About
Oysters have been farmed in Ballinakill Bay, Connemara since 1893. Visitors see how oysters grow from seed to plate and learn about the fascinating history of the farm. A demonstration of the techniques and practices of oyster farming explains how oysters like wine take their taste from the bay they are grown. Visitors are invited to participate in grading, weighing, shucking and tasting the unique flavour of a Connemara Oyster grown in Ballinakill Bay on the Wild Atlantic Way. You can book on a scheduled public tour or a private experience. We are a working farm and offer an authentic hands on experience, in a unique environment. All our guides work on the farm and we are now open for daily tours and tastings

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Paul gave us an in depth account of growing oysters and the dedication of the lads in managing the beds to produce the wonderful oysters. It was excellent. The best part was the sampling of the fruit of their labour - the best we've ever tasted.
Highly recommend you include this on your plans in Connemara.

Very instructive visit, David made the explanations very clear and interesting.
Learnt a lot about the Irish oysters industry and oyster in general.
The oyster tasting is probably the best advertisement for the quality of product. Hard to resist buying a few dozens after that.

This was a complete surprise visit that we booked for by a chance meeting and it turned out to be one of the best diversions ever taken. We both adore oysters and I was actually surprised at my ignorance of oyster farming. Really lives up to its own description. It is without doubt a risky and labour intensive business, We shall never look or taste another oyster again as before our tour!

...or even if you have, this is a worthwhile experience. David gives a deep insight into oyster farming at the very modest "factory" from where he is gradually rebuilding a business into over 100 hectares of historic oyster cultivation. Book ahead and try to time your visit to coincide with a low spring tide or there's not much you will actually see of the oyster beds - or nets-on-trestles as they are in practice.

We enjoyed a hugely interesting tour of the Connemara Oyster Farm this week. Situated in the stunning scenery of Connemara we were treated to an educational and entertaining insight in to the world of an oyster and oyster farm. Thanks to David who looked after us all very well.

So nice to see someone who loves what he does and explains everything so well. Paul was just that! In spite of the weather, we got to really understand the art of farming oysters, not to mention their briny wonderfulness when we tasted them. Wonderful experience.

Just finished up our tour with Paul and had an amazing time learning about the history of the farm, how they ensure that the oysters are the best possible quality, and the process that is needed to grow the perfect oyster. Paul was super friendly and informative, he shucked our first couple oysters and then taught us how to shuck our own. Super high quality and we enjoyed them so much that we went straight to Veldeshons Seafarer restaurant to eat a dozen more. Highly recommend this experience!

This is located in a secluded area of Connemara. The tour took one hour and the guide was very knowledgeable. We also got oysters at the end of the tour to taste. All in all, an enjoyable experience.
