Excellent Place to Start Your Canberra Holiday
Feb. 2021
Stunning views over Lake Burley Griffin and super-helpful, super-knowledgeable staff!

My family and I popped in to get some information about how the best things to do and see in Canberra, and we were welcomed by Jim who simply could not do enough to help us! His knowledge about and love for Canberra were obvious, and he was happy to share all he knew with us. He gave us some excellent suggestions and tips, and put on a film for us to watch in the purpose-built cinema room.

We had been expecting a few brochures, but came away with a wealth of insider information, and some great stories as well.

Not particularly friendly or proactive

We had arrived from Queensland by air to spend six days in Canberra without a car.

On the morning of our second day, after we had already toured Australian Parliament House, we attended the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre to seek information about transport and attractions.

We walked quite a distance from the Novatel, finding the place with the aid of Google maps. The Canberra and Region Visitors Centre building is a modern, well appointed building in a beautiful position accessed by a walk through park land on Lake Burley Griffin, and enjoys gorgeous views across the lake.

We entered at 9:30 am, filled with expectation of learning some valuable information to enhance our visit to Canberra. We found no one at the reception desk, so we assumed opening time was later, until we came out and read the opening hours on the door, to find opening time on a week day is 9:00 am.

We then re-entered and found two ladies just arriving at the reception desk. They were chatting between themselves and not engaging with us. We approached the desk and asked for some assistance and were directed further down the building where there were two other ladies, also engaged in conversation. It took some small effort to encourage one of them to engage.

We informed the lady we were interested in information as to how to explore Canberra without a car, particularly as the hop on hop off bus had been suspended during Covid-19.

We were surprised to be informed by the staff that Australian Parliament House was closed to visitors, particularly given that we had enjoyed a great guided tour of the building and a visit to both Houses for question time the previous day.

They told us they had been told it was still closed to visitors. They did not seem to have any idea as to how to search the APH website to find the available tours so we actually gave them a short tutorial.

We did manage to obtain some Transport Canberra passes and a bus timetable from them. They would have been quite useful but for the fact the bus timetable was out of date.

Overall, we were quite underwhelmed. The substandard level of proactivity and service was in stark contrast with that we enjoyed at all the other places we visited during our six days in Canberra including Australian Parliament House, Australian Museum of Democracy, National Film and Sound Archive, Australian War Museum, High Court of Australia, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and National Museum, where everyone was extremely welcoming, informative and helpful.

Nice little area near the lake
Sep. 2020 • Family
Beautiful area near the lake. The exhibition was good too, my son enjoyed it.

The staff however do not seem very friendly. We were looking around the gift shop first and I just didn’t feel comfortable in there with all the unfriendly glare. So we moved on to the exhibition quickly. My son wanted to press the touch screen to play the audio about Canberra but the staff drove us away saying STOP! And she proceeded to play it for this other visitor. I confronted her later on about it and she apologised but by then I already lost interest and we just went back home. We were having a lovely morning playing the playground, having coffee and enjoying the view near the visitors centre. I just wish the staff were friendlier

Great place to start your sightseeing

The staff here are amazing. They helped us find presents for our children (mainly beer and wine) and then talked to us about what to see and do. They have an excellent display about how Canberra came about and to top it all off the views of the lake where fantastic
