The sight of the Caribou on top of its rocky outcrop strikes you immediately you step into the area of this memorial park. The terrain around carries strong echoes still of all that happened here one hundred years ago yet the whole landscape exudes a sense of tranquility and order. The Veteran Affairs of Canada organisation does a great job... More

An ideal location to fully understand what went on during the Battle of The Somme. This is a must visit if you are on a Battlefields Tour

The words on the memorial stone at the entrance to the Memorial Park say it all. "Tread softly here ! Go reverently and slow ! Yea, let your soul go down upon its knees, And with bowed head, and heart abased, strive hard To grasp the future gain in this sore loss ! For not one foot of this dank... More

We visited on the 1st January 2017, there was snow on the ground and a thick frost on the trees. It was just stunning! I am truly glad to have visited the memorial and humbled to see the trenches of WW1. Must see if you are in the area

On a very cold, windy day, a visit to this well-preserved historic site really drives home the ghastly nature of trench warfare during the First World War. The situation becomes more horribly real if you imagine all the trees and grass gone and the ground all churned up by artillery action. The soldiers of the Dominion of Newfoundland crossed the... The visitor centre tells the story of these brave Newfoundland men,it was good to learn about them, especially as we had lived in Labrador years ago and visited Newfoundland. So sad

Newfoundland Memorial Park was such an incredible experience for me and my friends when we went there. The sun was shining clearly and it was a lovely day, so it was hard to imagine this once being the front line of one of the most terrible battles in the whole of WWI and indeed the world's history. The trenchlines are... More

Having read and heard a lot about the Beaumont-Hamel battle site (we have friends in Newfoundland) we have wanted to visit for a long time. This was the site of the battle on the 1st day of the Somme - 1 July 1916 where at 0845, 800 members of the Newfoundland Regiment (later Royal Newfoundland Regiment) went 'over the top'... More

The Newfoundlanders site is very impressive and well preserved. Reading about the First World War does not prepare you for the actual geography of these battles. The lines between the Germans and the Newfoundlanders were so close. So many of Newfoundland's young men lost in such a small space. The preserved trenches and remnants of barbed wire make you realise... More
