We hired a BBQ boat for the day to cruise along the Mary river, visit the billabong cruise areas, see some crocs & do a bit of fishing & cook a BBQ lunch with a glass of wine or 2. The river is magnificent with a variety birdlife all along the 15kms we cruised. Birds everwhere. Lots of crocs to see, different trees, pandanas & lotus flowers, plants, running alongside the river. It was a magic day even without catching any fish. If you have a day to spare & want to have a leisurely day enjoying nature at its best, then this is for you. We thoroughly recommend it.
Even better would be to hire a houseboat overnight & see a beautiful sunset.

The Mary River wetland has to be seen to be believed, and there is no better way to experience it than to slowly putter around on your own vessel, miles away from other people and as one with nature. We loved our 4 hr bbq boat cruise.

It's a really beautiful river, especially upstream and I loved the serenity, scenery, the birdlife and the crocs.

The people who run it are helpful and friendly.

However the bugs at night and the lack of comfort on the boat ruined the experience for us.

Even if you follow the bug instructions to the letter you basically have to spend 12+ hours indoors (not pleasant) to avoid them, and they sometimes still get in and it's really horrible when they do - they're everywhere.

The boat we had (not sure if they're all the same) wasn't very comfortable in terms of places to sit, didn't have enough shade and except for the upstairs deck where there's no shade, wasn't a nice place to be / spend time. They just really need a huge upgrade.

From the bedroom you have to go outside and down an outside ladder to get to the toilet at night, so keep this in mind if you're a night-time bathroom goer. The bugs are biting you every second you're outside.

I still think it's worth doing, but I would do a day trip instead. Get there super early in the morning and just hire a boat for the day, returning before bug hour.

I think it's quote expensive and not good value for the standard of boat / accommodation.

We spent 3 fabulous days on a 6 berth houseboat in the corroboree billabong and Mary River October 2020. The houseboat was spacious and comfortable with a good kitchen and fridge, great decks and good beds.

Great customer service and when we had an issue it was dealt with quickly.

Breathtaking scenery. We saw many many dozens of crocs including a feeding frenzy over over 25 crocs when a poor hapless water buffalo became their meal. An unforgettable sight!!

The boat was relatively easy to operate and the waterways while narrow in parts, easy to get through.

Highly recommend this experience. Absolutely no swimming!!!

This was a beautiful experience recommended to our family, and in turn we highly recommend! We saw beautiful birds, crocodiles (of course!) and the stunning Mary River. The houseboat itself was clean, comfortable and provided everything we needed for maximum comfort- easy to drive and well maintained even though they are a little “tired”.

We booked with Corroboree Houseboats for 2 adults, 2 nights. Paid $411 per night, plus extras. The houseboat that we were given was “Joyce”.
A beautiful few days on the Mary River, floating among lotus lilies and fishing. We thought this was going to be relaxing until we saw the decrepit houseboat that was going to be home for the next few days.
The upper deck, housed the bedroom and had a viewing deck. To access those facilities you had to cross a ripped, thread bare and torn deck carpet, which was very easy to trip over. At night time, there were no lights to show the way down narrow stairs if you need to use the toilet. To get down theses narrow metal stairs you had to walk backwards so as to hang onto the handrail...in the dark. Remembering that a slip here could result in finding yourself in croc waters.
Once on the bottom deck, the bottom section of the deck railing was noticeable loose at the gate section.
The gas bottle was located here, rusted and dated 2006.
The bathroom, housed a shower and toilet. When showering the lino floor flooded to the bathroom door, as the 2 outlets were inadequate. A purple light in bathroom was very dim. Shortage of adequate lighting on the houseboat was an issue.
Controls for the boat were located on the rear deck.To see to navigate, the cabin doors,at rear and front deck had to be opened,so as to see the waterway ahead. The steering wheel was slow, unresponsive and took far too long to respond when turned. With a headwind, the boat didn’t make progress. Just motored on the spot.
The boat even had its own Eco system, with nightly appearances of earwigs, cockroaches in the inside cabin. Obvious mouse droppings were in the crockery cupboard. We didn’t use any of the cupboards contents due to health concerns.
No spare blankets were available. The night temperatures were cold on the river and we froze with the 1 blanket that was provided.
Bird life and scenery were a pleasure. That’s as far as we would go to give any positive comments.
Avoid the houseboat “Joyce”, that lady should be retired!

Corroboree Billabong and the Mary River is a paradise for bird watchers, crocodile spotters and anyone just wanting to escape to a peaceful zone amongst the water lillies and mangroves in the Top End. We fished a little but mostly meandered the channels looking at the bird life and just chilling out with a book.
The houseboat is easy to manoeuvre and requires no license. We did not get off the boat and could not see any reason to. We anchored or drifted depending on whether we were fishing or croc or bird watching. It was easy. The fridge was big enough to not need an esky. The mosquitoes and midgies peaked at dawn and dusk and are unrelenting. You need spray, burners, to get the screens down an hour before sunset at least and stay indoors at peak times to avoid the little buggers.
Despite the missies, this is an epic trip. Sitting on the top deck leaning back and star watching each night is total serenity

We opted for quiet and relaxation by spending 5 nights in a Corroboree Houseboat. If you enjoy solitude and quiet - then this is a very good option, although we also enjoyed visiting the local Tavern for meals. The bird- and animal-life is amazing. And the temperatures are cooler than off the water. The staff took excellent care of us. I highly recommend this option.

We are from Adelaide and spent the day on a self drive houseboat it was easy to find had a safe carpark toilet block to change if you wanted there were four of us we were greeted by a friendly man who told us that there is no license required to hire or drive there is a BBQ on board with full gas bottle the boat and BBQ were beautiful clean there are chairs too sit on why cruising plenty of rooms for esky's your fishing gear etc the houseboat is covered from the weather. You receive instructions on where to go on the river there is a toilet block down the river to use should it be necessary. We fished and trolled we saw so many crocs and there was so much beautiful scenery we took so many pictures we had the best day I would do this again and would recommend this as a pleasant day's outing for anyone Think we paid about $60 each was well worth it
