About
“By creating the only winery in Mauritius dedicated to the production of lychee wine, I wanted to write the art of winemaking differently:with a lot of audacity, some technical know-how and a great amount of fun. Some say we have stars in our eyes, some say we are extravagants. What is certain is that we are somewhere West of the Sun and East of the Moon." Alexander Oxenham, Oenologist Takamaka Boutique Winery proposes guided tours of its winery including a unique lychee wine tasting experience. Meet and Greet the Oenologist or his spouse for a human touch you will remember. Advance booking advised. Shop and Coffee corner available on site. Come for a relaxing time. Picnic lunch packs available at the Coffee Corner. Come, Experience, Enjoy.

- Grant LDurban, South Africa45 contributionsInteresting afternoonLovely surprise. Very knowledgeable staff gave a very informative overview of the process of making wine from litchi. Could sit and watch the process through a glass window while tasting. We did not eat - but it is a lovely location - really nice story and great feel to the location. We enjoyed and took a few bottles with us back home.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 January 2024
- ValentinaSh10 contributionsDelicious Lycee WineWe stumbled across this little winery on a day trip from our hotel. The winery offers meals and wine tasting. We enjoyed the wine tasting, which was presented by a lovely lady who was very well informed of the products and processing. We were absolutely surprised and delighted with our find. Please take the opportunity to taste these award winning lycee wines and support the local economy. We bought several bottles of wine, dessert wine, and their jams and vinegar. We were lucky to find some of the wine at our hotel and enjoyed the wine throughout our stay.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 15 February 2024

- Markybug73Perth, United Kingdom234 contributionsNice little local boutique wineryThis is a great little spot we visited via TUI with our guide Karen. You get a little video to watch explain the history and description of the process then on to the wine tasting. Afterwards a chance to sample some fruit jams and honey, then off to the gift shop ! We stopped here as part of a multi stop TUI tour. I would happily recommend this venue.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 May 2024

Omg...This place is just amazing! The wine is amazingly delicious and the food is tasty and well made. The staff was really nice and welcoming. We were so happy to have found this gem (which our taxi driver never even heard of!). Lychee wine is now my favourite type of wine thanks to this place. The only regret I have is buying too few bottles to bring back home. Hope to see you again!

What a pleasure visiting again.
The staff are delightful and the litchi wines are surprisingly drinkable. Who knew one could make wine from litchis?
We will definitely come back for a leisurely lunch and tasting. 10/10

Superb visit and explanations on the history of the cellar and the making of lychee wine. Followed by a tasting. At the top, frankly, this wine is magical. A small shop to bring back a little taste souvenir for the holidays. Very welcoming and warm staff

This visit was a money con and has to be avoided. They charge over 300 for a guided visit lasting ten minutes . You can’t access the room and you certainly see no demonstration. You only see a small video. I have visited many wine places and this was never like this. Anyway the business has been running one year only and they produce just over 100.000 bottles a year. It has not yet proved itself. The gentleman/ guide was polite but wine is obviously not his business and he can only tell you what he had to learn by heart. The owners were nowhere to be seen.
Also, the wine tasting was made in the very same glass ( sometimes with some of the other wine left at the bottom) and the young gentleman had to be pointed that one of them was corked. I was not drinking myself but was told that I had to be charged the same price. I noticed that they charge 155 for children over 5 and quite frankly this should be free .
I feel that the owners have found a way to generate income there as the business itself is so small. I was not on a tour with the tour operators but I know that many qualify this of ‘ unmissable’ which leads me to believe they haven’t been on the visit itself. Please do not waste your money by going there .

Dear Françoise,
Since our opening in Nov of 2017, we have had nothing but glowing reviews from over 10,000 guests from the world over. So imagine my surprise when I came across your negative review.
Because I am genuinely concerned over your bad experience, allow me to address the points you have raised:
- The guided tour is Rs 315 per adult (about EUR 8) which includes the visit of the winery, a video and the tasting of four wines. Children pay Rs 155 (about EUR 4) which includes the visit and a glass of fruit juice. I believe these are very reasonable prices based on the going rate of wine tours. During the tour, the guide explains the story behind the winery, the family
history, then takes you through the gangway from where you see all the stainless-steel tanks, after which he plays a video which is about 7 min long. Finally, the guide showcases the ageing cellar. As you can see, this could not possibly be done in under 10 minutes.
- The access to the cellar is restricted, for obvious securitiy reasons. Moreover, we have never advertized "demonstrations" to the public. Since you are familiar with the wine
industry, you would know that wine is made only during the harvest season (around a month long).
- Our production is about 15,000 bottles/year (although 100,000 bottles is a fantastic goal). This is to say, we are a very small artisanal winery.
- Our wines are unique (l'm the only Enologist in the world making exclusively lychee wine). Widely acclaimed chefs such as Michel Sarran, Thierry Drapeau, Didier Corlou or Pierre Hermes can vouch for me. You may also enquire about me at hotels in Mauritius such as Le Royal Palm, Le Prince Maurice and many others that employ sommeliers.
- Regarding our young guide, Jonas, he has been employed only for a few months, and surely, he will develop more confidence with time. Please also bear in mind, that there is no wine culture in Mauritius as it is the case in Europe. Therefore, the world of wine is fairly new to Jonas who is a gentle, charming young man, and I'm very glad to have him on board. I'll encourage him the best I can on his journey through the world of wine.
- I do my best to conduct the tasting with my guests. Many reviewers here can confirm this. But sometimes I may have meetings outside the winery, which was the case the day you came.
- We do the tasting in the same glass as it's done in 90% of the wineries worldwide. But it is a fact that Jonas should have changed the glass if the wine was "corked" (this is also the very first time that we're having a "corked" wine).
Far from being a scam, this is a project driven by a passionate and committed team devoted to our craft.
We are new, we are small, and surely there are many things that we can improve, so please support us with your patience and feedback.
If you were to return, I can personally guarantee you the experience you were promised and would be delighted to invite you to the winery for lunch.
Best regards,
Alexander

The owner knows more about wine that anyone I have met on many winery tours around the globe.
5 star service, very affordable prices, new wine flavours you will never forget. Definitely will re - visit when back.
