Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Recommended for good value food & drink. Always at least 3 ales on tap. Bottles of wine also reasonably priced.
Pub let down by dark & dated interior. Would be ruined by total refurbishment but needs new furniture & lighter interior. Sports & news shown on large wall screens.

I wish this pub would be sold to someone who knows what they are doing. Has such an old charm and great space along with a beer garden in the heart of Beckenham. Instead it has a grumpy old landlord, terrible food and drink and is just generally a disappointment. Poor service and an unfriendly welcome. Please hand it over to someone who can make something of it- could be great and what Beckenham needs.

Simply put, this is a historic pub, and one that trades on that long and distinguished history. The experience struggles to match that though; I only stopped in for a few beers, and did not eat, so I will reserve judgement on that. But the beer I drank was pretty average, and not brilliantly kept. This is a disappointment as it is so easy to keep well, and has been an indicator of general standards in any establishment I have found. There was an air of slight grubbiness too. However, the locals were cheerful, it was buzzing and busy, the outdoor space is great and I would drop in for a lager rather than an ale. If I wanted a really good pint though I would keep on walking towards the Woodman.
This place could be brilliant. And I don't doubt that it will be, if someone cares enough.

The Food was excellent, fresh and crisp! Very tentative service. Quality and reasonable prices. Get in early before they sell out!

My 18 year old daughter visited this pub with her friends after finishing their A Levels, having had a meal with their teachers at a local restaurant.
My daughter had forgotten her ID so ordered a lemonade. The staff not only refused to serve her, but asked her to leave, and said if she didn't, then her group of friends would be asked to leave too.
Had my daughter not had good friends that left with her, the barman would have had no qualms about tipping an 18 year old girl out on the street at 10pm.
I have no problem that they couldn't serve her, but everything that was said, was rude and confrontational.
I have been to this pub only once before myself, and wasn't impressed, but will never go back now due to the way they treat their customers.
These short sighted bar staff need to realise that these youngsters are their customers too. This was an A Level Physics class - hardly a raucous group, but I'm sure none of them (and their parents) will be visiting this pub again.

Came here for Sunday lunch with my girlfriend.
Good things:
* None
Bad Things:
* Generally Rude and impolite service.
* They do an offer to upgrade your meal with a pint for £1. However despite them running out of the beers in this offer, they refused to offer an alternative for £1.
* Instead I asked for a Coors light as there were signs up on the wall advertising if at £2.50 a pint. However the bar staff said that the sign was 'old' and the offer no longer valid (False Advertising?).
* They had run out of Coors anyway.
* Then they got my other drinks order wrong.
* I had beef and I received 2 small, thin slices of overcooked fatty beef.
* Our parsnips didn't arrive - we mentioned this and were told that they had run out. We suggested some more beef as an alternative however the waitress said that the kitchen had now closed (at around 1:15pm on Sunday) and all they could offer were more potatoes (which were minging anyway).
The entire experience was awful. I wish I'd stayed in.

We visit monthly for a quiz night. They run nightly themed events. There is a 'pub grub' menu, and the bar area is cosy and traditional in feel. Makes a welcome change from the surrounding chain/franchise establishments.

Chose an evening to visit when there was a Quiz Night which took over the whole pub and made it impossible for us to have a conversation. The decor is nice and olde worldly with fireplaces and an outside garden but the Quiz Night put us off and we have not been back since.

Lovely cosy traditional pub - very busy when arrived so do book. Kids allowed until 7. Quick stop on way to dinner but will return.
