Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This fabulous museum in Canberra City was a wonderful surprise. We were searching for the display for the Telopea Park High School reunion memorabilia which was certainly good. However we found the current main exhibition about photography brilliant. So well curated! We also found the permanent exhibition very interesting with a representative range of artefacts from the Canberra and wider area, not favouring either indigenous or early settlement days over the other. The ones I particularly remember are the beautiful indigenous Possum Cloak, a painting/drawing of Christ Church in Queanbeyan and early paintings of the Monaro by Elioth Gruner. The accessibility and curatorship of both exhibitions was commendable regarding space, selection and display. The reception staff were very welcoming, helpful and informative. There is a small coffee shop within to take a pause to take it all in. The Australian Museum could take some tips. I'll be back- it was impressive.

We visit Canberra roughly twice a year and have only been to this museum a few times in the past.
Today's visit made us realise we must visit more often. The Sidney Nolan exhibition upstairs was excellent, as were all the other exhibitions downstairs. Plenty to see and enjoy for free for a few hours.

I enjoyed watching the short movie and seeing the old artefacts from long ago. The cafe has delicious food and the museum shop has interesting things to buy as keepsakes.

Beautiful setting with a lovely cafe and very helpful staff. It is only small, so they can only show so much. Find out what they are showing as they change often. Close to the centre of Canberra too, which is handy.

I spent a day doing the galleries and museums of Canberra. I was a little underwhelmed with some of Canberra’s offerings however thoroughly enjoyed the little gem that is the Canberra Museum.

We had been here before, and knew it was good, but had still underestimated it. From the historical artwork to the Sydney Nolan permanent display and the contemporary artwork, then the detailed notes and artefacts of the Canberra's history, we were enthralled for hours. We had morning tea and a light lunch.

We only knew about this gallery from an article in the Review magazine of the Weekend Australian newspaper. It’s located close to the Civic Centre. It is quieter and has a much more relaxed and low-key atmosphere than the bigger and more well known galleries and museums. Wonderful staff, interesting displays and an excellent, small and reasonably priced cafe. A permanent and special Sydney Nolan exhibition upstairs was another surprise. Highly recommended.

Really enjoyed my brief visit to the museum. Four nicely curated galleries. One gallery focussed on the city of Canberra, and the burnt out dishwasher from the 2003 fires was particularly haunting. The Habitat temporary exhibition was really good. The Nolan gallery was also excellent. The Museum is not The Louvre, nor does it try to be, but it has a lovely collection and is worth a visit.

A really nice museum & gallery with some beautiful staff who were proud of the displayed art and took time to explain the set-out. I found the museum easy to navigate around with some interesting information on Canberra and its people, well worth the visit and when staying in Canberra a must see

There was a very interesting exhibition called Jennings Germans on but now sadly finished. It is the story of AV Jennings (the project house builder) & 150 carpenters he brought from Germany to Canberra in 1951. I had never heard of this.
There is the Nolan Collection that was moved from Lanyon, a quaint fan exhibition & some stuff concentrating on Canberra.

I am on a very tight schedule on an official trip to Canberra. However I did want to tour the Canberra museum and gallery. How much time should I budget for a tour to this museum?

This is only a small museum that focuses on local Canberra matters. If you are tight for time, you could do this in an hour.
