Tilbury Fort is possibly the finest example of a bastioned 17th Century artillery fortress in the Britsh Isles.

Today visitors can visit the original Guardhouse, Chapel and Gatehouse buildings as well as the huge eighteenth century gunpowder magazines. You can also explore the Victorian underground magazine passages and imagine what life was like for a gunner in the late nineteenth century.

There is a free audio guide, museum, exhibition and gift shop. Hot drinks and a range of light refreshments are available in the shop. There is an indoor seating area in the old Guardhouse and picnic tables and benches outside.

I took my two grandsons here and we had great fun - just rolling down the grass banks was a delight for them. Exploring the tunnels was both scary and exciting as it was quite dark. There is nowhere to get food, ice cream and drinks from a machine are available, but it is a good place for a picnic.... More

Interesting site with a very long history. With an English Heritage membership I don't mind if an attraction can be seen in half an hour but we managed to spend around 2 and a half hours exploring on a sunny February morning. Really pleasant staff who pointed out some key things to look at. The artillery is tired and lacks... More

We went with out two children 4 and 7 and spent 5 hours there, which is amazing considering there's no playground but loads of good hills to roll down and have lots of laughs. Full of places to explore and great views. We took a picnic as there's no cafe and also not a great place for buggy's due to... More

Had a great visit to this unchanged heritage site. Really interesting and fabulous views of the River Thames Ok it is not commercialised but this is a good thing. Staff were brilliant and very well informed about the history of the site. The site is well maintained and toilets clean and tidy. A gem near London and Essex for a... More

It's not the easiest place to find being tucked away behind the "World End Pub" after driving through the dockyards of Tilbury; and if you're driving be prepared for the daily traffic jams on the Dartford crossings/M25. As for the Fort, well it was built by Henry VIII and is now in the care of English Heritage. The 2017 admission... More

Important to read all the information or you will miss some of the historic events that happened here. Might be a big hard to find on public transport. Great views and walks along the walls along the Thames. There is also a ferry across to Gravesend. English Heritage place, well worth a visit.
