Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Went to Agua Azul on a combined trip with Misol-Ha and the Palenque ruins from Palenque. It wasn’t a sunny day but the water was still fairly blue and nice. We found a lovely swimming hole near the main lookout point. Cross the bridge to the main lookout then walk a little upstream. There was a man renting life jackets by two waterfalls. Much nicer than the official main swimming area a little further up. One piece of advice is to watch out for the vendors... obviously can’t speak for all of them but the one we went to tried to charge us 70pesos for a soda we got with our dinner (40 pesos for 5 empanadas). Sodas are normally 20-25 peso elsewhere in Mexico. After questioning her in Spanish, she dropped the price to 35 peso... ok fine, gave her the correct amount. She demanded 15 more pesos. We counted the money in front of her and still she said we need to give her 15 more pesos (we weren’t gonna tip her after her first attempt). I think once she realised we could speak Spanish and understood what she was saying (I think she was hoping we would get flustered and confused and just give her what she was asking for) she said Ok, Ok and walked off. Just check the menu for prices before you agree to anything!!

We arranged a day trip to Zona Arqueologica de Palenque and Casacadas de Agua Azul via our hotel for 750 pesos each from Palenque. (for two people)

We were picked up by a minibus at 09:00 AM from out hotel and had around 2 and half hours at the ruins. It then took about an hour or so to reach Cascadas de Agua Azul from the ruins. Unfortunately Cascadas de Misol-Ha was closed (we think there was filming there for a movie), so our trip did not include a stop there. As a result, we had a lot of time at Agua Azul.

It had been raining, so the water was more brown, but it is still very impressive.

If you work your way up the rapids, you can find points for photos and where you can swim. There are "life guards" (locals in life jackets) who can show you safe spaces to swim in around the rapids. We found a point where you could bathe near the rapids and lie on a rock under one of the rapids, so it was like a power shower. Other travellers found flatter areas where you could run along the rapids etc., so definitely explore further up.

Definitely recommend as part of a day trip from Palenque. (We think it is possible to visit as part of a transfer from San Cristóbal de las Casas also, weather permitting.)

Not so blue when we were there. Heavy rain had flushed top soil down the waterfalls to make the water a muddy brown. However, our guide showed us a photo of the blue water further upstream as it entered a muddy stream. Extensive waterfalls and well worth the visit.

I visited back in late October on a cloudy day that would later bear heavy rainfall. I believe the water would only appear blue when there is sun and the sky is clearer. Otherwise you'll see what I saw: brown water. SO, I suggest visiting this place when the sky is blue and not covered by clouds.

You drive down through the Chiapas highlands past coffee and banana plantations in particular into jungle areas. The waterfalls dont look that impessive until you follow the trail higher and higher ( quite hard work ). There are local people selling food, drinks and sovenirs all along the route so be prepared. Bathing area at top of trail but not really worth the effort of getting there since changing facilities are further down the mountain

The waterfalls are very beautiful, but to get there is horrible. They will stop you on the highway with a rope over the road and will persist you to by something before they let you go (essentially they will take you hostage until you buy some chips). This will happen several times. You will have to pay for every step you set. They also have no problem with dogs starving to death next to there shops. Go to the smaller waterfalls, just as pretty and a lot less hostile.

The Falls are still amazingly beautiful, but a lot has changed over the years. Agua Azul along with Palenque were my 2 favorite spots to visit in Mexico. After several drownings, Agua Azul no longer allows unlimited access and swimming in and around the falls. It sucks, but all the swimming is at the bottom and top of the main area now.

Not as wild and incredible as it once was, but I guess it is safer. Much more tame so to the least.

What a great place to be close to nature. Sure, it's touristic but it hasn't lost it's touch of magic. Las cascadas son increíbles! You can also meet locals who o for a swim. I went up all the way to see all the different swimming spots and it was great. There are streams that can take you away and pools in which you can relax. It's an adventure. If you love water, this is a must.

HOwever, there is a wealthy Mexican family that bought the property across from the falls. they came to our group and wanted money. We said no. They hung around for a while then left. One of the local river guides said he would take them down the river.

This is the second time than I come here and I have never seen the real bleu water. Nevertheless is really beautiful. The sound of the water is very relaxing. Take a break and rest one night here.
