Took us approximately an hour and a half drive through the beautiful rolling hills to arrive at Sungai Selangor Dam. It was completed in 2002 and located along the trunk road to Bukit Fraser from Kuala Kubu Bharu town.

Not really difficult to miss as you will see a number of cars at the road side taking beautiful photos. However, if you do decide to stop by the Splash Information Center, it’s open Tuesdays through Sundays 9am till 4pm with free entry. In the event you do visit, (which we didn’t) don’t forget to take some time to admire the lovely views of the majestic lake especially where the spillway controls the water level within the dam.

If you are into photography like we are, it is a nice stop over especially with the selection of the mountains in the lake.

About an hour+ drive from KL, my trip was purely to check out the night sky. We decided to go to only two locations being our first time there.

The first an adjacent car park area next to the dam with a beautiful mountain backdrop. Its spooky/lonely/secluded. Fortunately there were 2 other cars with enthusiasts who brought foldable chairs/table with music so we had company and somewhat felt safer.

Another lookout point is on the bridge few minutes drive further down which has the view of the dam. Bring a red torch to maintain low visible lights as there will be night sky photographers at this spot. There were also people fishing, some laying/sleeping on the road while waiting for their catch.

We arrived at 3am specifically on a new moon for a dark moonless sky but then lots of clouds appeared of and on. It got windy too.

My Canon G7 which usually picks up the amazing Milky Way Centre what the naked eye only sees as clouds of dust was unable to detect it at all. That was a bummer.

Nevertheless considering the fact that we saw that many stars just an hour+ drive from the heavily light polluted KL, Kuala Kubu was awesome!

Do check out the weather conditions/moon phase to enjoy the darkest sky to contrast the beautiful balls of gas!

The view is nothing special and there are many overgrown and poorly maintained plants blocking the view. There is nothing to do and the area is not even suitable for a picnic.

This reservoir is located short distance after passing through Kuala Kubu Baharu and immediately before starting the climb up to Fraser's Hill. It is a large reservoir with a few well maintained roadside parking areas with great views over the reservoir and of the surrounding mountains and jungle. Well worth a stop for a few pics and rest before the steep and windy road up to Fraser's Hill.

Immediately after passing the reservoir is the Chiling Natural Reserve. There is a great walk / hike up the Sungai Chiling River to a large waterfall. Over the years we have visited this place many times, although it has become seriously popular of late.
