The Canning River Regional Park (CRRP) is the largest of eight regional parks in the Perth Metro Area. Anyone living South of the Swan River will be familiar with the Canning River. The CRRP runs 6 km (4 miles) from Nicholson Rd and Leach Highway, a major traffic artery. The Canning River is a major tributary of the Swan River, which runs through the City of Perth.

This was my first visit to Canning River Regional Park although I’ve been wanting to get here for a while. I was pleasantly surprised. There’s some great walking tracks in the park, very well sign posted with suggested loops, and the birdlife was worth stopping to admire.
It’s not close to Perth city so I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to get here, however it’s good if you’re in the area. I plan on heading back out again and spending a few hours there to explore more.

Longneck turtles everywhere! I’ve seen at least ten.
The conservation team are doing a great job.
Most suburbs have those signs with silhouettes of rare local wildlife just to boast. Not Wilson! We have the goods! Western Longneck Turtles abound!
Don’t pat them or they will bite you, although to be fair it is worth it.

The park is the largest of eight regional parks within the Perth metropolitan areas in swan Australia . Covering around 6 km of canning river ending at Shelley bridge.

Quite a few walking trails, we parked at the Kent street car park, got takeaway coffees and went for a very nice quite a long walk around the river.

Every year we either go down to the river in manning or watch from home, the New Year’s Day fireworks. Held by the residents that live along the beautiful Canning River. Free event and quite good and family friendly. Go early for a good parking spot.

Appropriate venue for work lunch meetings, they make good coffee. Situated at a nice park where you can take a good walk adds to the versatility of the venue. They had baskets of blankets there which is a good option for winter.

WILDLIFE AROUND THE CANNING RIVER
The Canning River regional park covers a vast area of wetlands that are home to numerous birds, reptiles and wildflowers. You can regularly see black swans, Australian pelicans, iris and different species of duck around the Kent Street weir bridge and in the nearby creeks. There are parrots and honey eaters in the trees, and lizards and snakes on the ground. You might even see a long neck turtle in the creek.
*NB* Many of the snakes found in Australia are highly venomous and can kill people. The two most commonly seen snakes around the Canning River are tiger snakes and dugites.
*** Tiger snakes are black on the back and have red, orange or yellow stripes on the side of the body.
*** Dugites are brown or olive green on the back.
Black on the back, it's a tiger. Brown or green is a dugite.
Both snakes are venomous but dugites are a shy retiring snake and will try to avoid people. Tiger snakes will normally try to avoid people but some of them are grumpy and will rear up and strike at you, like a cobra does.
If you see a snake, back away from it and walk around it. DO NOT TRY TO PICK IT UP, and don't throw things at it. Just leave it alone and walk around it. If you walk on the paths, you probably won't see any snakes.
*** IF YOU GET BITTEN BY A SNAKE: ***
Apply a pressure bandage to the bitten area.
Immobilise the area with a splint or sling.
Get the patient to sit down and relax.
Call 000 and ask for an ambulance, or carry the patient to a car and transport them to the nearest hospital.
The venom from Australian snakes spreads rapidly if you move about and can kill an adult human in as little as 10 minutes. Applying a pressure bandage and getting the patient to stay still and remain calm, will significantly slow the spread of the venom and give you time to get them to hospital, where they can get treatment.
The same treatment applies to a dog that is bitten by a snake. Apply a pressure bandage, and carry them to the car and take them to a vet immediately. Obviously don't put a pressure bandage on their nose if they get bitten there, but do use a pressure bandage on their limbs or body.

WILD FLOWERS
The best time to see the wildflowers around the Canning River regional park, or anywhere in Perth or the southwest of Western Australia, is winter and spring. There are Eucalypts, Acacias, Banksias, Grevillias, bottlebrush, native orchids, and kangaroo paws (plants) in the area.
Most of these plants flower in late winter, spring and early summer (July to December).

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT
If you want to see great sunsets, autumn and spring are the best time for sunsets in Perth. And during March & April, you can see some spectacular sunsets with pink, orange and blue skies.
Autumn and spring also have the nicest weather with warm days and cool nights.
If you come here in summer you can expect daytime temperatures up to 40C+, and hot north or easterly winds. These winds are often accompanied by dust and we regularly have hot dry dust storms during summer.

PATHS & GRASSED AREAS
There are dual use paths and you can walk or cycle all over the area. Some of the paths are in need of small repairs but most are in good condition. I used to cycle around these paths every day and never got flat tyres, which is unlike most towns outside of Perth where you get double gee prickles (Caltrops) popping your tyres every hundred meters.
There are some lovely lawns that are well maintained and you can sit down and have a picnic by the river or just relax under a tree.
Avoid areas of dead grass because these have been sprayed with herbicide (Glyphosate), which the Canning council seems to enjoy using. They spray the stuff every month when the engineering crews are mowing lawns. The herbicide Glyphosate, leaves a carcinogenic residue behind for at least 6 months after it has been sprayed so avoid any area of dead grass or sand that is near green well maintained grass.
There are a number of shelters around the park. Most have benches and a table and a few have BBQ facilities near them. There are rubbish bins nearby too.
There is a lack of drinking fountains in the area. There are a couple but there needs to be more.

DOG EXERCISE AREAS
A lot of areas in the City of Canning, and around the Canning River regional park, have dog exercise areas. Dogs must be under the control of their owners in these areas but are allowed to run off lead and chase a ball or whatever. There are signs on these dog exercise areas indicating you can let your dog off lead to run around, as long as it does not run off and cause problems to other people or animals in the area.
Be wary of strange dogs in these areas, especially if they are not with a human handler. I have been attacked by dogs over 50 times (between 2000 & 2011) while moving around the area.
If you do take your dog to the park, the council has provided doggy doo bags by their bins and it is appreciated if you clean up after your dog.

LOCAL SHOPPING
There are lots of shops located along Albany Hwy, near the Kent Street weir, as well as Carousel shopping centre if you dare. I don't recommend Carousel shopping centre unless you are desperate to see what Western Australia's largest shopping centre has become. If you do go there, try to walk so you don't have to deal with the traffic. If you park at the Kent Street weir, it is a 10-15 minute walk to Carousel shopping centre.
Make sure you remove all valuables from your vehicle and leave nothing in the vehicle to attract the attention of thieves. There are a lot of opportunistic crooks in the area that will smash your car's window and steal anything of value in it.

WRAPPING UP
All in all, the Canning River regional park is quite a nice place to go for a walk, ride or picnic. You can take your dog or children (whichever you prefer) and spend a relaxing few hours or longer, looking at the flowers and birds, or sitting by the river watching the sun set while enjoying a cold drink.
Avoid the dead grass, don't leave valuables in your car, and if you see council workers spraying anything, leave the area immediately. Try to visit in spring or autumn for the best weather and sunsets, and come down and check out the area. It really has some nice things to see.

The Kent Street Weir, which is the main feature of the Canning River Regional Park, is well-known to generations of South of the River teens. It's an easy bicycle ride from South Perth or Victoria Park. The Kent St Weir divides the Canning River into esturine and riverine water. In the last 50 years, the park has been upgraded but Kent St Weir still holdfs a special place in the heart of many South of the River locals. The Kent St Weir is a sort of dam that stops the salty water moving upstream.
