About
Melba's Chocolate Factory is a 'working' tourism factory located in a heritage listed complex 40 minutes from Adelaide at Woodside in the Adelaide Hills. From 1919 the South Australian Farmers Cooperative Union made the site famous by producing cheese, butter, margarine and small goods, which were recognised worldwide. This activity ceased in 1976. From that year, the buildings lay abandoned until 1990 when the current proprietors and directors, Joy and Graeme Foristal arrived. With 1940's era chocolate and confectionery making equipment, they began their dream making old Australian favourite chocolate and confectionery. The complex developed from there and is now known as 'Heritage Park' and has become home to other cottage industries. Visitors today find the old cheese factory transformed into a large emporium styled confectionery factory shop. This is a centerpiece for 5 different rooms, where various manufacturing processes can be viewed. These are the Chocolate Room, Depositing Room, Packing Room, Panning Room and Toffee Room. Visitors are encouraged to speak to the staff who have mastered the use of the heritage equipment, making old fashioned favourites in the time honoured tradition. Old favourites such as, Inch Licorice Block, Traffic Lights and Rocky Road. To tempt chocolate lovers, there is the constant aroma of chocolate and confectionery being made.....yum! An additional interesting feature is the collection of antique and quaint memorabilia from times past, which can be found on display around the factory walls. All in all, this package makes the factory a popular family attraction as well as a significant Hill's destination for families, groups, charters and interstate, national and international visitors.

Disappointing just a glorified lolly shop. When you hear the words chocolate factory you expect to see chocolate being made, information about the process, sample tasting, history etc.. but there was none of this just over priced chocolates and lollies. We purchased $100 worth of goods and was called to the counter like a cheap takeaway store. No smile no nothing from the staff then as soon as we paid they were calling next, wanting us to quickly move along.
The outside could do with a face-lift as well just a boring brick frontage. this place could be so much more in the right hands. Wont be back sadly.

This place really is a chocoholics happy place, everywhere you look there is chocolate in all shapes and sizes. Large blocks to novelty blocks to small blocks and chocolate frogs. Friendly service and you really put on weight just walking in to the shop. Lots of off street parking and well worth the drive to get there.

It is years since we visited this place, so we are happy to visit again. Car parking is behind the factory, and access involves a short but fairly steep ramp. Entry is free. Upon entry, we find ourselves in a large rectangular shop with windows to the factory on two sides. In fact there is little workshop activity taking place – perhaps it is lunch time! The shop is displaying an immense variety of chocolate and sweet products, but we are not tempted. Perhaps this is an outing for younger people?

Have been to Melba's many times and this place never fails to please us and we never walk out empty handed. Beats to new place in Tanunda hands down !!! So much to choose from and so many samples - yum ... Overseas visitors were with us today and they loved it and also thought that it was better than Tanunda .. They also bought plenty. We will return again and again ..

It was a beautiful sunny day so we thought we would come for a drive to Melbas Chocolates . It’s not a overly huge place but all staff were very friendly and nice. There was so much chocolate available and at reasonable prices. They have a few rooms so yiu can see how things are made. Which I liked. And lots old photos and items . I would come back thank you 🙏

We expected to be in and out of here like a shot but were actually here for a while. Aside from the fact that there was way more products here than I expected, there were also multiple viewing rooms where you could see the products being made and wrapped. In addition, there was a coffee and hot chocolate bar where you could choose the milk type, chocolate type and add flavour as well, such as mint or Turkish delight. Perfect on a cold, overcast day. Aside from regular chocolate offerings, they currently have lots of easter related products plus other items such as nougat and other sweets if you’re not a chocolate lover. I was drawn in by the different flavoured chocolate frogs, banana, strawberry and mint amongst others. Lots of products and bags of mixed products in all different sizes and price ranges. Truly something for everyone.

Think of a chocolate or sweet and it will be here. So very many to choose from, from small sizes to bulk packets. There is a ‘seconds’ table where there are great bargains. Ice cream too. We didn’t get to see any chocolate being processed but it was still a great morning. Toilets and some seating are provided also.

Real olde worlde type place, set in beautiful mountain area, an old cheese factory that houses amazing chocolate and sweet treats.
THE best hot chocolate, little areas where you can see the chocolate being made or packaged - expansive range of chocolate and chocolate related treats of all sizes.
Mainly indoor but does have a little outside area to sit and enjoy the treats.
Really friendly staff and worth a visit 💙

This is a wonderful tourist attraction that is easily accessible, is open 7 days a week, and is a real step back in time to how things used to be made. The first thing that strikes you as you walk into the factory are the wonderful aromas... mmm... takes me back to my childhood, and getting bags of mixed lollies from the corner shop, only much much better!!!
As you wander through each of the production rooms, you take the self-guided tour by pressing a button to hear audio about the history of that particular room, the machinery, and the techniques they use. Very interesting indeed.
Then once you have walked around the production areas, the entire mid-section of the factory is full of wonderful chocolates, lollies and touristy Australiana to purchase.
We also like the addition of icecream cones, which is great on a hot summers day.
My family and I love to pick out our bags of goodies, and then share with each other in the car on the way home.
It's well worth a trip to Woodside, and our kids often ask us when we will be going back again!!
