Come here if you’re in the area. Assume you’re not meant to enter as the gates are locked, but there’s a pile of stones against a wall by the gates making it easy to get over. The views are great and the town is just fascinating!

Staying in the nearby village in private home accommodation, the "new" town was home for a week while attending a training course. The town was moved after an earthquake destroyed the "old" town last century. A brisk walk up the hill to the old town, and you are in a time warp, with partially collapsed buildings, narrow laneways and relics of bygone era all around. Beware! Some buildings are under threat of collapse, with high unsupported walls precariously standing many floors above the ground. The local people are working hard to keep some tourism in the town, with the local restaurant and the local bar showing kind hospitality and a good work ethic, with good products and good service.…

I did all kinds of research about Poggioreale before our trip and there just was no info so here it is - yes it is technically closed but there is a pile of rocks right next to the entrance so you can hop over extremely easily. Also these is a family of dogs that come in and out which means there’s also a hole in the fence somewhere near the entrance too. All that to say- this place is amazing and haunting. There were a few others there at first when we got there but otherwise we had the place to ourselves. An eerie bit of history and a very worthwhile experience. The roads driving up there have tons of rubble and they are tiny so be careful with that but I say definitely go if you’re into creepy stuff like I am. …

We took a detour between Trapani and Agrigento to stop here. Gates are locked, but there's a path to the right. We had a brief wander, but didn't want to intrude on locals up the road. Buildings are crumbling, so enter at your own risk if not with a guide. Opportunity for some fantastic photos. Local stray dogs are very friendly!…
