To flee !!
You arrive in this village after an hour's mountain drive to visit the Notre Dame des Fontaines Chapel.
You must go to the office to access it.
And there…. You have the most beautiful specimen of the welcome at the bottom of the valley…. You are in the anti-tourist tourist office.
The person explains to you that it is open BUT
you must call in advance to make an “appointment”
There is only one visit per day (!!)
It’s at 2 p.m. and there… it’s 4:30 p.m.
Delirium.

And when you explain to him that you read on the internet that it is open, he replies, after your hour of mountain driving, via Italy because the road is closed, that you have to read the notes at the bottom of the pages.
Moreover, faced with your astonishment, he explains to you that you are not the first to make the same remark.
Beautiful tourist experience in a valley where one of the jewels is unfortunately kept under lock and key and inaccessible.
Please, Mr. Mayor, do something because no one will consume or visit your beautiful village. I don't know how to be more welcoming.

THANKS !!

It's absolutely amazing a 15th century comic book intended to teach the gospel. We strongly recommend taking this tour with a Guide named Cyril Darius.
He knows this chapel perfectly, it is funny and exciting. Maybe the tourist office can tell you something!

The owner of Hotel Fleur des Alpes recommended we walk to Notre Dame des Fontaines and it was a great recommendation. The church is amazing inside and the walk was beautiful.

Ok, if you are not into extraordinarily wonderful fifteenth century religious frescoes in beautiful remote alpine valleys then maybe it's not worth you making a special trip. But if you are anywhere nearby and can open yourself to the experience then find a way to get there.

Bring a torch if you can, as this building can be dark and the colour and detail are worth exploring.

Above all, learn the story of the death of Jesus and let yourself revel in this amazing fifteenth century graphic novel, full of feeling, passion, (and one or two chuckles too). Immerse yourself in the paintings then scramble down to the springs below .

The word remarkable is overused. This place really is. Late medieval/early modern age frescoes (the work by Canavesio in particular is exquisite ) in a quiet unprepossesing setting. The ability to view a pictorial representation of how artists represented and people viewed the Christian faith in the 15th century is quite humbling.
It is a long journey from the Coast along narrow roads at the end but for the sake of your spirit do it if you can.
Nature’s setting around the place is also awesome.
The nearby Town of La Brigue is pretty and its Church (St Martin -complete with paintings by Louis Brea)is also worth a visit.

Just a few kilometres from the quaint town of La Brigue is the little chapel Notre Dame des Fontaines. Although the frescoes by Giovanni Canavesio were painted in the 15thC, the church itself dates back to the 12thC and oral history would suggest that the amazing springs that are the raison d'etre for this chapel, made this a sacred place for people long before Christianity had ever been thoght of.
Certainly, this is mystical place and the wonderful frescoes are testament to that. But it's also worth taking the time to explore the springs and the stream that emerges rom th rocks next to the church.
You can take photos inside the church but flashlight is rightly prohibited, so take a good camera, preferrably with a monopod, as the dimly lit chapel requires 1/15 or 1/8 second exposures. iPhones won't do.

This is yodelling territory with churches ,town squares, ruins and absolute mountain magic. High rocky cliffs tower majestically over the village, some snow capped. Where is Julie Andrews, when you need her? The style of architecture is baroque , medieval and has retained its exceptional artistic heritage. If you visit mid afternoon, you will be treated to an amazing sight of a large herd of sheep coming from the slopes through the town, with bells a jangling.
Visit St Martins Collegiate Church, built in the Romano-Lombard style dating back to the 13th century. It has a striking striped front with a doorway dating from 1501 and aside door from 1234. A short walk will reveal the octagonal Chapelle Saint Michel and Chapelle de Annonciation, with its Renaissance facade and a campanile bell tower. On a hillock above the village, with some walls remaining lies the ruins of of the 14th century Chateau...This area was part of Italy until 1947.
The town is very interesting as you explore the colourful buildings, ancient churches, arcades, vaulted passages and streets. Take special note of the dates above the lintels,as they will remind you how old this gem of a town is. The buildings are made of natural stone with many renovated with pastel facades and green doorways and steps
There are 4 eateries/cafes.. Ask for a"tanifoulousa'- a pie made of potatoes, ewe's cheese and honey. Its the perfect accompaniment while enjoying the charms of La brigue
Tip....take the Nice - Cuneo train..hop-on hop-off ,or drive to Roya valley and take the dead end road.

The Notre Dame de Fontaines is place that needs to be visited! Located close to La Brigue and from the coast of the Meditaranien a sturdy ride but absolute worthwhile. Amazing paintings from the 15th century preserved in an amazing way and still fully original.

Unusual 15th century frescoes of the life of Christ and of the Judgment make this small chapel in the woods a fascinating stop, and a beautiful and calm respite. Books on the art and the the church's history are available. Check hours for visits online or at the town information center at La Brigue.
