size of Canberra.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 September 2023
- joday013Western Australia, Australia157 contributionsGood zoo, if that's what floats your boat.Canberra zoo is a well appointed zoo, if you are into them. The enclosures are well maintained with plenty or room for the animals. Nice easy walk round the park with the rhino cafe at the opposite end to the entrance. This is the cafe with the hot Tucker. If you like zoo's and want to kill a couple of hours give this place a look.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 September 2023
- Jean IMelbourne, Australia64 contributionsGreat outdoor activity in CanberraI took 2x teenagers and we had a great time. The weather was lovely, they had plenty of phone data and lots of shady places to rest. We ripped through it pretty quickly, as teens get bored easily, but loved the rhinos, tigers, aquarium, cheetahs. Also loved the large enclosures and the well kept grounds. It was busy, but the zoo didn’t feel busy.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 September 2023
- Rohit GAuckland Central, New Zealand344 contributionsHits and MIssesIts the second time we went in. The previous time was a year ago. I didnt really want to go and see the same animals again. Then I read about the largest salt water tank (in where ?). So we went in. I had forgotten my previous trip. We ended up enjoying looking at the animals. The aquarium was a big disappointment. It could be so much better. Perhaps it is largest in ACT !!! It is well organised for kids. But not well organised for a visit. The signs are terrible. Everyone was struggling. There is no clear way of getting to a toilet, a restaurant or the exit. Its is a MESS. The food is expensive and rubbish. I don't expect fine dining. But the falafel rolls did not get heated (I know it will take too long) and just had too much white flour doughy wrap, chunky layers of it with nothing else in close proximity. Ditch the rolls and just do nice sandwiches.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 October 2023

We really loved this experience. Our guide (John) was friendly, engaging, and fun to listen to. He was knowledgeable about the animals and we learned a lot. We loved interacting with all the animals. We were able to hand-feed a large variety of animals including giraffes, otters, roughed lemur, pygmy marmoset, emu, and meerkats. We were able to pet a cheetah and a rhino. We fed larger animals through cages/plexiglass (lion, tiger, hyena). We loved that the pygmy marmosets sat on our shoulders while we fed them and how social the lemurs were. We also really enjoyed hiding food for the sun bear. If you love animals, this is such a great experience. They also provide lunch and mid-morning tea/snack.

An amazing day. Being able to be up close and personal with the animals was a real treat. The guide was great, and his knowledge of the animals was exceptional. He even knew most of the animal's names. We had a lovely morning tea and lunch included which was a bonus.

The tour exceeded all my expectations.
Whilst I have done a number of animal encounters previously this tour was special.
Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and ensured we had the best experience.
I highly recommend the experience to any animal lover.

Although the price tag might make you reconsider going on this tour, I can assure you that it was well worth every penny. This was a fantastic chance for anyone who has a passion for animals and wishes to interact with them on a more personal level.

A fantastic zoo experience. The animals seem to have a good amount of space, shade and shelter, and their spaces seem well maintained. . There are plenty of viewing areas to see each animal and the information displays are detailed and interesting. We spent about 6.5 hours there.

This was a highlight of my life! Fantastic experience with an outstanding zoo keeper (Brendan) that had amazing knowledge on all of the animals. Zoo is wonderful and the animals treated like royalty. They eat better than most. Something I won't forget. Small group meant we saw so much more and were able to learn far more than I thought we would. Amazing experience!!

I did the Wonders of Wildlife Tour and it was EXCELLENT! I got to visit so many different animals, it was incredible. I fed otters, a tree kangaroo, lions, tigers, giraffe, zebra, sun bears, lemurs, and so many others. I held a snake and even got to pat a cheetah! Morning tea and lunch was included (although no vegan options for morning tea - although I did have a delicious coffee). The keeper/guide I was with was so friendly and knowledgable, and took lots of photos while I was busy with the animals. Definitely worth the money!

What is the cost of a wheelchair hire?
Hi Frank we hire Wheel chairs for $5 for the day.
However we have limited supply so it is best if you book in advance.

Is the National Zoo and Aquarium the type of place you could see in 1 day without rushing? Or would you need 2 days: one for the zoo, one for the aquarium? Eg. The Melbourne Aquarium you need 2-3 hours to see properly - is the Aquarium in Canberra smaller or bigger than the one in Melbourne?

It’s definitely achievable to see the zoo and aquarium in a day. We wandered round at a leisurely pace and spent a lot of time viewing each of the animals and stopped for lunch. There was plenty of time to spare! hope this helps. Not sure about the size compared to Melbourne.

Has anyone done the animal encounters? I'm looking for ones where you can get a photo with the animal/ hold the animal if it applies? I will only have one day to go to the zoo so won't be able to see all of them. Also are there any tour groups from Sydney to get there?

Sorry I didn’t answer sooner. I hope I’m not too late. I’ve done the Cheetah encounter and it was amazing! We bought a Red Panda encounter for a friend and it was so sweet. I doubt very much if there’d be a tour from Sydney.

What's the food like?
Pre made sandwiches or make them on the spot? Wholemeal bread? Chips? What's the prices like
Or is it best to take own food?
