Interesting

This was a small but interesting museum. We unfortunately missed seeing the mint in action as the staff had a Christmas party, will visit again but I will call beforehand to make sure the mint is running as it would be interesting to watch.

Boring and not much to do
Jul. 2021
Such a disappointment! There were a small number of coin exhibits which were interesting and you can stand and look down from afar at the workers as they made coins. As a family of 6 we spent perhaps 20 minutes there - the majority of that was in the gift shop! The 2 8 year olds weren't very engaged and the 2 12 year olds spent 5 minutes looking at the exhibits and people and wanted to leave. Glad we went to say we have been, but wouldn't go back.

Interesting and informative
Jun. 2021 • Family
The tour guide was very knowledgeable on the history of money in Australia. My boys found it very interesting and just wish we could have actually seen money being made at the time we were there (1pm).
The cafe at the entrance though was terrible. Only prélasse food in the window and it took the guy 15 minutes just to toast the pre made sandwiches. No choice for kid friendly meals. The sweet potato sausage roll was awful.

But the actual mint was good. Just eat before you go!

Fun for the whole family

Surprised how much this has changed from when I was a kid. Great set up for all ages. Loved seeing money being passed through the machines. However $3 to make $1 is a bit crazy but we pairs for it and my daughter loved it.

Making money at the Mint
Jun. 2021
Since it was established in 1965, the Royal Australian Mint has produced 15 billion coins, Most are circlating coins, legal tender -- the sort of thing you hand over to buy a cop of coffee. Some are premium products, which are collectible. At the top of the tree are investment grade coins, for example, gold. This is a wonderful stop on any tour of Canberra. And no, they don't give free samples.

Thanks for your review. This is a great summary of what we do here at the Mint! While we don’t give out free samples, we do have free public tours – we would highly recommend joining one next time you’re in town to learn more about our history.

Excellent tour with Graham
May 2021 • Family
We did a tour with Graham and it was amazing! He was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We were travelling with an 8 year old and a 3 year old and he took their questions and the three year olds wandering off on his stride. So many interesting facts! Highly recommended.

Very interesting free tour
May 2021 • Couples
We went on a Monday for the free 2pm tour which was really interesting but disappointing as none of the coin production areas were operating as all staff were on afternoon tea at the same time.

Fantastic Guided Tour
Apr. 2021
We signed up for a guided tour of the mint and it was definitely a highlight. Our guide told us about how money was first used in the formative years in Australia and it was great to learn about it. It is also interesting to see how the coins were being stamped at the factory downstairs. Chances are higher of seeing the factory in action on weekdays but we were told there's no guarantee as it depends on the coin orders they get.
Overall, great place to visit but do book the guided tour if you can. The gift shop have some great coin collection too.
