Test the biggest boat lift in the world! Open to the navigation in 2002, the Strepy-Thieu boat lift is an EXTRAordinary heritage! Its exceptional dimensions and its unique technical performance raise it as the biggest boat lift that ever exists. Rather see: 117 meter high, 130 meter long and 75 meter wide. Alone, it can overcome a difference in level of 73.15 meter. It takes your breath away! Come to discover the know-how of the Belgian civil Engineering of the 20th and 21st centuries! Cross the lift! Take a ride with the Strepy-Thieu funicular lift by boat! An unforgettable moment... Also to do: The audiovisual experience "Spirits of Belgium" Take in the major moments of Belgian inventiveness. In addition watch a film showing the construction and the working of this outstanding work of art! Do not miss the wonderful view on the region and the machine room from the cafeteria on the 8th floor.

While visiting the South-Belgium countryside, we have been admiring this exceptional lift system for waterway barges. Indeed this is a unique industrial engineering achievement. We spent half an hour spotting barges going up and down and became canal enthusiasts! The visitor centre is proposing a...More

I have been to this place many times by car and also along the long and winding cycle paths that follow the seemingly never ending canal. On a warm sunny day it is great, just to watch the lift operating and lifting / lowering the...More

Firstly, be warned that out of season (end of September) there are only 2 boat trips a day, 10am and 2pm. We arrived at 10,30 so had a long wait and although there is a bar, serving a small selection of snacks, there are only...More

This is real industrial heritage still working. You get a splendid tour and explanations (in French and a little bit Dutch) by the civil servants (fonctionaires) operating the old machines. And all this for free. You can also visit the new lift and pay for...More

You could indeed be sitting outside and enjoy the impressive construction, and the way big boats are been moved up and down. But paying the fee and visiting inside is also worthwhile. Not for the spectacle tour (which felt to be mandatory for school excursions),...More
