The Colour or Ghana
Oct. 2017 • Family
We’ve been living in Ghana for 7 months and one of the key areas I’ve always endeavored to see is the Kente village! If you intend to visit the village over a weekend be mindful of the fact that most of the village people attend funerals on Saturdays and Sundays or take the weekend off. Don’t take the road to Adawonamase - even though it’s a scenic road as per the video attached, there are no signs to indicate that you are arriving at a Kente village. You will see a few houses where people weave but best is to continue to Bonwire/Bonwei and then you have to ask where the weaving is done. You will arrive at a small Centre where a master weaver takes you through the experience of weaving and explain the various types. This is insightful and one of the better experiences in Ghana so far. Be prepared to haggle but be fair. More can be done to promote the community and the little shops selling Kente. Definitely worth visiting!

Real Kente. Real Ghana.

We see kente cloth in America all the time so it is a real treat getting to see first hand where and how it's made. You can even try making it yourself. The weavers work hard and want to sell their wares so be prepared for some aggressive haggling. Otherwise, it's a great place to visit to experience the real culture of Ghana!

Nothing beats Authenticity

What strikes you most is the warmth of the people and their eagerness to show off their rich history of weaving. A bit of a hike to get there, but worth the trip. Be sure to walk around the village and see more than just one weaving site.
I would recommend this trip to get another glimpse of what Ghana has to offer.

Kente, Cocoa and more

This wonderful village was a real surprise. Hands on learning experience with terrific tour guides. You get a chance to do hands on weaving and to walk through a cocoa grove. There is also a chance to learn about the famous soap as well. Fun and educational. Wonderful shop if you want to purchase Kente Cloth where you can learn all of the meanings and even design your own fabric. A must see and do place to visit.
