This day tour from Chania to the Samaria Gorge was impressive again, after my first visit of the gorge three years ago. Walking along the gorge you have to be in a good physical condition, because descending the 20 km is hard on the knees. The views are amazing, the terrains rough and covered with stones. In short, very impressive... More

Got there by boat and once arrived, we were very excited about the long walk to the gorge. We did not want to start from the entrance so we got to the exit and walked up to the gorge, which was quite the opposite but somehow rather adventurous. I heard that you could ride a horse while exploring the national... More

Bring lots of water, wear a bathing suit, and bring a change of shoes. You will feel like you are walking forever, but the scenery changes on the way down so much into the gorge that you will amazed with each mile. Pack a lunch and wear good hiking boots!

This is a beautiful canyon. We just took the fairy over from Sfakia ti Aghios Roumeli and hiked half way up and back. We set a very fast pace (almost jogging) to make it up to the abandoned village in the middle. Keep in mind the trail is often pretty busy and it is mostly single track so passing other... More

Have been here for a secound time in the beginning of September. Arrived with a first bus from Chania (from Chania bus station 06:15). There were a lot of people but it is possible to go some sections without meating any. It is a long hike descending so be prepared for sore legs on the next day. In Crete there... More

We did the full hike down, but did not realize you need to take a ferry back and then a bus back to the original parking lot we parked at. It got expensive. The hike was beautiful and would do it next time on a tour that has the bus back to the hotel pre arranged.

Completed the Samaria gorge on a beautiful October day and I have to say it doesn't disappoint. Stunning views at every turn and a thoroughly enjoyable walk. It's 16km long (including the 2km once you exit the gorge and head for the ferry). It's mostly downhill for the first 3-4km which is hard on the knees and I would suggest... More

We walked the gorge 23 years ago and when we planned this trip I knew I had to do it again. Originally we just did it all ourselves, taking a local bus to the head of the gorge and organising our own way back on the boat and bus. This time, in late October, we went with an organised bus... More

A friend and I staying in Kalyves wanted to visit Samaria Gorge. We were put in touch with Penelope at Kalyves Beach Hotel who booked us through IOtours. We were picked up at 5.45am in Kalyves, taken by shuttle to board a bigger bus where we were introduced to our escort/mountain guide, Marco. From there we were driven to the... More
